Abstract
Dissolving microneedle (DMN) has been researched as a drug delivery technology that improves drug molecule transportation through the skin with little discomfort. However, the sluggish drug absorption, poor skin dissolution, and lengthy time lags of DMN have limited its potential uses. The aim of this study was to design a novel DMN system for the administration of the poorly water-soluble drug, estradiol (E2), with fast skin penetration and a stable release rate for a long time. DMN containing E2 emulsion (E2-EM-DMN) and traditional DMN (T-DMN) were prepared. Rat skin was used for penetration test and guinea pig skin was used for skin irritation experiment. The drug release profiles and stability properties of these two kinds of DMNs were also investigated. High performance liquid chromatography was employed to determine the E2 content in DMN. The E2 concentration in rat plasma was achieved by a newly developed liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method that was fast, reproducible, and specific. The height of E2-EM-DMN and T-DMN was 600 μm. The drug loading of the E2-EM-DMN and T-DMN was 667.30 ± 7.21 μg/patch and 672.56 ± 6.98 μg/patch. E2-EM-DMN possessed enough mechanical strength to penetrate the skin and caused no irritation to the skin. E2-EM-DMN could release the drug more rapidly and more continuously than T-DMN. E2-EM-DMN had good pharmaceutical stability. In summary, the E2-EM-DMN showed reliable quality and superior release performance. Emulsion-embedded DMN is an ideal transdermal delivery system for drugs.

Abstract
Hydrogels are one of the emerging classes of materials in current research. Besides their numerous applications in the medical sector as a drug delivery system or in tissue replacement, they are also suitable as irrigation components or as immobilization matrices in catalysis. For optimal application of these compounds, knowledge of the swelling properties and the diffusion mechanisms occurring in the gels is mandatory. This study is focused on hydrogels synthesized by radical polymerization of imidazolium-based ionic liquids. Both the swelling and diffusion behavior of these hydrogels were investigated via gravimetric swelling as well as sorption experiments implemented in water, ethanol, n-heptane, and tetrahydrofuran. In water and ethanol, strong swelling was observed while the transport mechanism deviated from Fickian-type behavior. By varying the counterion and the chain length of the cation, their influences on the processes were observed. The calculation of the diffusion coefficients delivered values in the range of 10−10 to 10−12 m2 s−1. The gravimetric results were supported by apparent diffusion coefficients measured through diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. A visualization of the water diffusion front within the hydrogel should help to further elucidate the diffusion processes in the imidazolium-based hydrogels.

Abstract
This paper discusses the structure morphology and the thermal and swelling behavior of physically crosslinked hydrogels, obtained from applying four successive freezing-thawing cycles to poly (vinyl alcohol) blended with various amounts of κ-carrageenan. The addition of carrageenan in a weight ratio of 0.5 determines a twofold increase in the swelling degree and the early diffusion coefficients of the hydrogels when immersed in distilled water, due to a decrease in the crystallinity of the polymer matrix. The diffusion of water into the polymer matrix could be considered as a relaxation-controlled transport (anomalous diffusion). The presence of the sulfate groups determines an increased affinity of the hydrogels towards crystal violet cationic dye. A maximum physisorption capacity of up to 121.4 mg/g for this dye was attained at equilibrium.

Abstract
A thixotropic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel, containing a hydrophilic poly-vinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) core, was obtained in order to develop a preformed 3D network able to maintain injectability. PVA was mixed with PVP in two different molar ratios (1:1 and 1:3) and chemically cross-linked using trisodium trimetaphosphate (STMP), which is able to react only with PVA component. A combination of Time of Flight- Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), elemental analysis and UV spectroscopy permitted to determine both the cross-linking arm length and the crosslinking degree. Hydrogels were characterized in terms of swelling pressurization, rheological and mechanical behaviour. In particular, the viscoelastic behaviour of the hydrogel was analysed in shear and compression stress under dynamic conditions and compared with the performance of healthy human nucleus pulposus. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that the scaffold obtained mixing PVA and PVP in a molar ratio 1:1 can be considered a promising material to be utilised in the replacement of nucleus pulposus.

Abstract
Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) has attracted considerable research interest and is recognized among the largest volume of synthetic polymers that have been produced worldwide for almost one century. This is due to its exceptional properties which dictated its extensive use in a wide variety of applications, especially in medical and pharmaceutical fields. However, studies revealed that PVA-based biomaterials present some limitations that can restrict their use or performances. To overcome these limitations, various methods have been reported, among which blending with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) showed promising results. Thus, our aim was to offer a systematic overview on the current state concerning the preparation, properties and various applications of biomaterials based on synergistic effect of mixtures between PVA and PVP. Future trends towards where the biomaterials research is headed were discussed, showing the promising opportunities that PVA and PVP can offer.

Abstract
3D hydrogel scaffolds are widely used in cellular microcultures and tissue engineering. Using direct ink writing, microperiodic poly(2-hydroxyethyl-methacrylate) (pHEMA) scaffolds are created that are then printed, cured, and modified by absorbing 30 kDa protein poly-l-lysine (PLL) to render them biocompliant in model NIH/3T3 fibroblast and MC3T3-E1 preosteoblast cell cultures. Spatial light interference microscopy (SLIM) live cell imaging studies are carried out to quantify cellular motilities for each cell type, substrate, and surface treatment of interest. 3D scaffold mechanics is investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM), while their absorption kinetics are determined by confocal fluorescence microscopy (CFM) for a series of hydrated hydrogel films prepared from prepolymers with different homopolymer-to-monomer (Mr ) ratios. The observations reveal that the inks with higher Mr values yield relatively more open-mesh gels due to a lower degree of entanglement. The biocompatibility of printed hydrogel scaffolds can be controlled by both PLL content and hydrogel mesh properties.

Abstract
A novel approach based on a combination of a pulse RH controlling system and a rapid scan vacuum FTIR spectrometer (PRHCS-RSVFTIR) was utilized to investigate dynamic hygroscopicity of two atmospheric aerosols: ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). In this approach, rapid-scan infrared spectra of water vapor and aerosols were obtained to determine relative humidity (RH) in sample cell and hygroscopic property of aerosols with a subsecond time resolution. Heterogeneous nucleation rates of (NH4)2SO4 were, for the first time, measured under low RH conditions (<35% RH). In addition, studies of MgSO4 aerosols revealed that water mass transport may be limited by different processes depending on RH values (surface limited at 40% < RH < 52% and bulk phase limited at RH < 40%). Furthermore, we are also the first to report water diffusion constants in micron size MgSO4 aerosols at very low RH values. Our results have shown that the PRHCS-RSVFTIR is well-suited for determination of hygroscopicity of atmospheric aerosols and water transport and nucleation kinetics of liquid aerosols.

Abstract
The diffusion of water into dentin adhesive polymers and leaching of unpolymerized monomer from the adhesive are linked to their mechanical softening and hydrolytic degradation. Therefore, diffusion coefficient data are critical for the mechanical design of these polymeric adhesives. In this study, diffusion coefficients of water and leachables were obtained for sixteen methacrylate-based crosslinked polymers using absorption experiments. The experimental mass change data was interpreted using numerical solution of the two-dimensional diffusion equations. The calculated diffusion coefficients varied from 1.05 × 10(-8) cm(2)/sec (co-monomer TMTMA) to 3.15 × 10(-8) cm(2)/sec (co-monomer T4EGDMA). Correlation of the diffusion coefficients with crosslink density and hydrophilicity showed an inverse trend (R(2) = 0.41). The correlation of diffusion coefficient with crosslink density and hydrophilicity are closer for molecules differing by simple repeat units (R(2) = 0.95). These differences in the trends reveal mechanisms of interaction of the diffusing water with the polymer structure.
