Recent Advances in Smart Hydrogels Prepared by Ionizing Radiation Technology for Biomedical Applications

Materials with excellent biocompatibility and targeting can be widely used in the biomedical field. Hydrogels are an excellent biomedical material, which are similar to living tissue and cannot affect the metabolic process of living organisms. Moreover, the three-dimensional network structure of hydrogel is conducive to the storage and slow release of drugs. Compared to the traditional hydrogel preparation technologies, ionizing radiation technology has high efficiency, is green, and has environmental protection. This technology can easily adjust mechanical properties, swelling, and so on. This review provides a classification of hydrogels and different preparation methods and highlights the advantages of ionizing radiation technology in smart hydrogels used for biomedical applications.

Design and fabrication of conductive nanofibrous scaffolds for neural tissue engineering: Process modeling via response surface methodology

Peripheral nervous system in contrary to central one has the potential for regeneration, but its regrowth requires proper environmental conditions and supporting growth factors. The aim of this study is to design and fabricate a conductive polyaniline/graphene nanoparticles incorporated gelatin nanofibrous scaffolds suitable for peripheral nervous system regeneration. The scaffolds were fabricated with electrospinning and the fabrication process was designed with Design-Expert software via response surface methodology. The effect of process parameters including applied voltage (kV), syringe pump flow rate (cm³/h), and PAG concentration (wt%), on the scaffold conductivity, nanofibers diameter, and cell viability were investigated. The obtained results showed that the scaffold conductivity and cell viability are affected by polyaniline/graphene concentration while nanofiber diameter is more affected by the applied voltage and syringe pump flow rate. Optimum scaffold with maximum conductivity (0.031 ± 0.0013 S/cm) and cell compatibility and suitable diameter were electrospun according to the software introduced values for the process parameters (voltage of 13 kV, flow rate of 0.1 cm³/h, and PAG wt.% of 1.3) and its morphology, cell compatibility, and biodegradability were further investigated, which showed its potential for applying in peripheral nervous system injury regeneration.

Hydrogels 2.0: improved properties with nanomaterial composites for biomedical applications

The incorporation of nanomaterials in hydrogels (hydrated networks of crosslinked polymers) has emerged as a useful method for generating biomaterials with tailored functionality. With the available engineering approaches it is becoming much easier to fabricate nanocomposite hydrogels that display improved performance across an array of electrical, mechanical, and biological properties. In this review, we discuss the fundamental aspects of these materials as well as recent developments that have enabled their application. Specifically, we highlight synthesis and fabrication, and the choice of nanomaterials for multifunctionality as ways to overcome current material property limitations. In addition, we review the use of nanocomposite hydrogels within the framework of biomedical and pharmaceutical disciplines.
