Ion exchange selectivity and structural changes in highly aluminous zeolites

Regulation of the Si/Al ratios and Al distributions of zeolites and their impact on properties

Zeolites are typically a class of crystalline microporous aluminosilicates that are constructed by SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedra. Because of their unique porous structures, strong Brönsted acidity, molecular-level shape selectivity, exchangeable cations, and high thermal/hydrothermal stability, zeolites are widely used as catalysts, adsorbents, and ion-exchangers in industry. The activity, selectivity, and stability/durability of zeolites in applications are closely related to their Si/Al ratios and Al distributions in the framework. In this review, we discussed the basic principles and the state-of-the-art methodologies for regulating the Si/Al ratios and Al distributions of zeolites, including seed-assisted recipe modification, interzeolite transformation, fluoride media, and usage of organic structure-directing agents (OSDAs), etc. The conventional and newly developed characterization methods for determining the Si/Al ratios and Al distributions were summarized, which include X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF), solid state 29Si/27Al magic-angle-spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (29Si/27Al MAS NMR), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), etc. The impact of Si/Al ratios and Al distributions on the catalysis, adsorption/separation, and ion-exchange performance of zeolites were subsequently demonstrated. Finally, we presented a perspective on the precise control of the Si/Al ratios and Al distributions of zeolites and the corresponding challenges.

Transmetalation in a Ce(III)-phosphoester Crystalline Coordination Polymer with an Exceptionally High Selectivity for Yb(III) and Lu(III)

A novel crystalline coordination polymer containing Ce³⁺ and bis(4-nitrophenyl) phosphate (L), CeL₃ , was synthesized and its unique transmetalation selectivities toward Yb³⁺ and Lu³⁺ in the lanthanide series were evaluated. The relatively large difference in transmetalation selectivity between the neighboring Tm³⁺ and Yb³⁺ species is noteworthy because the reactivities of heavy lanthanides are generally considerably similar. The structural strain of the polymeric framework is likely responsible for this unusual trend. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that, in the cases of only Yb³⁺ and Lu³⁺ , large differences in their ionic sizes compared to that of Ce³⁺ in the parent framework may induce a structural strain after solid solution formation, while cleavage of the relatively weak Ce-O bond allows the formation of new Yb-O and Lu-O bonds with the incoming Yb³⁺ and Lu³⁺ , respectively. Structural phase transitions likely caused by the heterogeneous nucleation of the Yb- (or Lu-) type phase were also observed.

Monitoring by in situ neutron diffraction of simultaneous dehydration and Ni2+ mobility in partially exchanged NaY zeolites

The incoherent signal in neutron diffraction patterns allows correlating in real time hydration–dehydration levels and structural changes in zeolites.
