Photo-catalytic degradation of Metanil Yellow dye using TiO2 immobilized into polyvinyl alcohol/acrylic acid microgels prepared by ionizing radiation

Dye-Modified, Sonochemically Obtained Nano-SnS2 as an Efficient Photocatalyst for Metanil Yellow Removal

We investigate the possibility of modification of SnS2 powder through sonochemical synthesis with the addition of an organic ligand. For that purpose, two organic dyes are used, Phenol Red and Anthraquinone Violet. All obtained powders are characterized using XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR, and UV-Vis investigations. Synthesized samples showed composition and structural properties typical for sonochemically synthesized SnS2. However, investigation with the Tauc method revealed that SnS2 powder modified with Phenol Red exhibits a significant shift in value of optical bandgap to 2.56 eV, while unmodified SnS2 shows an optical bandgap value of 2.42 eV. The modification of SnS2 powder with Anthraquinone Violet was unsuccessful. The obtained nanopowders were utilized as photocatalysts in the process of Metanil Yellow degradation, revealing that SnS2 modified with Phenol Red shows about 23% better performance than the unmodified one. The mean sonochemical efficiency of the performed synthesis is also estimated as 9.35 µg/W.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Metanil Yellow Dyes Using Green Synthesized Zinc Oxide (ZnO) Nanocrystals

In this work, ZnO nanocrystals (NCs) have been effectively synthesized by a simple, efficient and cost-effective method using coconut husk extract as a novel fuel. The synthesized NCs are characterized by UV-Vis, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, EDX, Raman and PL studies. The obtained ZnO were found to be UV-active with a bandgap of 2.93 eV. The X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the crystallinity of the ZnO with hexagonally structured ZnO with a crystallite size of 48 nm, while the SEM analysis reveals the hexagonal bipyramid morphology. Photocatalytic activities of the synthesized ZnO NCs are used to degrade methylene blue and metanil yellow dyes.

Titanium dioxide and graphitic carbon nitride-based nanocomposites and nanofibres for the degradation of organic pollutants in water: a review

The paper reviews graphitic carbon nitride-based nanostructured photocatalytic materials and nanofibres for applications in water purification. Titanium dioxide has shown unique features that continue to attract research and development (R&D) due to its unique properties such as availability, ultraviolet absorptivity, photocatalysis, adsorption of pollutants and solar cell engineering. Graphitic carbon nitride is an attractive photocatalyst due to its non-toxicity characteristics, good visible light absorption and good thermal and chemical stabilities. In water purification, nanofibres are currently noticed due to their distinctive properties of effective separation and sometimes elimination of organic pollutants in water. In this review, synthesis and utility of doped titanium dioxide and carbon nitride with metal nanoparticles and polymeric nanofibres from nanocomposites as effective materials for the degradation of organic contaminations from water are discussed. The history, current trends and future perspectives are highlighted.

Synthesis, characterization, and photocatalytic activity of silver and zinc co-doped TiO2 nanoparticle for photodegradation of methyl orange dye in aqueous solution

In this study, TiO2 nanocrystals, 1 mol% Ag-doped TiO2, and 1 mol% Ag and 0.6 mol% Zn co-doped TiO2 powders were synthesized by the sol–gel route. Their photocatalytic activities on methyl orange dye under visible irradiation were investigated. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–visible spectroscopy (UV–vis), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The XRD results revealed the presence of a rutile phase with an average crystallite size of 9 and 11 nm. The UV–vis spectra showed a red-shift towards a longer wavelength with the corresponding decrease in band gap from 2.9 to 2.5 eV. The BET surface areas of the nanoparticles ranged from 4.7 to 11.8 m2 g−1 with an average pore size between 18.9 and 56.6 nm. The Ag-doped TiO2 has the largest surface area of 11.8 m2 g−1, whereas the Ag–Zn co-doped TiO2 was found to have the highest pore size and volume. The absorption bands at 750–500 cm−1 were attributed to the –O–Ti–O– bond in the TiO2 lattice. The photocatalytic efficiency was highest at an optimum pH of 4.1 for Ag–Zn co-doped TiO2. The results confirmed that Ag-doped and Ag–Zn co-doped TiO2 were more effective than pure TiO2. The kinetic data were fitted into a pseudo first-order equation using a Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model.

Supplementing multi-functional groups to polysulfone membranes using Azadirachta indica leaves powder for effective and highly selective acid recovery

Moderate and eco-pleasing ion-exchange trade membranes are in need to recover acid from industrial waste. Present study is focused on incorporation of plant waste (Azadirachta indica, neem leaves powder (NP)) of different composition as filler to polysulfone (PSf) membrane matrix to achieve acid recovery. Membranes were characterized, their chemical, mechanical and thermal stabilities and effectiveness in acid recovery via diffusion has been inspected. Multi-functional groups (-COOH, -NH₂, -OH, -OAc, -C = O) present in different components of NP contributes in their own means in H⁺ ion transportation through membrane in acid recovery. They assisted formation of hydrogen bond and provided channels for ion permeation, and facilitated selective transportation of H⁺ ion over Fe²⁺ ions and explained mechanism is in accordance with Grotthuss-type and vehicle mechanism. Membrane with 15% of NP showed better performance in terms of ion exchange capacity (IEC) and acid recovery, at optimum concentration of NP, composite the membrane showed highest IEC values of 3.9771 mmol/g, U^H+ value of ≈46.499 × 10^-3 m/h and greater separation factor ≈154, which is higher than commercially available DF-120 membrane. An original thought of utilizing NP in membrane matrix opens up promising opportunities for extremely straightforward, easy, cost-effective and greener methods of recovery acid.

Photocatalytic degradation of Maxilon C.I. basic dye using CS/CoFe2O4/GONCs as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton catalyst prepared by gamma irradiation

CS/CF/GONCs were synthesized via gamma irradiation cross-linking method with the aid of sonication. The nanocomposites exhibited a photo-Fenton catalytic feature for the degradation of Maxilon C.I. basic dye in aqueous medium using sunlight. The effects of pH, H2O2 concentration, and dosage of the catalyst, on the degradation rates of the dyes were examined. The optimal degradation rate was reached with 10mM H2O2 at pH 9.5. It was verified that the Maxilon C.I. basic dye degradation rate fits a pseudo-first-order kinetics for different initial concentrations of Maxilon C.I. dye. Fourth cyclic tests for Maxilon C.I. degradation showed that the magnetic catalyst was very stable, recoverable, highly active, and easy to separate using an external magnet. Hence, this magnetic catalyst has potential use in organic pollutant removal.
