Abstract
BACKGROUND Lameness is a significant problem for the dairy industry worldwide. No previous studies have evaluated the prevalence of lameness or digital dermatitis (DD) in dairy cattle herds in Egypt. A total of 16,098 dairy cows from 55 dairy herds in 11 Egyptian governorates underwent visual locomotion scoring using a 4-point scoring system. Cows that had a lameness score ≥ 2 were considered clinically lame. Following manure removal with water and using a flashlight, the cows' hind feet were examined in the milking parlour to identify DD lesions and classify with M-score. Furthermore, each cow was assigned a hock score (a 3-point scale) and a hygiene score (a 4-point scale). The cow-, within-and between-herd prevalence of lameness and DD and associated 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. The prevalence of hock lesions and poor cow hygiene was also calculated. RESULTS Of the examined cows, 6,883 were found to be clinically lame (42.8%, 95% CI = 42.0-43.5%). The average within-herd prevalence of lameness was 43.1% (95% CI = 35.9-50.3%). None of the dairy herds recruited into the study were found to be free from clinical lameness. The average within-herd prevalence of DD was 6.4% (95% CI = 4.9-8.0%). The herd-level prevalence of DD was 92.7% (95% CI = 85.9-99.6%). Active DD lesions (M1, M2, M4.1) were identified in 464 cows (2.9%) while inactive lesions (M3, M4) were identified in 559 cows (3.5%). The within-herd prevalence of hock lesions (score 2 or 3) was 12.6% (95% CI = 4.03-21.1%) while a severe hock lesion had within-herd prevalence of 0.31% (95% CI = 0.12-0.51%). Cow-level prevalence of hock lesions was 6.2% (n = 847, 95% CI = 5.8-6.2%). The majority of examined cows had a hygiene score of 4 (n = 10,814, prevalence = 70.3%, 95% CI = 69.5-71%). CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of lameness was higher than prevalence estimates reported for other countries which could be due to differing management and/or environmental factors. DD was identified at lower prevalence in most herds but with high herd-level prevalence. Poor cow hygiene was notable in most herds. Measures to reduce the prevalence of lameness and to improve cow hygiene in dairy cattle herds in Egypt are therefore needed.

Abstract
Our aims were to (1) determine how interdigital skin temperature (IST), measured using infrared thermography, was associated with different stages of digital dermatitis (DD) lesions and (2) develop and validate models that can use IST measurements to identify cows with an active DD lesion. Between March 2019 and March 2020, infrared thermographic images of hind feet were taken from 2,334 Holstein cows across 4 farms. We recorded the maximum temperature reading from infrared thermographic images of the interdigital skin between the heel bulbs on the hind feet. Pregnant animals were enrolled approximately 1 to 2 mo precalving, reassessed 1 wk after calving, and again at approximately 50 to 100 d postpartum. At these time points, IST and the clinical stage of DD (M-stage scoring system: M1-M4.1) were recorded in addition to other data such as the ambient environmental temperature, height, body condition score, parity, and the presence of other foot lesions. A mixed effect linear regression model with IST as the dependent variable was fitted. Interdigital skin temperature was associated with DD lesions; compared to healthy feet, IST was highest in feet with M2 lesions, followed by M1 and M4.1 lesions. Subsequently, the capacity of IST measurements to detect the presence or absence of an active DD lesion (M1, M2, or M4.1) was explored by fitting logistic regression models, which were tested using 10-fold validation. A mixed effect logistic regression model with the presence of active DD as the dependent variable was fitted first. The average area under the curve for this model was 0.80 when its ability to detect presence of active DD was tested on 10% of the data that were not used for the model's training; an average sensitivity of 0.77 and an average specificity of 0.67 was achieved. This model was then restricted so that only explanatory variables that could be practically recorded in a nonresearch, external setting were included. Validation of this model demonstrated an average area under the curve of 0.78, a sensitivity of 0.88, and a specificity of 0.66 for 1 of the time points (precalving). Lower sensitivity and specificity were achieved for the other 2 time points. Our study adds further evidence to the relationship between DD and foot skin temperature using a large data set with multiple measurements per animal. Additionally, we highlight the potential for infrared thermography to be used for routine on-farm diagnosis of active DD lesions.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess whether an antibody ELISA applied to bulk tank milk (BTM) could be used to accurately estimate within-herd prevalence of digital dermatitis (DD). The ELISA was designed for the detection of antibodies against Treponema phagedenis-like strain V1 (PrrA antigen). The hind feet of all lactating cows from 40 commercial French dairy herds with a history of DD were scored by an observer in the milking parlor, using the 4 M-stage system. After milking, a BTM sample was collected and tested for anti-Treponema phagedenis-like antibodies using the antibody ELISA. Within-herd DD prevalence at the cow level was determined using 2 different approaches: (1) having DD lesion on at least 1 hind foot (Prev; prevalence of affected cows), and (2) having an M1 or M2 lesion on at least 1 hind foot (PrevA; prevalence of cows affected by DD in an active stage). Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to determine both optimal within-herd DD prevalence and BTM sample to positive (S/P) ratio cut-off values. Two optimal cut-off values were identified. Herds with an S/P ratio of BTM ≤0.2 had a Prev ≤10% (sensitivity = 0.97, specificity = 1), whereas herds with an S/P ratio of BTM >0.38 had a Prev >40% (sensitivity = 0.94, specificity = 0.86). In the same way but with a slightly lower specificity, an S/P ratio >0.38 corresponds also to a PrevA >18% (sensitivity = 0.92, specificity = 0.70). The BTM antibody ELISA shows great promise for screening purposes during DD management programs.

Abstract
Claw lesions have a multifactorial origin and may affect sow welfare and farm profitability. However, estimating the precise impact is hampered by several factors that interfere with the accuracy of claw lesion assessment. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of observer, scoring condition and claw cleanliness on claw lesion scoring in sows. The first experiment evaluated the impact of observer by calculating the inter- and intra-observer reliability during three test sessions using photographs. The second experiment evaluated the impact of observer, scoring condition (Feet First© chute of Zinpro Corp., "sow chute" vs. Mobile Claw Scoring Device, "MCSD"), and claw cleanliness (clean or soiled claws) on claw lesion scoring. For this experiment, 20 hybrid mid-gestating sows were hoisted up using the sow chute in which the MCSD was positioned. Lateral and medial claw digits of both hind claws were scored for heel horn erosion and separations along the heel/sole junction and white line. Scores were given by drawing a vertical bar on a 160 mm tagged visual analogue scale (tVAS); the severity of a claw lesion type was determined by measuring the distance from 0 mm. Four scores per sow were collected and analysed: clean claws × MCSD video recordings, soiled claws × MCSD video recordings, clean claws × visual scoring in a sow chute, and soiled claws × visual scoring in a sow chute. In both experiments, observer had an impact on the claw lesion scores. The inter-observer reliability was highest for overgrown dewclaws and lowest for the horizontal wall cracks (0.84 and 0.35, resp.). The highest intra-observer reliability was found for overgrown dewclaws and heel horn erosion (0.89) and lowest for vertical wall cracks (0.64). Furthermore, scoring condition and claw cleanliness influenced the scores in the second experiment and the limits of agreements were high (23.5-58.9 mm). The improved concordance correlation coefficient (iCCC) was highest for the heel horn erosion scores. In conclusion, the impact of observer seemed less relevant for claw lesion scoring; however, claw cleanliness and scoring condition were important and cannot be used interchangeably.

Abstract
Visual assessment in the milking parlour is a commonly used method to determine the prevalence and severity of bovine digital dermatitis (BDD). It is generally suggested that cows' feet are washed prior to examination to maximise the sensitivity of the assessment, but concern has been expressed that washing cows' feet could contaminate the teats and lead to intramammary infection. Furthermore, the evidence for washing cows' feet is equivocal, as some studies have reported similar sensitivities for detecting BDD without washing as that reported by studies which used washing. Furthermore most of these studies have used data from housed cattle. The findings from these studies may not be applicable to cattle at pasture where feet are often contaminated with mud rather than faeces and lesions may be smaller and less severe. The aim of this study was to compare, in cattle at pasture, the sensitivities of BDD examinations before and after washing. Two herds known to have BDD were enrolled and approximately half of each herd was screened for BDD by examining the cows' hind feet before and after washing. The sensitivities of these examinations were estimated using a Bayesian superpopulation approach, and were found to be 0.34 (95% credible interval [CrI]: 0.088-0.69) and 0.63 (95%CrI: 0.46-0.78) for pre- and post-washing, respectively. There was a 93.95% probability that the sensitivity of examination post-washing was greater than that pre-washing. These results suggest that in pasture-based herds, many BDD lesions will be missed if cattle are examined without their feet being washed.

Abstract
Digital dermatitis (DD) is the most common infectious foot lesion affecting welfare and productivity of dairy cattle. The key to DD control programs is routine and frequent identification of DD lesions. The objective was to evaluate accuracy of detecting and scoring DD lesions in 3 milking parlor designs and in 3 alternative settings compared with scoring in the hoof trimming chute as reference. A total of 552 cows and 1,104 hind feet from 17 freestall farms were scored by 1 observer in the milking parlor and in 1 other setting: pen, headlocks, or management rail. After being scored in the milking parlor and at least 1 other setting, cows were examined in the hoof trimming chute, considered the gold standard. In every setting, all hind feet were inspected visually using a flashlight and without prior washing of feet. Agreement of the scoring settings was assessed using the 5 M-stage scoring system and a dichotomous absence (M0 or M0/M1) or presence (M1 to M4.1 or M2 to M4.1) system. At trimming chute inspection, 44% of feet had a DD lesion, with estimates of 11, 5, 2, 10, and 16% for M1, M2, M3, M4, and M4.1 lesions, respectively. Apparent DD foot-level prevalence at the milking parlor, pen, management rail, and headlocks was 28, 22, 16, and 22%, respectively. M-stages were less discernible in the pen, management rail, and headlocks (apparent prevalence of M1, M2, M3, and M4.1 was ≤1%) compared with the trimming chute and milking parlor. Agreement beyond chance between any scoring setting and trimming chute scoring ranged from 0.48 to 0.70 for the dichotomous scoring system (absence = M0/M1 vs. presence = M2 to M4.1). Diagnostic test performance varied greatly among DD scoring settings but, in general, it had low sensitivity (<70%) and high specificity (>93%) for detecting any DD lesion. Agreement and test characteristics were not affected by the type of milking parlor. Although the milking parlor and headlocks were the most reliable settings in which to detect DD, none of the settings were reliable enough to replace inspection of feet in the trimming chute. However, scoring the presence or absence of DD in the milking parlor, pen, management rail, and headlocks could be used to estimate within-herd DD prevalence, to improve DD surveillance through routine monitoring, and to evaluate effects of interventions at the farm level.
