Abstract
The rise of heterocycle cations, a new class of stable cations, has fueled faster growth of research interest in heterocycle cation-attached anion exchange membranes (AEMs). However, once cations are grafted onto backbones, the effect of backbones on properties of AEMs must also be taken into account. In order to comprehensively study the influence of cations effect and backbones effect on AEMs performance, a series of AEMs were prepared by grafting spacer cations, heterocycles cations, and aromatic cations onto brominated poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (BPPO) or poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) (PVB) backbones, respectively. Spacer cation [trimethylamine (TMA), N,N-dimethylethylamine (DMEA)]-attached AEMs showed general ion transportation and stability behaviors, but exhibited high cationic reaction efficiency. Heterocycle cation [1-methylpyrrolidine (MPY), 1-methylpiperidine (MPrD)]-attached AEMs showed excellent chemical stability, but their ion conduction properties were unimpressive. Aromatic cation [1-methylimidazole (MeIm), N,N-dimethylaniline (DMAni)]-attached AEMs exhibited superior ionic conductivity, while their poor cations stabilities hindered the application of the membranes. Besides, it was found that PVB-based AEMs had excellent backbone stability, but BPPO-based AEMs exhibited higher OH- conductivity and cation stability than those of the same cations grafted PVB-based AEMs due to their higher water uptake (WU). For example, the ionic conductivities (ICs) of BPPO-TMA and PVB-TMA at 80 °C were 53.1 and 38.3 mS cm-1 , and their WU was 152.3 and 95.1 %, respectively. After the stability test, the IC losses of BPPO-TMA and PVB-TMA were 21.4 and 32.2 %, respectively. The result demonstrated that the conductivity and stability properties of the AEMs could be enhanced by increasing the WU of the membranes. These findings allowed the matching of cations to the appropriate backbones and reasonable modification of the AEM structure. In addition, these results helped to fundamentally understand the influence of cation effect and backbone effect on AEM performance.

Abstract
The interplay between the ion exchange capacity, water content and concentration dependences of conductivity, diffusion permeability, and counterion transport numbers (counterion permselectivity) of CJMA-3, CJMA-6 and CJMA-7 (Hefei Chemjoy Polymer Materials Co. Ltd., China) anion-exchange membranes (AEMs) is analyzed using the application of the microheterogeneous model to experimental data. The structure-properties relationship for these membranes is examined when they are bathed by NaCl and Na2SO4 solutions. These results are compared with the characteristics of the well-studied homogenous Neosepta AMX (ASTOM Corporation, Japan) and heterogeneous AMH-PES (Mega a.s., Czech Republic) anion-exchange membranes. It is found that the CJMA-6 membrane has the highest counterion permselectivity (chlorides, sulfates) among the CJMAED series membranes, very close to that of the AMX membrane. The CJMA-3 membrane has the transport characteristics close to the AMH-PES membrane. The CJMA-7 membrane has the lowest exchange capacity and the highest volume fraction of the intergel spaces filled with an equilibrium electroneutral solution. These properties predetermine the lowest counterion transport number in CJMA-7 among other investigated AEMs, which nevertheless does not fall below 0.87 even in 1.0 eq L-1 solutions of NaCl or Na2SO4. One of the reasons for the decrease in the permselectivity of CJMAED membranes is the extended macropores, which are localized at the ion-exchange material/reinforcing cloth boundaries. In relatively concentrated solutions, the electric current prefers to pass through these well-conductive but nonselective macropores rather than the highly selective but low-conductive elements of the gel phase. It is shown that the counterion permselectivity of the CJMA-7 membrane can be significantly improved by coating its surface with a dense homogeneous ion-exchange film.

Abstract
Herein, we present the synthesis of five styrene-based poly(ionic liquids) (PILs) containing (covalently linked) saturated N-heterocyclic cations with various ring sizes (i.e., methylpyrrolidinium, methylpiperidinium, methylazepanium, methylazocanium, and methylazonanium). High alkaline chemical stability was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy after 4 weeks in 40 mol equiv of KOH (1.0 M KOH in D2O) at 80 °C for PILs with 5-, 6-, 7-, and 8-membered ring cations; a requirement for polymer electrolyte separators in long-lasting alkaline fuel cells. Additionally, ion conductivity of PILs increased by 4 orders of magnitude with increasing water content, where a master percolation power law curve was observed, that is, similar conductivity versus water volume fraction for all PILs, regardless of cation size.
