Development and validation of the questionnaire to analyze the communication of nurses in nurse-patient therapeutic communication

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to develop and analyze the psychometric properties of an instrument that could analyze the communication of nursing professionals in nurse-patient therapeutic communication.

METHODS

A literature review and a panel of experts were used (N = 10) to develop the questionnaire to analyze the communication of nurses in nurse-patient therapeutic communication. The final version of the questionnaire was composed of 49 items and applied to a convenience sample of 370 nurses.

RESULTS

The construct validity was assessed by an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and the reliability using Cronbach's Alpha. Three dimensions were identified that determine therapeutic communication: professional, contextual and/or situational and patient. The Cronbach's α total coefficient was 0.90, ranging from 0.71 to 0.81 for the dimensions.

CONCLUSION

The questionnaire to analyze the communication of nurses in nurse-patient therapeutic communication represents a valid and reliable questionnaire to measure nurses' communication with patients in the clinical setting.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

The use of the questionnaire enables the analysis of elements that interfere with effective communication. This can assist in developing interventions to improve nurses' therapeutic communication with patients.

NURSING WORK: NURSES AND USERS’ POINT OF VIEW

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the perception of users and nurses about nursing work. Method: a descriptive exploratory qualitative research in a clinic inpatient unit of a public hospital and in a Family Health Center, in the city of Punta Arenas, Chile. For data collection, we worked with a semi-structured interview, and analysis of the information was carried out guided by thematic content analysis. Thirty-five users and sixteen nurses participated; data collection took place between September and December 2018. Results: the results were organized according to the perception of nurses and users into four thematic categories Nursing as a profession of human care; Nursing and its role in administration/management; Nursing as a profession with educational role; Nursing as a health profession. In the case of users, nursing qualification as heavy and arduous work also emerged. Conclusion: nurses and users consider nursing as a health profession that deals with human care, which involves not only healing, but also dimensions of health education and management of material and human resources, which is based on science and requires academic training for proper development at different levels of care.

Habilidades sociales de comunicación en el cuidado humanizado de enfermería: Un diagnóstico para una intervención socioeducativa

RESUMEN Objetivo Evaluar las habilidades sociales necesarias para la comunicación en el cuidado humanizado de enfermería. Método Estudio con enfoque cuantitativo, descriptivo y transversal realizado de noviembre del 2018 a enero del 2019 en un hospital público de San Luis Potosí, México. La recolección fue con 30 pacientes hospitalizados y 30 enfermeras de hospitalización utilizando 3 instrumentos: CECOP (Comportamientos sobre la forma de comunicación observado por pacientes), ACEP (Autoevaluación sobre la forma de comunicación por personal de enfermería) y tercero una Evaluación de conocimientos de cuidado humanizado, se analizó con estadística descriptiva. Resultados El 60% de enfermería obtuvo en nivel medio en empatía y comunicación, y el 63.3% de pacientes percibe nivel alto. Al evaluar el respeto, comprensión y amabilidad en las escalas análogas se encontró que el promedio de clasificación varió de 8.73 a 9.03 en una escala de 0 a 10. el .97.4% de los pacientes desean ser comprendidos y atendidos. En conocimientos el 67% de enfermeras obtuvo nivel bajo Conclusiones e Implicaciones para la práctica El estudio permitió identificar las habilidades sociales necesarias que el profesional de enfermería requiere fortalecer para la comunicación efectiva. Los resultados son pieza clave para diseñar la Intervención socioeducativa.

Rotación y desempeño laboral de los profesionales de enfermería en un instituto especializado

Introducción: La rotación de personal constituye una parte importante de la gestión de recursos humanos y, por ende, debe considerar sus efectos directos o indirectos sobre el desempeño laboral. Objetivo: Determinar la relación entre rotación y desempeño laboral de los profesionales de enfermería en un instituto especializado en oftalmología. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio correlacional, prospectivo, de corte transversal. Se aplicó muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia, haciendo un total de 29 enfermeras participantes del estudio. Para medir la variable rotación se elaboró un instrumento de 24 preguntas, dividido en cuatro dimensiones, con un índice de confiabilidad de 0.72. Asimismo, para la evaluación de desempeño, se utilizó un instrumento de 21 preguntas, dividido en 6 dimensiones, con un índice de confiablidad de 0.86. Resultados: 93.1% fueron mujeres; 34.5% con edad entre 41 y 50 años; 62.0% con estado civil casadas, 75.9% con condición laboral nombradas. Resultados generales de rotación: 58.6% indiferente, 20.7% adecuada y 20.7% no adecuada. Resultado final del desempeño laboral: 55.2% moderado, 27.6% bajo y 17.2% alto. El resultado de correlación según Pearson (p-valor= 0.511). Discusión: La rotación sucede cuando falta personal en determinado servicio, sin considerar el entorno familiar del trabajador, no contempla incentivo económico y es percibida por las enfermeras como generador de crecimiento profesional. La evaluación del desempeño laboral estriba en la subjetividad de los evaluadores. Conclusiones: No se encontró relación significativa entre rotación y desempeño laboral.Como citar este artículo: Campos PIA, Gutiérrez HC, Matzumura JPK. Communication skills in ICU and adult hospitalisation unit nursing staff

OBJECTIVES

In this study researchers are trying to analyse the personality factors related to social skills in nurses who work in: Intensive Care Units, ICU, and Hospitalisation units. Both groups are from the Madrid Health Service (SERMAS).

METHOD

The present investigation has been developed as a descriptive transversal study, where personality factors in ICU nurses (n=29) and those from Hospitalisation units (n=40) were compared. The 16PF-5 questionnaire was employed to measure the personality factors associated with communication skills.

RESULTS

The comparison of the personality factors associated to social skills, communication, in both groups, show us that nurses from ICU obtain in social receptivity: 5,6 (A+), 5,2 (C-), 6,2 (O+), 5,1 (H-), 5,3 (Q1-), and emotional control: 6,1 (B+), 5,9 (N+). Meanwhile the data doesn't adjust to the expected to emotional and social expressiveness, emotional receptivity and social control, there are not evidence.

CONCLUSIONS

The personality factors associated to communication skills in ICU nurses are below those of hospitalisation unit nurses. The present results suggest the necessity to develop training actions, focusing on nurses from intensive care units to improve their communication social skills.
