Removal of anionic azo dyes from aqueous solutions by quaternary ammonium salt-functionalized fibers with adjustable surface microenvironments

Preparation and Property Analysis of Antibacterial Fiber Membranes Based on Hyperbranched Polymer Quaternary Ammonium Salts

Due to their excellent properties, antimicrobial fiber membranes are widely applied in bioprotective materials. This work addresses the preparation of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)-based fiber membranes with active antimicrobial properties. 2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride-terminated hyperbranched polymer (HBP-HTC) was synthesized and used as an antimicrobial agent. The fiber membranes were obtained by electrospinning a mixed solution of HBP-HTC and TPU. Different electrospinning conditions were investigated, such as the spinning voltage and drum rotation speed. The fiber membrane prepared under a 22 kV anode voltage and 100 rpm rotation speed had an average fiber diameter of 1.66 μm with a concentrated diameter distribution. Antibacterial tests showed that when the fiber membrane was loaded with 1500 mg/kg of HBP-HTC, the antibacterial rates of E. coli as well as S. aureus both reached 99.99%, exhibiting excellent proactive antimicrobial performance. Moreover, the protective performance of the fiber membrane was outstanding, with a filtration efficiency of 99.9%, a hydrostatic pressure resistance greater than 16,758 Pa, and a moisture permeability of 2711.0 g⋅(m2⋅d)-1.

Waste lignin-based cationic flocculants treating dyeing wastewater: Fabrication, performance, and mechanism

Lignin is often considered to be a complex polymeric structural material with excellent scalability. Reduced pressure distillation, a novel effective way, was proposed to recover reusable waste lignin from textile degumming black liquor. The structure of the recovered material was determined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) and Klason Component Analysis. Recycled lignin (RL) was used as the basis for the synthesis of a cationic recycled lignin-based polymers (CRLM) through graft polymerizing cationic monomer (DMC). The optimum synthesis conditions were obtained by conducting orthogonal experiments using the cationicity as the studied parameter, while selecting pH, DMC/RL, reaction temperature and time as independent variables. Recovery experiments showed that the maximum recovery concentration of RL in the black liquor was 5 g/L, with a purity of approximately 83 %. Orthogonal experiments showed that a low DMC/RL ratio was crucial for the synthesis of flocculants. When the molar ratio of DMC/RL was 3:1, the cationicity of the prepared CRLM was as high as 11.32 %. Zeta potential and decolorization experiments also confirmed the stable decolorization performance of CRLM in three kinds of anionic dye wastewater. The experimental results showed that charge neutralization, chemical bonding forces and auxiliary effects play great role to remove anionic dyes, resulting in 94 %, 89 % and 94.9 % removal against Reactive Red 195 (RR195), Acid Red 18 (AR18) and Direct 168 (DB168) respectively. Therefore, this study demonstrated the potential of using recycled waste lignin as synthesize lignin-based flocculants in the field of printing and dyeing wastewater by treating waste with waste.

Carbon nanotube-decorated hierarchical porous nickel/carbon hybrid derived from nickel-based metal-organic framework for enhanced methyl blue adsorption

This work reports the incorporation of coordinated water into Ni-BTC nanorods (Ni-BTC-O) which induces their structural transformation to Ni-BTC nanofibres (Ni-BTC-F). The carbonization of the Ni-BTC nanofibres at 600 °C results in the formation of carbon nanotube (CNT)-decorated hierarchical porous nickel/carbon hybrid (labelled as Ni/C-600) with enlarged pores. In contrast, the Ni/C hybrid obtained from the carbonization of the original (unmodified) Ni-BTC nanorods (Ni-BTC-O) at 600 °C (labelled as Ni-BTC-O-600) exhibits smaller pore size and does not show the formation of CNTs. The Ni/C-600 hybrid derived from Ni-BTC-F shows a very high adsorption capacity of 686.8 mg g^-1 toward methyl blue (MB) dye. This is approximately 4.8 times higher than the adsorption capacity of Ni-BTC-O-600 (144.1 mg g^-1). The higher adsorption performance of Ni/C-600 relative to Ni-BTC-O-600 can be attributed to its larger pore volume, hierarchical porosity, and additional adsorption sites provided by the CNTs. In addition, the Ni/C-600 hybrid can maintain 90% of its adsorption capacity after 5 consecutive cycles, demonstrating its potential as an efficient and recyclable adsorbent for MB dye.

Quaternary Ammonium Salts: Insights into Synthesis and New Directions in Antibacterial Applications

The overuse of antibiotics has led to the emergence of a large number of antibiotic-resistant genes in bacteria, and increasing evidence indicates that a fungicide with an antibacterial mechanism different from that of antibiotics is needed. Quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) are a biparental substance with good antibacterial properties that kills bacteria through simple electrostatic adsorption and insertion into cell membranes/altering of cell membrane permeability. Therefore, the probability of bacteria developing drug resistance is greatly reduced. In this review, we focus on the synthesis and application of single-chain QASs, double-chain QASs, heterocyclic QASs, and gemini QASs (GQASs). Some possible structure-function relationships of QASs are also summarized. As such, we hope this review will provide insight for researchers to explore more applications of QASs in the field of antimicrobials with the aim of developing systems for clinical applications.

Adsorption of an Anionic Surfactant (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate) from an Aqueous Solution by Modified Cellulose with Quaternary Ammonium

In this study, a method of removing an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) from an aqueous solution by cellulose modified with quaternary ammonium cation was discussed. Cellulose, as the adsorbent, was obtained from medical cotton balls, and the quaternary ammonium cation (synthesized from dodecyl dimethyl tertiary amine and epichlorohydrin) was grafted onto the sixth hydroxyl group of D-glucose in the cellulose by the Williamson reaction under alkaline conditions. The modified cellulose was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS); and the zeta potential of the material was also measured after confirmation of the synthesis of quaternary ammonium salts by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). From these analyses, a peak of the quaternary ammonium group was observed at 1637 cm^-1; and it was found that the surface of the material exhibited a positive charge in pH 2-7. The optimal conditions for SDS adsorption by modified cellulose were pH of 7, contact time of 3 h, and temperature of 60 °C in this study. Typical adsorption isotherms (Langmuir and Freundlich) were determined for the adsorption process, and the maximal adsorption capacity was estimated as 32.5 mg g^-1. The results of adsorption kinetics were more consistent with the pseudo-second-order equation, indicating that the adsorption process was mainly controlled by chemical adsorption. Furthermore, thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process of SDS on the modified cellulose was endothermic and spontaneous and that an increasing temperature was conducive to adsorption.

Cationic Lignocellulose Nanofibers from Agricultural Waste as High-Performing Adsorbents for the Removal of Dissolved and Colloidal Substances

The accumulation of dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS) in the increasingly closed paper circulating water system can seriously lower the productivity and safety of papermaking machines, and it has been a challenge to develop an adsorbent with low cost, high adsorption efficiency and large adsorption capacity for DCS removal. In this study, cationic lignocellulose nanofibers (CLCNF) were obtained by cationic modification of agricultural waste bagasse in deep eutectic solvents (DES) followed by mechanical defibrillation, and then CLCNF were employed as an adsorbent for DCS model contaminant polygalacturonic acid (PGA) removal. CLCNF was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The analytical results confirmed the successful preparation of CLCNF with 4.6–7.9 nm diameters and 0.97–1.76 mmol/g quaternary ammonium groups. The effects of quaternary ammonium group contents, pH, contact time and initial concentration of PGA on the adsorption were investigated in a batch adsorption study. According to the results, the cationic modification significantly enhanced the adsorption of PGA by CLCNF and the adsorption performance increased with the increase of the quaternary ammonium group contents. The adsorption of PGA on CLCNF followed the pseudo-second-order and the fitted Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorption showed fast initial kinetics and the experimental maximum adsorption capacity was 1054 mg/g, which is much higher than PGA adsorbents previously reported in the literature. Therefore, CLCNF with high cationic group content developed in this paper is a promising adsorbent for DCS removal.

Ethylenediamine and Pentaethylene Hexamine Modified Bamboo Sawdust by Radiation Grafting and Their Adsorption Behavior for Phosphate

Phosphate is an important component for the growth of plants and microorganisms; however, excess phosphate causes serious eutrophication in natural waters. New potential low-loss adsorbents from natural biomass for phosphate removal are desired. Bamboo is one of the most abundant renewable cellulose resources; however, the pure bamboo cellulose is poor to adsorb phosphate. To enhance the adsorption capacity, in this work, bamboo sawdust (BS) was chemically modified by two kinds of amines. First, glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) was grafted on BS using radiation induced graft polymerization. Then, the GMA-grafted BS was further modified by a ring-opening reaction with amines, including ethylenediamine (EDA) and pentaethylene hexamine (PEHA). The amine groups were then quaternized to prepare the BS-GMA-EDA-Q and BS-GMA-PEHA-Q adsorbents. The adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, TG, and XPS analysis. The adsorption performances of the adsorbents for phosphate were evaluated through batch experiments. The adsorption by BS-GMA-EDA-Q and BS-GMA-PEHA-Q both well obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, indicating that the adsorption process was chemical monomolecular layer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacities for BS-GMA-EDA-Q and BS-GMA-PEHA-Q calculated by the Langmuir model were 85.25 and 152.21 mg/g, respectively. A total of 1 mol/L HCl was used to elute the saturated adsorbents. A negligible decrease in adsorption capacity was found after five adsorption–desorption cycles.

Efficient Adsorption of Anionic Dyes by Ammoniated Waste Polyacrylonitrile Fiber: Mechanism and Practicability

Adsorption is one of the commonly used methods in wastewater treatment, but it has the problem of high cost and a complicated production process. In this paper, a low-cost and efficient decolorizing adsorbent was successfully prepared based on waste polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF). The waste PANF was ammoniated by propylene diamine derivates (PANAMF), and benzylamine (PANABMF) and quaternary ammonium ions (PANQMF) were introduced for PANAMF to regulate hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity. With acidic red 249 as the model anionic dye, influences of the adsorption center structure, the degree of modification, the concentration of acid, the dye structure, and the auxiliary agent in the solution on the dye adsorption performance were studied. Isothermal models, kinetic models, reusability, and continuous application ability of the fiber adsorbent were discussed. PANAMF, PANABMF, and PANAQF exhibit excellent adsorption performance compared to the common adsorbent. After protonation, the saturation adsorption value can reach 2051.3 mg/g for PANAMF. PANAMF also exhibited excellent reusability, and the adsorption capacity after being reused eight times still can keep 72.7% of that for the first time. The adsorption of the anionic dye for PANAMF is a chemisorption process, and the rate-determining step is changed from the diffuse step to the adsorption on the surface with the adsorption time. PANAMF can also be used in the continuous flow process, and the absorption amount is similar to that in the batch adsorption, which shows excellent commercial application potential.
