Impact of World Cerebral Palsy Day on Public Interest in Brazil: Evidence from Internet Search Data

AIM

This study investigated the impact of the World Cerebral Palsy Day (WCPD) campaign on the public interest using Google Trends Analysis data in Brazil.

METHODS

Google Trends was used to collect Relative Search Volume (RSV) data for "cerebral palsy" from 2004 to 2011 (control years) and 2012 to 2022 (WCPD years). RSV during the 4 weeks around WCPD (period of interest) was compared with the rest of the year (control period) in each timeframe. Regional RSV, search queries, and main topics were also investigated.

RESULTS

RSV increased by 62.22% from pre-campaign to campaign period. During the WCPD years, a 21.36% RSV increase occurred in campaign weeks, with an average difference of 12.16 (95% CI: 1.74, 22.58); notably in in the last five years in the southeast 9.47 (95% CI: 2.93, 16.01) and south 8.66 (95% CI: 1.66, 15.66) macro-regions.

CONCLUSION

The campaign has fulfilled its role, but targeting more vulnerable areas could further amplify its impact.

The Impact of Cerebral Visual Impairment on Social Skills and Sensory Processing

Limited evidence exists on the impact of cerebral visual impairment (CVI) on developmental domains in toddlers. This study investigated whether CVI influences social skills and sensory processing in toddlers with cerebral palsy (CP). The study included toddlers with CP, with or without CVI, and typically developing (TD) toddlers. All parents completed the demographic information form. Social skills were assessed by the Brief Infant-Toddler Social and Emotional Assessment (BITSEA). Sensory processing was evaluated by the Infant/Toddler Sensory Profile (ITSP). Analysis of covariance was employed to assess the disparity in BITSEA and ITSP scores. Toddlers with CP and CVI group demonstrated lower social competence than the other groups (p < .05). Having CVI did not cause a statistically significant difference in sensory processing among toddlers with CP (p > .05). CVI significantly affects social competence in toddlers with CP but does not affect sensory processing.

Influence of family strength on life satisfaction of individuals who have a sibling with disability: Mediating effect of disability acceptance

This descriptive correlational study was conducted to examine the mediating effect of disability acceptance on the relationship between family strength and life satisfaction in individuals who have a sibling with a disability. The responses of 144 non-disabled siblings of persons with a disability were analyzed using panel data from the Korea Institute for Persons with Disabilities, and a regression analysis was performed. Family strength and acceptance of disabilities significantly affected the life satisfaction of siblings without disability. Regarding the effect of family strength on life satisfaction, acceptance of a sibling's disability by siblings without disability had a significant mediating effect. Our results suggest that strategies to enhance the acceptance of disabilities and promote family strength are necessary to improve the life satisfaction of individuals without disability as well as their siblings with disabilities. Family-centered interventions are warranted to promote positive acceptance of disabilities.

Pediatric dysphagia overview: best practice recommendation study by multidisciplinary experts

BACKGROUND

Currently, there is no comprehensive and multidisciplinary recommendation study covering all aspects of pediatric dysphagia (PD). This study aimed to generate PD management recommendations with methods that can be used in clinical practice to fill this gap in our country and in the world, from the perspective of experienced multidisciplinary experts.

METHODS

This recommendation paper was generated by a multidisciplinary team, using the seven-step process and a three-round modified Delphi survey via e-mail. First, ten open-ended questions were created, and then detailed recommendations including management, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up were created with the answers from these questions. Each recommendation item was voted on by the experts as overall consensus (strong recommendation), approaching consensus (weak recommendation) and divergent consensus (not recommended).

RESULTS

In the 1st Delphi round, a questionnaire of 414 items was prepared based on the experts' responses to ten open-ended questions. In the 2nd Delphi round, 59.2% of these items were accepted as pre-recommendation. In the 3rd Delphi round, 62.6% of 246 items were accepted for inclusion in the proposals. The final version recommendations consisted of 154 items.

CONCLUSIONS

This study includes comprehensive and detailed answers for every problem that could be posed in clinical practice for the management of PD, and recommendations are for all pediatric patients with both oropharyngeal and esophageal dysphagia.

Modeling linkages between self-efficacy, normalization, and well-being factors among Israeli mothers of children with neurodevelopmental disorders

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Parents' well-being may be challenged by the neurodevelopmental disorders (NDs) of their children. This study explored general self-efficacy (personal resource) and normalization (coping strategy) and their possible association with mothers' well-being (satisfaction with life/SWL, positive affect, and presence of meaning in life/P-MIL).

METHOD

Data were obtained from 127 Israeli mothers, ages 23-63, of children (M = 12.08, SD = 3.39) with NDs (autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, cerebral palsy). All participants completed online self-report questionnaires.

RESULTS

After controlling for the effects of group, mother's age, and child's gender, bivariate associations showed that general self-efficacy was positively correlated with SWL (r =.46, p <.001), positive affect (r =.43, p <.001), and P-MIL (r =.37, p <.001). The study's mediation model was partly supported: General self-efficacy was related to normalization, which was related to SWL and positive affect, but not to P-MIL.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

This study contributes to the empirical knowledge on well-being in mothers raising children with NDs. Findings revealed that mothers' general self-efficacy alongside their strategy to adopt normalcy substantially contributed to their well-being. Hence, psychosocial services should strengthen general self-efficacy in this cohort and support their normalization efforts.

Factors Affecting Family Management Among Chinese Parents of Children With Leukemia: A Multisite Study

BACKGROUND

Effective family management can improve the ability of children's families to cope with the disease. However, the family management styles of children with leukemia are unknown.

OBJECTIVE

This study used a family management style framework and structural equation model to determine the direct and indirect predictors of family management of children with leukemia.

METHODS

A total of 496 parents of children with leukemia completed the Family Management Measure, the Feetham Family Functioning Survey, the Social Support Rating Scale, and a demographic family information form. We used structural equation modeling to explore the direct and indirect effects of the study variables on family management styles.

RESULTS

Family functioning, family income, parental education level, and geographic location affect family management directly, among which family functioning has the most significant coefficient in the model (0.53). Siblings and social support can affect family management through the mediating effect of family functioning. Employment change can directly affect family management (-0.27) and indirectly affect family functioning (-0.08).

CONCLUSIONS

Our results support the family management style framework. Individual and family factors such as family income, parental education level, geographic location, employment change, siblings, and social support contribute to the ease or difficulty of family management. In addition, family functioning can also mediate between contextual influences and family management styles.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Family functioning plays a vital role in relationships between contextual influences and family management. We can construct family management interventions according to family management influencing factors.

Psychosocial outcomes 1-year post total pancreatectomy and autologous islet cell transplant

BACKGROUND

A paucity of research regarding the psychosocial outcomes after TPIAT exists.

METHODS

Adults (>18 years), adolescents (13-18 years), and children (5-12 years) with their parents were administered questionnaires at the time of evaluation for TPIAT and 1-year postsurgery to assess psychosocial outcomes.

RESULTS

A total of 13 adults (6 male, 46%; mean age 35.2 years) and 9 children/adolescents (4 female, 44.4%; mean age 11.78 years) with CP were included in the study. A total of 69.2% of the adults and 66.7% of the children and adolescents were insulin dependent at 1-year postsurgery. In adults, improvements on the SF-36 pain (p = .001) and general health (p = .045) subscales were generally observed 1-year postsurgery. Adult patients who underwent robotic-assisted surgery compared to open surgery specifically reported better general health on the SF-36 (p < .05) at 1 year. For children and adolescents, reductions in average pain in the last week (p < .05), pain interference (p < .001), and fatigue were observed (p < .05) at 1-year postsurgery. For the entire sample, using repeated measures ANOVA and covarying for age, significant differences were found 1-year postsurgery in average pain in the last week (p = .034) and pain interference with the following categories: general activity (p < .001), walking (p = .04), normal work (p = .003), sleep (p = .002), and enjoyment in life (p = .007).

CONCLUSIONS

While few transplant centers offer this treatment, the improvement in quality of life suggests this may be a viable treatment option for those with CP complicated by intractable pain. (IRB Approval PRO 19080302).
