A simple and efficient anionic chromogenic chemosensor based on 2,4-dinitrodiphenylamine in dimethyl sulfoxide and in dimethyl sulfoxide-water mixtures

A chromo-fluorogenic HMT sensor for Ag+ and the resultant HMT-Ag complex turn-off probe for F- in DMSO: experimental and theoretical studies

The photophysical properties of Hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) were investigated through physical methods and spectroscopically in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) at ambient temperature. Evidently, HMT turned out as a sensor, selective and sensitive to silver ion (Ag⁺) only, among other cations, through colorimetric and fluorometric activities (observable by naked eye) and spectrally, both by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The resulting complex pedant (HMT-Ag) is highly responsive to the presence of fluoride ion (F⁻) in aqueous soluble DMSO, evidenced by changes in absorption spectra as well as fluorescence quenching, upon addition of the respective ions. Consequently, spectral changes induced by the addition of these ions, were consistently concomitant with colour changes, from colourless to light brown (HMT-Ag) to dark brown (HMT-Ag-F) in daylight condition, while bright light blue colour (HMT) to dark blue brownish (HMT-Ag) under UV-light conditions. The experimental results were complimented by theoretical studies, which are well within agreement of one another.

Spectrometric and kinetics studies involving anionic chromogenic chemodosimeters based on silylated imines in acetonitrile or acetonitrile–water mixtures

The nucleophilic attack of F⁻ or CN⁻ on the silicon center of chemodosimeters, through an S_N2@Si mechanism, released colored phenolates as leaving groups. NMR, PGSE NMR, and UV-vis studies provided evidence on the mechanism of the reactions.

A novel strategy for chromogenic chemosensors highly selective toward cyanide based on its reaction with 4-(2,4-dinitrobenzylideneamino)benzenes or 2,4-dinitrostilbenes

N-(2,4-dinitrobenzylidene)-4-methoxyaniline (1), 4-(N,N-dimethylamine)-N-(2,4-dinitrobenzylidene)aniline (2), 2,4-dinitro-4'-methoxystilbene (3), and 2,4-dinitro-4'-(dimethylamino)stilbene (4) were synthesized and studied in dimethyl sulfoxide in a novel strategy as anionic chromogenic chemosensors. The color of the solutions of these compounds changed only in the presence of cyanide. The kinetic studies were performed with compounds 1-3 in an excess of cyanide. Higher second-order rate constant values were obtained for the compounds containing a methoxy group in relation to the compounds with a dimethylamino substituent, since the methoxy group donates electronic density to the 2,4-dinitrophenyl electron-accepting group less easily compared with the dimethylamino group. Stilbenes generally have greater structural rigidity than imines, facilitating the action of the substituents through the mesomeric effect. The data obtained indicate that the anion acts as a nucleophile, being responsible for CN bond breaking. The CC bridge is not broken in the stilbene dyes, but cyanide performs a nucleophilic attack on the 2,4-dinitrophenyl group.

A newly synthesized thiazole derivative as a fluoride ion chemosensor: naked-eye, spectroscopic, electrochemical and NMR studies

2,3-Indoledione 3-thiosemicarbazone (TSCI) and a novel compound 3-(2-(4-(4-phenoxyphenyl)thiazol-2-yl)hydrazono)indolin-2-one (FTHI) were synthesized with high yield and characterized by spectroscopic techniques. The complexation behaviors of TSCI and FTHI for various anionic species (F(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), NO2(-), NO3(-), BzO(-), HSO4(-), ClO4(-)) in CH3CN were investigated and compared by UV-vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and (1)H NMR titration techniques. FTHI showed high degree of selectivity for fluoride over other anions. This selectivity could be easily observed by the naked eye, indicating that FTHI is potential colorimetric sensor for fluoride anion.

Interaction of protonated merocyanine dyes with amines in organic solvents

2,6-Diphenyl-4-(2,4,6-triphenylpyridinium-1-yl)phenolate (1a) and 4-[(1-methyl-4(1H)-pyridinylidene)-ethylidene]-2,5-cyclohexadien-1-one (2a) were protonated in organic solvents (dichloromethane, acetonitrile, and DMSO) to form 1b and 2b, respectively. The appearance of the solvatochromic bands of 1a and 2a was studied UV-vis spectrophotometrically by deprotonation of 1b and 2b in solution in the presence of the following amines: aniline (AN), N-methylaniline (NMAN), N,N-dimethylaniline (NDAN), n-butylamine (BA), diethylamine (DEA), and triethylamine (TEA). Titrations of 1b and 2b with the amines were carried out and the binding constants were determined from the titration curves in each solvent, using a mathematical model adapted from the literature which considers the simultaneous participation of two dye: amine stoichiometries, 1:1 and 1:2. The data obtained showed the following base order for the two compounds in DMSO: BA>DEA>TEA, while aromatic amines did not cause any effect. In dichloromethane, the following base order for 1b was verified: TEA>DEA>BA≫NDAN, while for 2b the order was: TEA>DEA>BA, suggesting that 1b is more acidic than 2b. The data in acetonitrile indicated for 1b and 2b the following order for the amines: DEA>TEA>BA. The diversity of the experimental data were explained based on a model that considers the level of interaction of the protonated dyes with the amines to be dependent on three aspects: (a) the basicity of the amine, which varies according to their molecular structure and the solvent in which it is dissolved, (b) the molecular structure of the dye, and (c) the solvent used to study the system.
