Application of polydimethylsiloxane in photocatalyst composite materials: A review

Dielectric and Ultrasonic Properties of PDMS/TiO2 Nanocomposites

This work presents the dielectric and ultrasonic properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposites filled with titanium dioxide nanoparticles. The dielectric study was performed over a very broad range of frequencies (20 Hz-3 THz). The dielectric permittivity was almost frequency-independent in all the composites at room temperature over the whole range of measurement frequencies, and the dielectric losses were very low under these conditions (less than 2). The dielectric permittivity strongly increases with the nanoparticle concentration according to the Maxwell-Garnet model. Therefore, the investigated composites are suitable for various flexible electronic applications, particularly in the microwave and terahertz frequency ranges. Dielectric dispersion and increased attenuation of ultrasonic waves were observed at lower temperatures (below 280 K) due to the relaxation of polymer molecules at the PDMS/TiO2 interface and in the polymer matrix. The relaxation time followed the Vogel-Vulcher law, while the freezing temperature increased with the titanium dioxide concentration due to interactions between the polymer molecules and nanoparticles. The significant hysteresis in the ultrasonic properties indicated that titanium dioxide acts as a crystallization center. This is confirmed by the correlation between the hysteresis in the ultrasonic properties and the structure of the composites. The small difference in the activation energy values obtained from the ultrasonic and dielectric investigations is related to the fact that the dielectric dispersion is slightly broader than the Debye-type dielectric dispersion.

Graphitic carbon nitride-adorned PDMS self-cleaning floating photocatalyst for simultaneous removal of Rhodamine B, Crystal Violet and Malachite Green from a ternary dye mixture

Graphitic carbon nitride-adorned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) floating catalyst was prepared by a simple procedure. The prepared catalyst was utilized for the simultaneous mitigation of recalcitrant organic pollutants such as Rhodamine B, Crystal Violet and Malachite Green from their ternary mixture for the first time. Derivative spectroscopic method was used to calculate the degradation efficiencies of individual dyes in the mixture. The prepared catalyst showed a consistent degradation performance up to 4 cycles inducing a degradation of 94.02%, 92.1% and 97.13% of Rhodamine B, Crystal Violet and Malachite Green, respectively, in a dye(s) solution with a catalytic loading of 0.5 g L-1. A kinetic analysis of the dye(s) degradation under visible light was carried out during the course of this work up to 120 min. A detailed characterization of the surface of this novel catalyst was carried out in this study by SEM, EDX, XRD, DRS, DTG, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy and provided the experimental proof for the catalyst presenting high hydrophobicity, self-cleaning ability, good recyclability and high chemical stability.

From passive to emerging smart silicones

Amassing remarkable properties, silicones are practically indispensable in our everyday life. In most classic applications, they play a passive role in that they cover, seal, insulate, lubricate, water-proof, weather-proof etc. However, silicone science and engineering are highly innovative, seeking to develop new compounds and materials that meet market demands. Thus, the unusual properties of silicones, coupled with chemical group functionalization, has allowed silicones to gradually evolve from passive materials to active ones, meeting the concept of “smart materials”, which are able to respond to external stimuli. In such cases, the intrinsic properties of polysiloxanes are augmented by various chemical modifications aiming to attach reactive or functional groups, and/or by engineering through proper cross-linking pattern or loading with suitable fillers (ceramic, magnetic, highly dielectric or electrically conductive materials, biologically active, etc.), to add new capabilities and develop high value materials. The literature and own data reflecting the state-of-the art in the field of smart silicones, such as thermoplasticity, self-healing ability, surface activity, electromechanical activity and magnetostriction, thermo-, photo-, and piezoresponsivity are reviewed.

Sustainable and efficient reduction of pollutants by immobilized PEG-P/Ag/Ag2O/Ag3PO4/TiO2 photocatalyst for purification of saline wastewater

In this study, we have reported an efficient and stable degradation of pollutants at salinity condition using newly developed solar-light-driven silicone-TiO₂ based photocatalytic immobilized system. The interfacial layer of Silicone-PEG-P/Ag/Ag₂O/Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ (S-PEG/PAgT) photocatalyst exhibited higher surface roughness, hydrophobicity, better light absorption, and narrow band gap than S-TiO₂. The Rh B degradation by S-PEG/PAgT (91.2%) was 1.71 folds higher than S-TiO₂ (53.5%) under simulated solar light irradiation. The reduction rate was significantly higher in S-PEG/PAgT (0.0792 min^-1) than S-TiO₂ (0.0229 min^-1). The S-PEG/PAgT demonstrated high TOC removal (>80%), high repeatability (10 cycles) and excellent activity after 30 days of incubation in aqueous NaCl. The mechanism analysis revealed the synergistic effect of surface morphology with irregular chamfered edges and photoinduced reactive species (O₂^-) with successive formation of free chlorine radicals (Cl) contributed to the removal of pollutants in saline wastewater. Therefore, considering the above advantages of high efficiency and effective elimination of organics illustrates the potential of newly developed S-PEG/PAgT immobilized system in long-term practical treatment real seawater and ballast water.

An Overview of Polymer-Supported Catalysts for Wastewater Treatment through Light-Driven Processes

In recent years, alarm has been raised due to the presence of chemical contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in water. This concern is due to the risks associated with their exposure, even in small amounts. These complex compounds cannot be removed or degraded by existing technologies in wastewater treatment plants. Therefore, advanced oxidation processes have been studied, with the objective of developing a technology capable of complementing the conventional water treatment plants. Heterogenous photocatalysis stands out for being a cost-effective and environmentally friendly process. However, its most common form (with suspended catalytic particles) requires time-consuming and costly downstream processes. Therefore, the heterogeneous photocatalysis process with a supported catalyst is preferable. Among the available supports, polymeric ones stand out due to their favorable characteristics, such as their transparency, flexibility and stability. This is a relatively novel process; therefore, there are still some gaps in the scientific knowledge. Thus, this review article aims to gather the existing information about this process and verify which questions are still to be answered.

Cu(II)/Guanidine Functionalized Disiloxane Complex of Supramolecular Structures for Visible Light-Driven Photocatalysis of Congo Red

The present study focuses on the synthesis of a new guanidine-functionalized disiloxane used as a ligand to obtain copper(II) complexes linked through hydrogen bonding into supramolecular structures. A two-step procedure was used to prepare the guanidine functionalized disiloxane ligand. Firstly, the hydrosilylation reaction between the siloxane precursor, namely 1,1,3,3-tetramethyldisiloxane (DS), and the allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) was performed in the presence of a platinum catalyst resulting in glycidoxypropyldisiloxane (DS-PMO) intermediary compound. In the second step, DS-PMO derivative was modified with 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl guanidine (TMGu) to obtain the guanidine-functionalized disiloxane ligand (bGu-DS) that was further used for the coordination of copper(II) acetate hydrate. The structures of the ligand and of its Cu(II) complex were confirmed by spectral methods (IR, UV-Vis, NMR, XRF) and correlated with theoretical calculations using semi-empirical PM6 and DFT methods. The copper(II) complex was found to exhibit low optical band gap energy (2.9 eV) and good photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation in the decomposition of Congo Red (CR). A dye removal efficiency higher than 97% at the catalyst and CR concentrations of 1 and, respectively, 200 mg/L was obtained.
