Hydrogel Adsorbents for the Removal of Hazardous Pollutants—Requirements and Available Functions as Adsorbent

Over the last few decades, various adsorption functions of polymer hydrogels for the removal of hazardous pollutants have been developed. The performance of hydrogel adsorbents depends on the constituents of the gels and the functions produced by the polymer networks of the gels. Research on hydrogels utilizing the characteristic functions of polymer networks has increased over the last decade. The functions of polymer networks are key to the development of advanced adsorbents for the removal of various pollutants. No review has discussed hydrogel adsorbents from the perspective of the roles and functions of polymer networks in hydrogels. This paper briefly reviews the basic requirements of adsorbents and the general characteristics of hydrogels as adsorbents. Thereafter, hydrogels are reviewed on the basis of the roles and functions of the polymer networks in them for the removal of hazardous pollutants by introducing studies published over the last decade. The application of hydrogels as adsorbents for the removal of hazardous pollutants is discussed as well.

Smart Adsorbents for Aquatic Environmental Remediation

A noticeable interest and steady rise in research studies reporting the design and assessment of smart adsorbents for sequestering aqueous metal ions and xenobiotics has occurred in the last decade. This motivates compiling and reviewing the characteristics, potentials, and performances of this new adsorbent generation's metal ion and xenobiotics sequestration. Herein, stimuli-responsive adsorbents that respond to its media (as internal triggers; e.g., pH and temperature) or external triggers (e.g., magnetic field and light) are highlighted. Readers are then introduced to selective adsorbents that selectively capture materials of interest. This is followed by a discussion of self-healing and self-cleaning adsorbents. Finally, the review ends with research gaps in material designs.

Effective synthesis of a hexacyclic-steroid derivative from 4-hydroxyestrone

Several studies have been reported for the preparation of hexacyclic-steroid derivatives; however, some reagents are expensive and require special conditions for handling. In this way, the objective of this study was to synthesize a hexacyclic-steroid derivative from 4-hydroxyestrone. The chemical structure was evaluated through both ¹H NMR and ¹³C NMR spectroscopic analysis. The results showed good performance of the hexacyclic-steroid derivative. In conclusion in this study, an easy method for the preparation of the hexacyclic-steroid derivative is reported.

Synthesis, Characterization of a New Polyacrylic Acid Superabsorbent, Some Heavy Metal Ion Sorption, the Adsorption Isotherms, and Quantum Chemical Investigation

Poly(acrylic acid/Kryptofix 23-Dimethacrylate) superabsorbent polymer [P (AA/Kry23-DM) SAP] was synthesized by solution polymerization to remove Co, Ni, Cu, Cd, Mn, Zn, Pb, Cr, and Fe ions in water and improve the quality of the water. Kry23-DM cross-linker (1,4,7,13,16-Pentaoxa-10,19 diazo cyclohexene icosane di methacrylate) was synthesized using Kry23 and methacryloyl chloride. The characterization of the molecules was done by FTIR, TGA, DSC, and SEM techniques. The effects of parameters such as pH, concentration, and the metal ion interaction on the heavy metal ions uptaking of SAP was investigated. It was observed that P (AA/Kry23-DM) SAP has maximum water absorption, and the absorption increases with the pH increase. Adsorption rates and sorption capacity, desorption ratios, competitive sorption (q_cs), and distribution coefficient (log D) of P(AA/Kry23-DM) SAP were studied as a function of time and pH with the heavy metal ion concentration. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms of the P (AA/Kry23-DM) SAP were investigated to verify the metal uptake. Molecular mechanic (MM2), Assisted Model Building with Energy Refinement (AMBER), and optimized potentials for liquid simulations (OPLS) methods. were used in quantum chemical calculations for the conformational analysis of the cross-linker and the SAP. ΔH⁰_f calculations of the cross-linker and the superabsorbent were made using Austin Model 1(AM1) method.

Synthesis and Characterization of Poly(1,4,7-Trioxacycloundecane-8,11-dione) Macrocyclic Functionalized Hydrogel for High Selectivity Adsorption and Complexation of Bismuth Ion

Macrocyclic functional hydrogels incorporating new poly cyclic active sites (1,4,7-trioxacycloundecane-8,11-dione) within their entire network, have been synthesized. Using the high-dilution coupling of the bi-functional monomers maleic acid and bis(chloroethyl)ether in a sol-gel chemistry synthesis, 11-membered chelate rings infused with three oxygen donor atoms were created and characterized, and their structures confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic analyses. The macrocyclic gel, designed for selective host-guest adsorption and complexation of metal substrates, was initially tested against an aqueous set of 14 metal competitive solutions, where it demonstrated exclusive selectivity for Bi3+aq, with the other metals exhibiting zero adsorption. Further analysis using binary and single ion Bi3+-containing solutions showed a near-complete removal of Bi3+ using this polycyclic hydrogel, with 98% extraction efficiency and q = 9.80 mg/g. These results clearly confirm that the 1,4,7-trioxacycloundecane-8,11-dione cyclic sites are most suitable for high selectivity and capture of Bi. The metal substrates were entrapped within the 1,4,7-trioxacycloundecane-8,11-dione cyclic sites. Evidently, by exploiting the host-guest complexation chemistry of macrocycles, we were able to design hydrogel adsorbents whose networks were comprised entirely of macrocyclic active groups for possible purification works of copper involving bismuth impurities, and/or for efficient selective uptake and recovery of bismuth trace ions existing in highly competitive environments such as sea water.
