Functionalization of Conductive Polymers through Covalent Postmodification

Organic chemical reactions have been used to functionalize preformed conducting polymers (CPs). The extensive work performed on polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole (PPy), and polythiophene (PT) is described together with the more limited work on other CPs. Two approaches have been taken for the functionalization: (i) direct reactions on the CP chains and (ii) reaction with substituted CPs bearing reactive groups (e.g., ester). Electrophilic aromatic substitution, S_EAr, is directly made on the non-conductive (reduced form) of the CPs. In PANI and PPy, the N-H can be electrophilically substituted. The nitrogen nucleophile could produce nucleophilic substitutions (SN) on alkyl or acyl groups. Another direct reaction is the nucleophilic conjugate addition on the oxidized form of the polymer (PANI, PPy or PT). In the case of PT, the main functionalization method was indirect, and the linking of functional groups via attachment to reactive groups was already present in the monomer. The same is the case for most other conducting polymers, such as poly(fluorene). The target properties which are improved by the functionalization of the different polymers is also discussed.

Electrosynthesis and Electrochromism of a New Crosslinked Polydithienylpyrrole with Diphenylpyrenylamine Subunits

A new electroactive monomer with two 2,5-di(2-thienyl)pyrrole (SNS) units and one diphenylpyrenylamine (DPPA) subunit, namely N,N-bis(4-(2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-phenyl)-1-aminopyrene (DPPA-2SNS), was synthesized from 1,4-di-(2-thienyl)butane-1,4-dione with N,N-di(4-aminophenyl)-1-aminopyrene through the Paal–Knorr condensation reaction. Visible and near-infrared (NIR) electrochromic polymer films could be facilely generated on the ITO-glass surface by the electrochemical polymerization of DPPA-2SNS in an electrolyte solution. The electro-synthesized polymer films exhibit multi-staged redox processes and multi-colored anodic electrochromic behavior. A multi-colored electrochromism, with yellowish orange, greyish blue, and purplish black colors, was observed in the polymer film by applying a positive potential. The polymer films exhibit reasonable coloration efficiency, fast response time, and good cycling stability, especially when switched between neutral and the first oxidation states. For comparison, N-(1-pyrenyl)-2,5-di(2-thienyl)pyrrole (Py-SNS) was also prepared and characterized with electrochemical and electro-optical properties.

Electrochemical synthesis, optical, electrochemical and electrochromic characterizations of indene and 1,2,5-thiadiazole-based poly(2,5-dithienylpyrrole) derivatives

PBDTA/PProDOT-Et₂ ECD showed high ΔT_max (43.8%) and satisfactory cyclic voltammetry stability, whereas P(BDTA-co-DTP)/PProDOT-Et₂ ECD showed high ΔT_max (44.0%) and coloration efficiency (504.6 cm² C⁻¹).

Novel poly(2,5-dithienylpyrrole) (PSNS) derivatives functionalized with azobenzene, coumarin and fluorescein chromophore units: spectroelectrochemical properties and electrochromic device applications

The combination of strong chromophore units and a 2,5-dithienylpyrrole (SNS) monomer backbone resulted in interesting electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical behaviors.

An efficient synthesis of ortho-aniline derivatives through aromatic C–H azidation catalyzed by Cu(OAc)₂ have been disclosed. The amino group plays an ortho-directing effect in the azidation reactions, regiospecifically affording the mono-azidated derivative as the sole products.
