Challenges and support needs of parents of children with developmental disabilities (DD) in Accra, Ghana

Education and healthcare services for children and young people with intellectual disability in Vietnam: an ecological systems analysis

PURPOSE

This paper examines the current state of services and support for children and young people with intellectual disability in Vietnam through the perspectives and experiences of parents and professionals in the education and health systems.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

We undertook 24 semi-structured interviews with parents and professionals from two Vietnamese central provinces to ask about their experiences and support needs. We draw on the networked model of ecological systems to identify contextual factors in the micro-, meso-, exo- and macro-systems.

RESULTS

Access to education and healthcare services were found to be limited for children, young people, and families in central Vietnam. Barriers to provision, accessibility and quality of services were identified at multiple intersecting levels and systems. Parents reported high needs for formal services provided by trained professionals as well as information and education for themselves to provide optimum support for their children. For professionals, further training and government investment and oversight are needed to improve access and ensure quality of services.

CONCLUSIONS

Services and support in education and healthcare for children and young people with intellectual disability and their families remains lacking and needs significant improvement. Further information and support for parents, capacity building for professionals, strengthened disability policies and regulations, and public awareness are required.

Psychosocial impacts of caring for a child with a genetic disorder in Accra, Ghana

Caregivers caring for a child with a genetic condition may experience psychosocial distress, which may be compounded by the context in which the caring takes place. Few studies have examined psychosocial distress and support among caregivers caring for a child with a genetic disorder in low-middle-income countries such as Ghana. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the psychosocial impacts of caring for a child with a genetic disorder in an urban setting in Ghana's capital, Accra. We conducted individual interviews among 17 caregivers who were taking care of children with various genetic disorders including, albinism, Edward's syndrome, osteogenesis imperfecta, sickle cell disease, and spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. Thematic analysis of the data revealed three main themes on the psychosocial impacts, including: (1) self-blame, guilt, and shame; (2) sleep and mood disturbances; and (3) discrimination and stigmatization. We observed three themes about support: (1) psychological support; (2) family and community support; and (3) institutional support. Participants reported limited support from professionals such as psychologists. Discussion focuses on the supportive care needs of caregivers and implications for genetic counselling awareness, advocacy, and training.

Developmental disabilities in Africa: A scientometric review

BACKGROUND

Developmental disabilities are disproportionately more investigated in higher-income countries. However, global prevalence of developmental disabilities indicate that a large proportion of individuals with disabilities reside in low- and middle-income nations.

AIMS

The present work therefore aims to conduct a scientometric review to survey available literature on developmental disabilities in low- and middle-income countries belonging to the continent of Africa.

METHODS AND PROCEDURES

A literature search was conducted on Scopus, where a total of 1720 relevant publications (and an accompanying 66 thousand references) were found, representing research conducted between 1950 to 2022. Then, document co-citation analysis was performed to chart significant co-citation relationships between relevant articles and their cited references.

OUTCOMES AND RESULTS

The generated network based on document co-citation analysis revealed a total of 14 distinct thematic research clusters and 12 significant documents that have been frequently cited in the literature on developmental disabilities in Africa.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

The scientometric review revealed a trend of broadening research towards systems of care, away from a medical model of disease. It is projected that future research will continue to capitalise on inter-disciplinary strengths to arrive at a more nuanced understanding of developmental disability from all levels - individuals, families, to communities.

Experiences of parents and stakeholders in caring for, and supporting children with special needs in Ghana

We studied the caring, parenting, and support services for children with special needs in Ghana. Many of the study participants reported re-adjusting their lives in virtually every domain-social, economic, and emotional to deal with and manage the new realities. How parents navigate this space varied considerably from setting to setting. Regardless of individual and interpersonal resources, community, institutional, and policy circumstances seemed to exacerbate notions of disability. In many instances, parents had a low depth of suspicion about the precursors to disabling events in their children. Parents are constantly pursuing health care, including a cure for their children with disabilities. Views about "otherness" were noted, and these tended to undermine medical interpretations/explanations of disability generally, which in turn affected formal education and health-seeking for children. Institutional arrangements exist to encourage parents to invest in their children regardless of their perceived abilities. However, these do not seem to be sufficient, particularly for health and formal education. Programming and policy implications are highlighted.
