Recent progress of antibacterial hydrogels in wound dressings

Hydrogels are essential biomaterials due to their favorable biocompatibility, mechanical properties similar to human soft tissue extracellular matrix, and tissue repair properties. In skin wound repair, hydrogels with antibacterial functions are especially suitable for dressing applications, so novel antibacterial hydrogel wound dressings have attracted widespread attention, including the design of components, optimization of preparation methods, strategies to reduce bacterial resistance, etc. In this review, we discuss the fabrication of antibacterial hydrogel wound dressings and the challenges associated with the crosslinking methods and chemistry of the materials. We have investigated the advantages and limitations (antibacterial effects and antibacterial mechanisms) of different antibacterial components in the hydrogels to achieve good antibacterial properties, and the response of hydrogels to stimuli such as light, sound, and electricity to reduce bacterial resistance. Conclusively, we provide a systematic summary of antibacterial hydrogel wound dressings findings (crosslinking methods, antibacterial components, antibacterial methods) and an outlook on long-lasting antibacterial effects, a broader antibacterial spectrum, diversified hydrogel forms, and the future development prospects of the field.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels: The Old and New Functional Materials

Hydrogels have three-dimensional network structures, high water content, good flexibility, biocompatibility, and stimulation response, which have provided a unique role in many fields such as industry, agriculture, and medical treatment. Poly(vinyl alcohol) PVA hydrogel is one of the oldest composite hydrogels. It has been extensively explored due to its chemical stability, nontoxic, good biocompatibility, biological aging resistance, high water-absorbing capacity, and easy processing. PVA-based hydrogels have been widely investigated in drug carriers, articular cartilage, wound dressings, tissue engineering, and other intelligent materials, such as self-healing and shape-memory materials, supercapacitors, sensors, and other fields. In this paper, the discovery, development, preparation, modification methods, and applications of PVA functionalized hydrogels are reviewed, and their potential applications and future research trends are also prospected.

Polymeric antibacterial materials: design, platforms and applications

Over the past decades, the morbidity and mortality caused by pathogen invasion remain stubbornly high even though medical care has increasingly improved worldwide. Besides, impacted by the ever-growing multidrug-resistant bacterial strains, the crisis owing to the abuse and misuse of antibiotics has been further exacerbated. Among the wide range of antibacterial strategies, polymeric antibacterial materials with diversified synthetic strategies exhibit unique advantages (e.g., their flexible structural design, processability and recyclability, tuneable platform construction, and safety) for extensive antibacterial fields as compared to low molecular weight organic or inorganic antibacterial materials. In this review, polymeric antibacterial materials are summarized in terms of four structure styles and the most representative material platforms to achieve specific antibacterial applications. The superiority and defects exhibited by various polymeric antibacterial materials are elucidated, and the design of various platforms to elevate their efficacy is also described. Moreover, the application scope of polymeric antibacterial materials is summarized with regard to tissue engineering, personal protection, and environmental security. In the last section, the subsequent challenges and direction of polymeric antibacterial materials are discussed. It is highly expected that this critical review will present an insight into the prospective development of antibacterial functional materials.
