Synthesis of gelatin and green tea based stretchable self-healing material of biomedical importance

Sustainable papaya plant waste and green tea residue composite films integrated with starch and gelatin for active food packaging applications

This study explores the sustainable utilization of wastes from a papaya plant (papaya peels (PP), papaya seeds (PS), leaf-stem (PL)) and dried green tea residues (GTR) for the synthesis of bioplastics. The dried GTR were individually blended with each papaya waste extract and then boiled in water to get three composite papaya plant waste-green tea supernatants. Potato starch and gelatin-based functional films were prepared by integrating each with the composite papaya waste-green tea supernatant liquid. This work introduces a dissolved organic matter (DOM) study to the field of bioplastics, with the goal of identifying the organic components and macromolecules inherent in the PW supernatants. When compared with the films prepared solely from papaya waste (PW) supernatants, PW-GTR composite supernatant films prevent UV light transmission with superior antioxidant and mechanical properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were utilized to characterize the starch and gelatin PW-GTR films. Owing to the exceptional antioxidant, UV barrier, and remarkable biodegradable properties of the starch/PW/GTR and gelatin/PW/GTR composite films, make them ideal for use in food packaging applications.

Gelatin/Polyacrylamide-Based Antimicrobial and Self-Healing Hydrogel Film for Wound Healing Application

In this study, a self-healing, adhesive, and superabsorbent film made of gelatin, poly(acrylamide), and boric acid (GelAA) was successfully synthesized using a free radical reaction mechanism. The optimized film showed a remarkable 2865 ± 42% water absorptivity and also exhibited excellent self-healing behavior. The GelAA films were further loaded with silver nanoclusters (AgNCs) and ursodeoxycholic acid (UDC) (loading efficiency = 10%) to develop UDC/Ag/GelAA films. The loading of AgNCs in UDC/Ag/GelAA films helped in exhibiting 99.99 ± 0.01% antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, making them very effective against bacterial infections. Additionally, UDC/Ag/GelAA films had 77.19 ± 0.52% porosity and showed 90% of UDC release in 30 h, which helps in improving the cell proliferation. Our research provides an easy but highly effective process for synthesizing a hydrogel film, which is an intriguing choice for wound healing applications without the use of antibiotics.

Effects of Fermented Green Tea Waste Extract Gels on Oxidative Damage in Short-Term Passive Smoking Mice

Passive smoking is extensively studied because of its harmfulness to human health. In this study, the effects of fermented green tea waste extract gels (GTEG) on oxidative damage in mice exposed to short-term cigarette smoke (CS) were investigated. The GTEG is prepared from green tea waste extract and microbial transglutaminase (MTGase). The lung injury model of mice was established through passive smoking for 5 days. The experimental results revealed the following findings. (1) The GTEG induced by MTGase has obvious gel properties; (2) GTEG has strong biological activity and antioxidant properties in vitro; (3) The passive smoking model was established successfully; specifically, the lung tissue of the model mice exhibited inflammatory symptoms, oxidative stress response appeared in their bodies, and their inflammatory indicators increased; (4) Compared with the passive smoking model group, the mice, which were exposed to CS and received GTEG treatment, exhibited increased food intake and body weight; increased total superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity in serum; significant decreases (p < 0.05) in the content levels of the inflammatory factors malondialdehyde, interleukin (IL)-6, and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α); and inhibited expression of IL-6, IL-33, TNF-α, and IL-1β inflammatory genes. The results indicated that taking GTEG can relieve the oxidative stress injury of mice caused by short-term CS and has antioxidant properties.
