Abstract
Agar, a naturally occurring polysaccharide, has been modified by grafting it with acrylic (AcA) and methacrylic (McA) acid monomers, resulting in acrylic or methacrylic acid grafted polymer (AA-g-AcA or AA-g-McA) with pH-sensitive swelling behavior. Different ratios between agar, monomers, and initiator were applied. The synthesized grades of both new polymer series were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, NMR, TGA, DSC, and XRD to ascertain the intended grafting. The percentage of grafting (% G), grafting efficiency (% GE), and % conversion (% C) were calculated, and models with optimal characteristics were further characterized. The swelling behavior of the newly synthesized polymers was studied over time and in solutions with different pH. These polymers were subsequently crosslinked with varying amounts of glutaraldehyde to obtain 5-fluorouracil-loaded nanogels. The optimal ratios of polymer, drug, and crosslinker resulted in nearly 80% loading efficiency. The performed physicochemical characterization (TEM and DLS) showed spherical nanogels with nanometer sizes (105.7-250 nm), negative zeta potentials, and narrow size distributions. According to FTIR analysis, 5-fluorouracil was physically incorporated. The swelling and release behavior of the prepared nanogels was pH-sensitive, favoring the delivery of the chemotherapeutic to tumor cells. The biocompatibility of the proposed nanocarrier was proven using an in vitro hemolysis assay.

Abstract
Functional polymeric biomaterials (FPBMs) with bioactive characteristics obtained by radiation-induced graft copolymerisation (RIGC) have been subjected to intensive research and developed into many commercial products. Various studies have reported the development of a variety of radiation-grafted FPBMs. However, no reports dealing with the quantitative evaluations of these studies from a global bibliographic perspective have been published. Such bibliographic analysis can provide information to overcome the limitations of the databases and identify the main research trends, together with challenges and future directions. This review aims to provide an unprecedented bibliometric analysis of the published literature on the use of RIGC for the preparation of FPBMs and their applications in medical, biomedical, biotechnological, and health care fields. A total of 235 publications obtained from the Web of Science (WoS) in the period of 1985-2021 were retrieved, screened, and evaluated. The records were used to manifest the contributions to each field and underline not only the top authors, journals, citations, years of publication, and countries but also to highlight the core research topics and the hubs for research excellence on these materials. The obtained data overviews are likely to provide guides to early-career scientists and their research institutions and promote the development of new, timely needed radiation-grafted FPBMs, in addition to extending their applications.

Abstract
Hydrogels are three-dimensional soft polymeric materials that can entrap huge amounts of water. They are widely attractive in the biomedicine area because of their outstanding applications such as biosensors, drug delivery vectors, or matrices for cell scaffolds. Generally, the low mechanical strength and fragile structure of the hydrogels limit their feasibility, but this is not the case. In this work, acrylic acid-agar hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties were synthesized using gamma radiation as a crosslinking promoter. The obtained hydrogels exhibited a water absorption capacity up to 6000% in weight without breaking and keeping their shape; additionally, they showed a noticeable adhesion to the skin. The synthesized materials were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and mechanical testing. Additionally, their water uptake capacity and critical pH were studied. Net(Agar/AAc) hydrogel exhibited a noticeable capacity to load silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), which endowed it with antimicrobial activity that was demonstrated when challenged against Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) on in vitro conditions.

Binary Graft of Poly( N-vinylcaprolactam) and Poly(acrylic acid) onto Chitosan Hydrogels Using Ionizing Radiation for the Retention and Controlled Release of Therapeutic Compounds. Polymers (Basel) 2021; 13:polym13162641. Abstract
In this study, we carried out the synthesis of a thermo- and pH-sensitive binary graft, based on N-vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) and pH sensitive acrylic acid (AAc) monomers, onto chitosan gels (net-CS) by ionizing radiation. Pre-oxidative irradiation and direct methods were examined, and materials obtained were characterized by FTIR-ATR, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and swelling tests (equilibrium swelling time, critical pH, and temperature). The best synthesis radiation method was the direct method, which resulted in the maximum grafting percentages (~40%) at low doses (10–12 kGy). The main goal of this study was the comparison of the swelling behavior and physicochemical properties of net-CS with those of the binary system (net-CS)-g-NVCL/AAc with the optimum grafting percentage (~30%). This produced a material that showed an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of 33.5 °C and a critical pH value of 3.8, indicating the system is more hydrophilic at higher temperatures and low pH values. Load and release studies were carried out using diclofenac. The grafted system (32%) was able to load 19.3 mg g−1 of diclofenac and release about 95% within 200 min, in comparison to net-CS, which only released 80% during the same period. When the grafted system was protonated before diclofenac loading, it loaded 27.6 mg g−1. However, the drug was strongly retained in the material by electrostatic interactions and only released about 20%.

Abstract
New medical devices with anti-inflammatory properties are critical to prevent inflammatory processes and infections in medical/surgical procedures. In this work, we present a novel functionalization of silicone for medical use with a polymeric prodrug and a thermosensitive polymer, by graft polymerization (gamma rays), for the localized release of salicylic acid, an analgesic, and anti-inflammatory drug. Silicone rubber (SR) films were functionalized in two stages using graft polymerization from ionizing radiation (60Co). The first stage was grafting poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL), a thermo-sensitive polymer, onto SR to obtain SR-g-PNVCL. In the second stage, poly(2-methacryloyloxy-benzoic acid) (P2MBA), a polymeric prodrug, was grafted to obtain (SR-g-PNVCL)-g-P2MBA. The degree of functionalization depended on the concentrations of monomers and the irradiation dose. The films were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM–EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and contact angle. An upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of the films was demonstrated by the swelling degree as a temperature function. (SR-g-PNVCL)-g-P2MBA films demonstrated hydrolysis-mediated drug release from the polymeric prodrug, pH, and temperature sensitivity. GC–MS confirmed the presence of the drug (salicylic acid), after polymer hydrolysis. The concentration of the drug in the release media was quantified by HPLC. Cytocompatibility and thermo-/pH sensitivity of functionalized medical silicone were demonstrated in cancer and non-cancer cells.

Abstract
The reinforcement of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) grafted styrene butadiene rubber (SBR-g-D4) with in situ generated silica was performed using the sol–gel reaction of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in latex. The characterization of SBR-g-D4 and in situ generated silica reinforced SBR-g-D4 was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy. The grafting efficiency of the styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) was determined by a gravimetric method. It was found that the constant silicon content and the grafting efficiency of SBR were 1.72% and 0.13 wt% when the weight ratio of D4 to SBR was 0.20. The effects of the D4 and in situ generated silica content on the curing characteristics, mechanical properties and morphology of SBR latex were investigated. The mechanical properties of in situ generated silica reinforced SBR-g-D4 vulcanizates were improved significantly compared to raw SBR vulcanizate when the in situ generated silica content was 18.05%. Compared with silica reinforced SBR-g-D4, the tensile strength, wet skid resistance and rolling resistance of the in situ generated silica reinforced SBR-g-D4 were better. This is because of the higher crosslinking degree in the SBR-g-D4 matrix and the strong chemical bond between SBR-g-D4 molecular chains and in situ generated silica. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed good silica filler dispersion in all the reinforced SBR-g-D4 vulcanizates. The reinforcement of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4) grafted styrene butadiene rubber (SBR-g-D4) with in situ generated silica was performed using the sol–gel reaction of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in latex.![]()

Abstract
Previous studies involving poly N-vinylcaprolactam (PNVCL) and itaconic acid (IA) have synthesised the hydrogels with the presence of a solvent and a crosslinker, producing chemically crosslinked hydrogel systems. In this study, however, temperature sensitive PNVCL was physically crosslinked with a pH-sensitive comonomer IA through ultraviolet (UV) free-radical polymerization, without the presence of a solvent, to produce hydrogels with dual sensitivity. The attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy indicated successful polymerisation of the hydrogels. The temperature and pH sensitivity of the hydrogels was investigated. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the gels was determined using the UV spectrometry and it was found that the incorporation of IA decreased the LCST. Rheology was conducted to investigate the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of the hydrogels, with results indicating IA that enhances the mechanical properties of the gels. Swelling studies were carried out at ~20 °C and 37 °C in different buffer solutions simulating the gastrointestinal tract (pH 2.2 and pH 6.8). In acidic conditions, the gels showed gradual increase in swelling while remaining structurally intact. While in basic conditions, the gels had a burst in swelling and began to gradually degrade after 30 min. Results were similar for drug release studies. Acetaminophen was incorporated into the hydrogels. Drug dissolution studies were carried out at 37 °C in pH 2.2 and pH 6.8. It was found that <20% of acetaminophen was released from the gels in pH 2.2, whereas the maximum drug released at pH 6.8 was 74%. Cytotoxicity studies also demonstrated the hydrogels to be highly biocompatible. These results indicate that physically crosslinked P(NVCL-IA) gels possess dual pH and temperature sensitive properties, which may be beneficial for biomedical applications such as drug delivery.

Abstract
Poly (N-vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL) is a polymer which offers superior characteristics for various potential medical device applications. In particular it offers unique thermoresponsive capabilities, which fulfils the material technology constraints required in targeted drug delivery applications. PNVCL phase transitions can be tailored in order to suit the requirements of current and next generation devices, by modifying the contents with regard to the material composition and aqueous polymer concentration. In this study, physically crosslinked Poly (N-vinylcaprolactam)-Vinyl acetate (PNVCL-VAc) copolymers were prepared by photopolymerisation. The structure of the polymers was established by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography. The polymers were further characterised using differential scanning calorimetry and swelling studies. Determination of the LCST of the polymers in aqueous solution was achieved by employing four techniques; cloud point, UV-spectrometry, differential scanning calorimetry and rheometry. Sol-gel transition was established using tube inversion method and rheological analysis. This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of PNVCL with the addition of VAc, and to establish the effects on the phase transition. The PNVCL based polymers exhibited a decrease in the LCST as the composition of VAc increased. Sol-gel transition could be controlled by altering the monomeric feed ratio and polymer concentration in aqueous milieu. Importantly all copolymers (10wt% in solution) underwent gelation between 33.6 and 35.9°C, and based on this and the other materials properties recorded in this study, these novel copolymers have potential for use as injectable in situ forming drug delivery systems for targeted drug delivery.

Abstract
A one-step method was implemented to graft N-vinylcaprolactam (NVCL) and 4-vinylpyridine (4VP) onto silicone rubber (SR) films using gamma radiation in order to endow the silicone surface with temperature- and pH-responsiveness, and give it the ability to host and release diclofenac in a controlled manner and thus prevent bacterial adhesion. The effects of radiation conditions (e.g., dose and monomers concentration) on the grafting percentage were evaluated, and the modified films were characterized by means of FTIR-ATR, Raman spectroscopy, calorimetry techniques (DSC and TGA) and contact angle measurements. The films responsiveness to stimuli was evaluated by recording the swelling degree of pristine and modified SR in buffer solutions (critical pH point) and as a function of changes in temperature (Upper Critical Solution Temperature, UCST). The graft copolymers of SR-g-(NVCL-co-4VP) showed good cytocompatibility against fibroblast cells for prolonged times, could host diclofenac and release it in a sustained manner for up to 24 h, and exhibited bacteriostatic activity when challenged against Escherichia coli.

Abstract
Polypropylene films were grafted with thermo-responsive N-vinylcaprolactam and pH-responsive N-vinylimidazole polymers by means of gamma radiation using pre-irradiation and direct methods, in order to functionalize the films with thermo- and/or pH-responsiveness. The dependence of grafting yield on parameters such as co-monomer concentration, pre-irradiation dose, temperature, and reaction time was evaluated. The samples were characterized by Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, swelling studies in different solvents, and water contact angle. The grafted copolymers presented thermo- and pH-sensitiveness, highlighting their potential as advanced biomaterials, capable of providing adequate environment for hosting and sustained release of antimicrobial drugs bearing cationic moieties, such as groups of diclofenac, while still exhibiting good cytocompatibility.

Abstract
Hemocompatibility and oxidative stress are significant for blood-contacting devices. In this study, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and N-(3-aminopropyl)methacrylamide hydrochloride (APMA) were cografted on polypropylene (PP) membrane using ultraviolet grafting to load antioxidative d-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS) and control the release of TPGS. The immobilization of NIPAAm and APMA onto PP membrane was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Combined with data from platelet adhesion, red blood cell (RBC) attachment, and hemolysis rate, the hemocompatibility of PP was significantly improved. An in-depth characterization using hemolysis rate test, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy was conducted to confirm that the mechanism of the release of TPGS interacted with RBCs was different at different stages. The release of TPGS from the loading PP membranes affected hemolysis at different stages. At the early stage of release, TPGS maintained the tiny (nanometer-sized) tubers on the membrane surface and enhanced the membrane permeabilization by generating nanosized pores on the cell membranes. Afterward, the incorporated TPGS slowed the lipid peroxidation of erythrocytes and filled in the lipid bilayer of erythrocyte to prevent hemolysis. Thus, the approach implemented to graft NIPAAm and APMA and load TPGS was suitable to develop medical device with excellent hemocompatibility and antioxidative property.
