Abstract
PurposeThis paper explores the effect the regional technological environment has on technology-driven performance, measured by enterprise resource planning (ERP).Design/methodology/approachThis study specifies a productivity-based production function driven by ERP system adoption. Employing a quasi-experimental research design, the author disentangles two effects – the average effect of ERP adoption and the moderation effect of the regional technological environment. The novelty of this study is that it merges publicly available information retrieved via text-mining tools and official financial reports published by companies.FindingsThe total effect of technology adoption on productivity varies from almost 3%–9% in different technological environments. Moreover, this study’s results revealed that the regional technological environment could enhance the effect of adopting different ERP systems.Originality/valueWhile some papers investigate the relationship between ERP adoption and firm performance regarding the environmental context of a firm, the effect of the regional technological environment on the relationship between technology adoption and firm performance is understudied. Thus, this research tries to contribute to a deeper understanding of the regional context's impact on technology-driven performance. The authors used automated content analysis to collect data on technology adoption; by doing so, this study contributes to the growing body of research utilising the text-mining approach to extract data stored in Internet-based information sources.

How academic researchers select collaborative research projects: a choice experiment. JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER 2020. Abstract
AbstractAlthough many studies have been conducted on the drivers of and barriers to research collaborations, current literature provides limited insights into the ways in which individual researchers choose to engage in different collaborative projects. Using a choice experiment, we studied the factors that drive this choice using a representative sample of 3145 researchers from Western Europe and North America who publish in English. We find that for most researchers, the expected publication of research in scientific journals deriving from a project is the most decisive factor driving their collaboration choices. Moreover, most respondents prefer to collaborate with other partners than industry. However, different factors’ influence varies across groups of researchers. These groups are characterised as going for the ‘puzzle’ (60% of the sample), the ‘ribbon’ (33%) or the ‘gold’ (8%), i.e., primarily oriented toward intellectual goals, recognition or money, respectively. This heterogeneity shows that a combination of interventions will be required for governments aiming to promote university–industry collaborations.

Abstract
It is widely accepted that the first firm to deploy the latest technology will enjoy monopoly profits. However, research shows that the first mover advantage is quickly eroded by late movers. Technology deployments by late movers remain largely under-explored. This study explores the impact of the technological and market capabilities of late movers on their deployment timing, and how this impact is moderated by the pace of frontier advancement. We find a positive association between a firm’s capabilities and the earliness of its deployment timing. A faster pace of frontier advancement exacerbates the impact of a firm’s capabilities on technology deployment timing. We draw empirical evidence from the thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) industry between 1995 and 2010. This paper contributes to the technology management literature by developing a deeper understanding of the trade-offs involved in the timing of technology deployments.
