Precious Metal Recovery from Wastewater Using Bio-Based Techniques

The recovery of metals from waste material has been on the increase in the past few years due to a number of reasons such as supporting the diversification of metal supply resources. In addition, the alternative use of the waste material for metal recovery can add to the main production line, boosting production throughput and profitability thus, allowing companies to sustain their activities during times of low commodity prices. While there has been a lot of research and interest in the recovery of precious metals such as platinum group metals (PGMs), Au, and Ag from solid waste material, there has been limited focus on the recovery of these value metals from wastewater. This is mostly related to challenges associated with finding cost-effective technologies that can recover these metals from solutions of low metal concentrations. In recent years, bio-based technologies have, however, become established as potential alternatives to traditional techniques in the treatment of wastewater due to their ability to recover metals from solutions of low concentrations. While wastewater might be characterized by some significant value metal content, it also contains other components that have potential economic value if recovered or converted to by-products. Such an approach may not only provide an opportunity for extraction of metal resources from wastewater but also contributes toward the circular economy. This chapter presents insights into precious metal recovery from wastewater using bio-based technologies, compares such an approach to the traditional techniques, explores the recovery of other value-added products and finally considers some of the challenges associated with the large-scale application of the bio-based technologies.

Kinetic and Thermodynamic Studies of Precious Metals Sorption on Impregnated Lewatit VP OC 1026 from Chloride Solutions

Precious metals are used in many branches of industries. Due to their rarity and diminishing natural resources, more and more new methods are being sought to recover them from secondary sources, which can be electronic waste or spent car exhaust converters. This paper presents the research on the recovery of precious metals from chloride solutions using the Aliquat 336-impregnated Lewatit VP OC 1026 sorbent. The study used a warm impregnation method without toxic solvents, which is beneficial for the environment. The maximal sorption capacities obtained for model solutions in 0.1 M HCl were: 95.6 mg/g for gold, 38.2 mg/g for palladium, and 36.2 mg/g for platinum. There were studied: kinetics and thermodynamics of sorption, as well as amounts of the sorbent, effects of phase contact time and HCl concentration on the sorption of precious metals. Positive values of enthalpy change ΔH° validate that the process is endothermic. The research was also carried out on a real leaching solution obtained by digesting a spent catalytic converter, containing small amounts of platinum group metals. Desorption of precious metal ions was conducted using 1 M thiourea in 1 M hydrochloric acid. The obtained impregnated sorbent proved to be effective for sorption of Au(III), Pd(II), Pt(IV) ions.

A New Impregnated Adsorbent for Noble Metal Ion Sorption

Noble metals (NM) such as gold, platinum, palladium, and rhodium are widely applied in the electronics and automotive industries. Thus, the search for cheap and selective sorbents for noble metals is economically justified. Nitrolite does not sorb noble metal ions. A new impregnated sorbent was prepared. The natural sorbent Nitrolite was impregnated with Aliquat 336 using a new warm impregnation method. After the impregnation process, Nitrolite adsorbed platinum(IV), palladium(II), and gold(III) ions from the chloride solutions. The values of the sorption capacity for palladium(II) and platinum(IV) ions were 47.63 mg/g and 51.39 mg/g, respectively, from the 0.1 M HCl model solution. The sorption capacity for gold(III) ions was estimated to be 73.43 mg/g from the 0.1 M HCl model solution. An exhausted catalytic converter was leached, and platinum(IV), palladium(II), and rhodium(III) were transferred to the chloride solution. The impregnated sorbent Nitrolite-Aliquat 336 was used in the investigations of the platinum(IV), palladium(II), and rhodium(III) ions' sorption from a real solution. The impregnated sorbent Nitrolite-Aliquat 336 proved to be suitable for the recovery of platinum(IV) and palladium(II) ions, whereas rhodium ions were not sorbed from the leached solutions. Notably, 1 M thiourea in the 1 M HCl solution desorbed platinum(IV), palladium(II), and gold(III) above 94%.

Ce(III) and La(III) ions adsorption using Amberlite XAD-7 resin impregnated with DEHPA extractant: response surface methodology, isotherm and kinetic study

In this paper, the removal efficiency of Cerium (Ce(ΙΙΙ)) and lanthanum (La(ΙΙΙ)) ions from aqueous solution using Amberlite XAD-7 resin impregnated with DEHPA(XAD7-DEHPA) was studied in the batch system. The adsorbent ( XAD7-DEHPA) was characterized by SEM-EDX, FTIR and BET analysis Techniques. The response surface methodology based on the central composite design was applied to model and optimize the removal process and evaluate operating parameters like adsorbent dose (0.05-0.065), initial pH (2-6) and temperature (15-55). Variance analysis showed that the adsorbent dose, pH and temperature were the most effective parameters in the adsorption of Ce(ΙIΙ)and La(IΙI) respectively. The results showed that the optimum adsorption condition was achieved at pH = 6, the optimum amount of absorbent and the equilibrium time equal to 0.6 gr and 180 min, respectively. According to the results, the adsorption percentage of Ce(ΙIΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions onto the aforementioned resin were 99.99% and 78.76% respectively. Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and sips isotherm models were applied to describe the equilibrium data. From the results, Langmuir isotherm (R² (Ce) = 0.999, R² (La) = 0.998) was found to better correlate the experimental rate data. The maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent ( XAD7-DEHPA) for both Ce(IΙI) and La(III) was found to be 8.28 and 5.52 mg g^-1 respectively. The kinetic data were fitted to pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and Intra particle diffusion models. Based on the results, the pseudo-first-order model and Intra particle diffusion model described the experimental data as well. In general, the results showed that ( XAD7-DEHPA) resin is an effective adsorbent for the removal of Ce(IΙI) and La(III) ions from aqueous solutions due to its high ability to selectively remove these metals as well as its reusability.

Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions adsorption through Amberlite XAD-7 resin impregnated via CYANEX-272 extractant

The goal of this paper is to investigate the ability of Amberlite XAD-7 (AXAD-7) resin impregnated with CYANEX-272 (di-2,4,4-trimethylpentyl phosphonic acid) to remove cerium (Ce(ΙΙΙ)) and lanthanum (La(ΙΙΙ)) ions from aqueous solutions in the batch scheme. The prepared adsorbent material was determined utilizing FTIR, SEM-EDX, and BET methods. The impact of three individual process variable factors involving feed solution pH (2-6), adsorbent dose (0.05-0.65), and process temperature (15-55 °C) on the simultaneous removal of Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions was evaluated via response surface methodology (RSM) according to the central composite design (CCD). The modeling of Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions adsorption was performed using the quadratic model and was evaluated using a coefficient of determination for both ions. The optimization data revealed that the adsorption amount of Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions removal under optimal conditions were 99.75% and 69.98%, respectively. Equilibrium and kinetic investigations were also conducted to define the removal performance of the calculated adsorbent for Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions removal. Various isotherms models such as Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, and Sips were examined at 25 °C to analyze the equilibrium isotherm data. The data revealed that the Sips approach is compatible with the experimental data. The highest adsorption capacity of the resin for Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions were 11.873 mg g^-1 and 7.324 mg g^-1, correspondingly. The kinetic study of the Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) adsorption process was conducted via pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models(IDMs). Based on the data obtained, kinetic data were fitted well to a pseudo-second-order rate correlation. According to the obtained results, the (AXAD-7) resin impregnated with CYANEX-272 performed well in removing both Ce(ΙΙΙ) and La(ΙΙΙ) ions from aqueous solutions with well stability during several adsorption-desorption cycles and well regeneration and excellent metallic ions recovery.

Surface Modification of Biomass with Di-(2-Ethylhexyl)phosphoric Acid and Its Use for Vanadium Adsorption

The method of carbonizing biomass using di-(2-Ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and tributyl phosphate impregnation (SICB) was studied in this research. SICB combines the benefits of an extractant and an ion exchange resin. The adsorption and desorption properties of vanadium were investigated, and the adsorption mechanism was analyzed. The results showed that the carrier was first prepared at a temperature of 1073.15 K using sawdust as a biomass substitute and then cooled to room temperature. The best adsorption performance was obtained by impregnating the carriers with di-(2-Ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and tributyl phosphate for 60 min. The vanadium adsorption rate of 98.12% was achieved using the biomass at an initial V(IV) solution concentration of 1.1 g/L, a pH value of 1.6, and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:20 g·mL for 24 h. Using 25 wt.% sulfuric acid solution as desorbent, the desorption rate of vanadium was as high as 98.36%. The analysis showed that the adsorption of vanadium by SICB was chemisorption, and the adsorption process was more consistent with the proposed second-order kinetic equation. Therefore, SICB has high selectivity and high saturation capacity because of the mesopores and micropores produced by carbonization.

Symmetry between Structure–Antibacterial Effect of Polymers Functionalized with Phosphonium Salts

In actual context, when the terms of biomass and bioenergy are extensively used, it becomes clear that the comparative study of some biopolymers, such as cellulose and chitosan, can offer a large usage range, based on the scientific progress obtained in the biomaterials field. Starting from the structural similarity of these two polymers, we synthesized composite materials by grafting on their surface biocide substances (phosphonium salts). After testing the biocidal effect, we can conclude that the antibacterial effect depends on the ratio of support to phosphonium salt, influenced by the interaction between the cationic component of the biocides and by the anionic component of the bacterial cellular membrane. It was also observed that for the materials obtained by cellulose functionalization with tri-n-butyl-hexadecyl phosphonium bromide, the bacterial effect on E. coli strain was much better when chitosan was used as the support material.

Critical review of functionalized silica sorbent strategies for selective extraction of rare earth elements from acid mine drainage

The ubiquitous and growing global reliance on rare earth elements (REEs) for modern technology and the need for reliable domestic sources underscore the rising trend in REE-related research. Adsorption-based methods for REE recovery from liquid waste sources are well-positioned to compete with those of solvent extraction, both because of their expected lower negative environmental impact and simpler process operations. Functionalized silica represents a rising category of low cost and stable sorbents for heavy metal and REE recovery. These materials have collectively achieved high capacity and/or high selective removal of REEs from ideal solutions and synthetic or real coal wastewater and other leachate sources. These sorbents are competitive with conventional materials, such as ion exchange resins, activated carbon; and novel polymeric materials like ion-imprinted particles and metal organic frameworks (MOFs). This critical review first presents a data mining analysis for rare earth element recovery publications indexed in Web of science, highlighting changes in REE recovery research foci and confirming the sharply growing interest in functionalized silica sorbents. A detailed examination of sorbent formulation and operation strategies to selectively separate heavy (HREE), middle (MREE), and light (LREE) REEs from the aqueous sources is presented. Selectivity values for sorbents were largely calculated from available figure data and gauged the success of the associated strategies, primarily: (1) silane-grafted ligands, (2) impregnated ligands, and (3) bottom-up ligand/silica hybrids. These were often accompanied by successful co-strategies, especially bite angle control, site saturation, and selective REE elution. Recognizing the need to remove competing fouling metals to achieve purified REE "baskets," we highlight techniques for eliminating these species from acid mine drainage (AMD) and suggest a novel adsorption-based process for purified REE extraction that could be adapted to different water systems.

Solvent-Impregnated Resins Based on the Mixture of (2-Diphenylphosphoryl)-4-ethylphenoxy)methyl) diphenylphosphine Oxide and Ionic Liquid for Nd(III) Recovery from Nitric Acid Media

Novel solvent-impregnated resins (SIRs) were prepared by treatment of styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer (LPS-500) with mixtures of the promising polydentante extractant (2-diphenylphosphoryl)-4-ethylphenoxy)methyl)diphenylphosphine oxide (L) and an ionic liquid [C4mim]+[Tf2N]-for the extraction chromatography recovery of Nd(III) from nitric acid solutions. It was shown that introduction of the ionic liquid into the SIR composition results in considerable enhancement of the Nd(III) recovery efficiency compared with resin impregnated only by L in slightly acidic media. The influence of the L: ionic liquid molar ratio in the SIRs composition, their percentages, concentration of metal and HNO3 in the eluent, and acid type on the value of synergistic effect and adsorption efficiency of Nd(III) recovery was studied. The SIR containing 40% of mixture of L and [C4mim]+[Tf2N]- with molar ratio 2:1 turned out to be the most efficient. The selectivity of Nd(III) separation from light and heavy rare-earth elements was studied and the optimal conditions of Nd(III) adsorption recovery and stripping by this SIR were chosen. It was found that in recovery efficiency of Nd(III) developed SIR exceeded the SIR containing Cyanex 923 (a mixture of monodentate trialkylphosphine oxides) and [C4mim]+[Tf2N]-.

Support loading effects on the performance of an extraction chromatographic resin: Toward improved separation of trivalent lanthanides

Changes in the level of impregnation of an Amberchrom CG-71m support with bis(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (HDEHP) are shown to alter the column efficiency, peak tailing, and metal ion uptake capacity associated with the resulting extraction chromatographic resins. Optimum efficiency and minimum peak tailing are observed at intermediate levels (ca. 20% (w/w)) of support loading. Metal ion uptake capacity is reduced relative to a commercial (loaded to 40% (w/w)) resin under the same conditions, however. The utility of the improved efficiency arising from reduced support loading is illustrated in the separation of selected trivalent lanthanide ions, including Gd(III) and Eu(III), whose resolution is unsatisfactory using commercial extraction chromatographic materials.

Environmentally friendly Pd(II) recovery from spent automotive catalysts using resins impregnated with a pincer-type extractant

Extractant-impregnated resins have potential for recovering platinum group metals selectively and efficiently. Herein, 1,3-bis(2-(octylthio)propan-2-yl)benzene (1), a pincer-type extractant, was impregnated in Amberlite XAD-7 resin (1-EIR), and the batch Pd(II) sorption conditions, including impregnated amount, shaking time, Pd(II) concentration, HCl concentration, and Pd(II) desorption reagents, were optimized. The maximum Pd(II) sorption capacity of 1-EIR was 49 mg g⁻¹ after 24 h in a 700 ppm Pd(II) solution. Over 20 adsorption–desorption cycles, 1-EIR showed good reusability, with a sorption percentage (S%) of > 92%. However, not all Pd(II) was desorbed from 1-EIR. Complete Pd(II) collection was achieved by combining desorption with flaking of the Pd–extractant complex from Pd(II)-loaded 1-EIR by Soxhlet extraction, as ~ 13 mg g⁻¹ remained after the 20th adsorption–desorption cycle by absorptiometric method. The sorption mechanism was elucidated based on the Langmuir isotherm model, thermodynamic parameters, and sorption kinetics. Pd(II) sorption by 1-EIR was spontaneous and endothermic, and the sorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model. Notably, 1-EIR also exhibited high selectivity for Pd(II) from a simulated mixed metal solution and a spent automotive catalyst leachate (S% = 98% and > 99%, respectively). Thus, this extractant-impregnated system is promising for selective Pd(II) recovery from spent automotive catalysts and other secondary resources.

Polymer-Supported Phosphoric, Phosphonic and Phosphinic Acids-From Synthesis to Properties and Applications in Separation Processes

Efficient separation technologies are crucial to the environment and world economy. The challenge posed to scientists is how to engineer selectivity towards a targeted substrate, especially from multicomponent solutions. Polymer-supported reagents have gained a lot of attention in this context, as they eliminate a lot of inconveniences concerning widely used solvent extraction techniques. Nevertheless, the choice of an appropriate ligand for immobilization may be derived from the behavior of soluble compounds under solvent extraction conditions. Organophosphorus compounds play a significant role in separation science and technology. The features they possess, such as variable oxidation states, multivalence, asymmetry and metal-binding properties, highlight their status as a unique and versatile class of compounds, capable of selective separations proceeding through different mechanisms. This review provides a detailed survey of polymers containing phosphoric, phosphonic and phosphinic acid functionalities in the side chain and covers main advances in the preparation and application of these materials in separation science, including the most relevant synthesis routes (Arbuzov, Perkow, Mannich, Kabachnik-Fields reactions, etc.), as well as the main stages in the development of organophosphorus resins and the most important achievements in the field.

Solvent impregnated resins for the treatment of aqueous solutions containing different compounds: a review

In this review paper, a complete study and analysis of the research articles dealing with the removal of various organic and inorganic pollutants using solvent impregnated resins (SIR) is carried out. The method of impregnation, characterizations of prepared resin, and regeneration techniques of different SIRs for batch and continuous fixed bed columns are presented. The effects of different operating parameters (e.g., loading of solvent on the resin, dosage of adsorbent, initial solute concentration, pH, temperature, time, ionic strength) on the separation efficiency of SIR in the batch mode are discussed. Thermodynamic parameters (change in Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy) are tabulated from the data available in the literature, and if not given, then their values are calculated and presented. The influence of parameters (flow rate, bed height, pH, concentration of the solution, etc.) on the fixed bed column performance is analyzed. Design aspects of the column are also discussed, and the dimensions of fixed bed columns for industrial applications are proposed.

Chelating polymers with valuable sorption potential for development of precious metal recycling technologies

A special attention is currently focused on the recovery of Au, Ag, Pt, Pd and Rh from both primary and secondary sources. From the wide range of sorbents that have been used in this respect, the required selectivity is proved only by the chelating polymers containing donor N, O and S atoms in their functional groups. This work presents the recent published researches on this topic, pointing out the capabilities of chelating sorbents based on organic synthetic polymers for a sustainable development. The chelating sorbents are differentiated and reviewed according to their synthesis strategy and compatibility with synthetic and real matrices. First, an overview on the novel functionalized polymers and impregnated resins with good selectivity for the recovery of most valuable precious metals from synthetic leach solutions is given. Subsequently, the performances of these materials in the selective and preconcentrative recovery of Au, Ag, Pt, Pd and Rh from simulated and real leachates are discussed. The viability of an integrated approach for the determination of precious metals from simulated solutions by solid phase spectrometry is highlighted. The transposition of chelating polymers’ potential in challenging technologies for precious metal recovery-reuse-recycling needs further research on directions that are proposed.

Lanthanide recovery by silica-Cyanex 272 material immobilized in alginate matrix

Mesoporous silica impregnate with Cyanex 272 (bis/2,4,4-trimethylpentyl/phosphinic acid) extractant was immobilized into an alginate matrix to obtain a composite sorbent easy to use and applicable in fixed-bed column continuous systems. The sorption efficiency of this material was tested for the recovery of Eu(III) ions from aqueous solutions in batch and continuous mode. The competition among rare earths ions (europium, lanthanum, and lutetium) and among rare earths and calcium or sodium ions was investigated. High calcium concentrations strongly reduce the sorption capacity of the alginate matrix that composes the hybrid material and the Cyanex 272 impregnated into silica powder improves the rare earths' sorption performance in this calcium charged media. The experimental breakthrough curves obtained were satisfactory fitted by Thomas model.

Kinetics Study of Solvent and Solid-Phase Extraction of Rare Earth Metals with Di-2-Ethylhexylphosphoric Acid

The kinetic features of solvent and solid-phase extraction of yttrium and iron (III) from simulated and industrial phosphoric acid solutions are revealed. Di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid (D2EHPA) was used as a liquid extractant, and D2EHPA-containing Levextrel resin—a co-polymerization product of styrene and divinylbenzene in the presence of D2EHPA—was used as a solid-phase extraction agent. Significant dependence of yttrium extraction rate constant on the stirring rate was revealed using the formal first-order kinetic equation. The data obtained characterizes a diffusion-limited process with an activation energy of 16.2 ± 1.3 kJ/mol. Temperature increase during the iron (III) extraction process leads to a changeover of a rate-limiting stage from kinetic to diffusion, accompanied by drop of activation energy from 40.0 ± 1.4 to 11.4 ± 1.2 kJ/mol. Effective separation of elements at the extraction stage is possible at temperatures of 283–300 K under non-equilibrium conditions of the ferric ions transport from aqueous to organic phase. This condition ensures a high yttrium–iron separation coefficient of 23.2 in 1.5–2 min. Extraction kinetics by Levextrel resin are described by Fick’s second law equation, which establishes the laws of diffusion in the solid grain of the organic phase with an activation energy of 18.5 ± 2.0 kJ/mol.

Removal of Rhodamine B from Water Using a Solvent Impregnated Polymeric Dowex 5WX8 Resin: Statistical Optimization and Batch Adsorption Studies

Herein, commercially available Dowex 5WX8, a cation exchange polymeric resin, was modified through solvent impregnation with t-butyl phosphate (TBP) to produce a solvent impregnated resin (SIR), which was tested for the removal of rhodamine B (RhB) from water in batch adsorption experiments. The effect of SIR dosage, contact time, and pH on RhB adsorption was studied and optimized by response surface methodology (RSM), interaction, Pareto, and surface plots. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were respectively used for characterizing SIR surface morphology and identifying active binding sites before and after RhB adsorption. SEM showed that the pristine SIR surface was covered with irregular size and shape spots with some pores, while RhB saturated SIR surface was non-porous. FTIR revealed the involvement of electrostatic and π-π interactions during RhB adsorption on SIR. Dosage of SIR, contact time, and their interaction significantly affected RhB adsorption on SIR, while pH and its interaction with dosage and contact time did not. The optimum identified experimental conditions were 0.16 g of SIR dose and 27.66 min of contact time, which allowed for 98.45% color removal. Moreover, RhB adsorption equilibrium results fitted the Langmuir isotherm with a maximum monolayer capacity (qmax) of 43.47 mg/g.

Preparation of chitosan functionalized polyamidoamine for the separation of trivalent lanthanides from acidic waste solution

The manuscript deals with the sorption of Am(III) and Eu(III) from pH medium using chitosan functionalized with dendrimer like polyamidoamine (PAMAM) polymers up to third generation. The PAMAM polymers were introduced into chitosan by two step processes and were characterized by various instrumental techniques like FTIR, XRD, TG-DTA. The sorption process was highly pH dependent for both Am(III) and Eu(III) with increasing trend for higher pH of the solution. Kinetics of equilibration was found to be fast with equilibrium attained in 10 min for both the metal ions. Pseudo 2nd order kinetics mechanism was found to be followed for both Am(III) and Eu(III). The sorption process of Eu(III) was found to fit the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum sorption capacity of 6.01 mg/g. There was no effect on the generation of PAMAM Dendron on the efficiency, kinetics or sorption capacity for Am(III) as well as Eu(III). The synthesized different generation of PAMAM functionalized chitosan is a promising material for removal of actinides and lanthanides from waste water solution.

Evaluation of activated composite membranes for the facilitated transport of phenol

In this work the results on the first use of an activated composite membrane (ACM) containing Cyanex 923 for the extraction and transport of phenol are presented. A new dense layer-ACM configuration constituted by piperazine showed better stability than that prepared with 1,3-phenylenediamine. The effects of several parameters on the transport of phenol such as feed phase pH, carrier concentration and stripping phase composition were evaluated. The performance of the membrane was also evaluated during continuous additions of phenol and for a long period of time, observing the same rate of extraction and reextraction. Moreover, phenol transport was evaluated starting from synthetic wastewater of resin production plants type. The results exhibit the potential use of ACMs in the elimination and transport of organic species, even when analyte is initially found in complex solutions.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of N235-impregnated resins for vanadium (V) adsorption

N235-impregnated resins were prepared using XAD-16HP macroporous adsorption resins as support with and without ultrasonic irradiation to evaluate the effects of ultrasound impregnation (UI) on the preparation and adsorption characteristics of the resins. The results show that the impregnation ratio of the solvent-impregnated resins (SIRs) prepared by ultrasound impregnation method (SIRs-UI) increases obviously but their adsorption capacity for V(V) just slightly increases and the utilization rate of the extractant decreases with the augmentation of ultrasound power. This may be caused by the fact that more extractant can enter into the deeper pores of the resins under high ultrasound intensity, but these extractants cannot effectively react with V(V). The impregnation equilibrium time of SIRs-UI can be obviously shortened in comparison to that of the SIRs prepared by conventional impregnation method (SIRs-CI) (3 min versus 240 min) due to the cavitation effect evoked by ultrasound. Ultrasonic irradiation may cause more N235 desorbed from the pores of the resin at low N235 content, resulting in lower adsorption capacity for V(V) than that of SIRs-CI, but the adsorption capacity is inverse at higher N235 content. N235 may be distributed more homogeneously in the pores of XAD-16HP with ultrasonic irradiation, thus, SIRs-UI presents higher adsorption capacity and stronger stability than SIRs-CI. This study manifests that ultrasound-assistant impregnation method may be a potential and promising technique for the preparation of SIRs.
