Synthesis, vibrational spectral and nonlinear optical studies of N-(4-hydroxy-phenyl)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde-imine: a combined experimental and theoretical investigation

Prediction of Photochromism of Salicylideneaniline Crystals Using a Data Mining Approach

Salicylideneanilines (SAs) are photochromic compounds that undergo enol-keto photoisomerization in the solid state. Research over the past 60 years has revealed empirically that SAs with steric and planar conformations tend to be photochromic and nonphotochromic, respectively. However, increasing counterexamples in the recent literature raise questions about the nature of the relationship between structure and photochromism in SA crystals and whether the photochromism of SA crystals is predictable. This study is the first to construct a data set on SA crystals and conduct a comprehensive analysis to investigate the relationship between molecular and crystal structures and photochromism. A data mining approach revealed that the dihedral angle is the most dominant structural parameter for photochromism, followed by the Hirshfeld surface volume. SAs with neutral bulky hydrocarbon groups, such as the tert-butyl group, tend to be photochromic because such SAs have steric conformation and a loosely packed structure. In contrast, SAs with fluorine, pyridine, and pyrazine are less likely to be photochromic due to their planar conformation and densely packed structures. The photochromism of the SA crystals in our data set was predicted with high accuracy (>85%) using machine learning. The results of this study provide a useful reference for designing SA crystals with desired photochromic properties.

Zwitterionic 1-{(1E)-[(4-hy-droxy-phen-yl)iminio]meth-yl}naphthalen-2-olate: crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis

The title zwitterion, C17H13NO2 (systematic name: 1-{(1E)-[(4-hy-droxy-phen-yl)iminium-yl]meth-yl}naphthalen-2-olate), features an intra-molecular charge-assisted N+-H⋯O- hydrogen bond. A twist in the mol-ecule is evident around the N-C(hy-droxy-benzene) bond [C-N-C-C torsion angle = 39.42 (8)°] and is reflected in the dihedral angle of 39.42 (8)° formed between the aromatic regions of the mol-ecule. In the crystal, zigzag supra-molecular chains along the a axis are formed by charge-assisted hy-droxy-O-H⋯O(phenoxide) hydrogen bonding. These are connected into a layer in the ab plane by charge-assisted hy-droxy-benzene-C-H⋯O(phenoxide) inter-actions and π-π contacts [inter-centroid distance between naphthyl-C6 rings = 3.4905 (12) Å]. Layers stack along the c axis with no specific inter-actions between them. The Hirshfeld surface analysis points to the significance C⋯H contacts between layers.

Synthesis, crystal structure and theoretical studies of a Schiff base 2-[4-hydroxy benzylidene]-amino naphthalene

The molecular structure of a new Schiff base, 2-[4-hydroxy benzylidene]-amino naphthalene (HBAN) has been examined by HF and B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) calculations. The X-ray structure was determined in order to establish the conformation of the molecule. The compound, C17H13NO, crystallizes in the orthorhombic, P212121 space group with the cell dimension, a=6.2867(2), b=10.2108(3), c=19.2950(6) Å, α=β=γ=90° and z=4. The asymmetric unit contains a molecule of a Schiff base. A strong intermolecular O-H⋯N and a weak C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds stabilized the crystal structure. The vibrational spectra of HBAN have been calculated using density functional theoretical computation and compared with the experimental. The study is extended to the HOMO-LUMO analysis to calculate the energy gap (Δ), Ionization potential (I), Electron Affinity (A), Global Hardness (η), Chemical Potential (μ) and Global Electrophilicity (w). The calculated HOMO and LUMO energy reveals that the charge transfer occurs within the molecule.

Experimental and theoretical study of antioxidative properties of some salicylaldehyde and vanillic Schiff bases

A set of ten phenolic Schiff bases was evaluated for their antioxidative properties. Two of them, one salicylaldehyde and one vanillic, showed high activity. Parameters obtained by DFT supported the experimental findings.

Ab initio/DFT calculations of butyl ammonium salt of O,O'-dibornyl dithiophosphate

O,O'-dibornyl dithiophosphete has been synthesized by the reaction of P2S5 and borneol in toluene. Fourier Transform Infrared spectra (FT-IR) of the title compound are measured. The molecular geometry, vibrational frequencies, infrared intensities and NMR spectrum of the title compound in the ground state have been calculated by using the density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio Hartree-Fock (HF) methods with the basis set of 6-31G(d). The computed bond lengths and bond angles show the good agreement with the experimental data. Moreover, the vibrational frequencies are calculated and the scaled values have been compared with experimental FT-IR spectra. Assignments of the vibrational modes are made on the basis of total energy distribution (TED) calculated with scaled quantum mechanical (SQM) method. The observed and calculated FT-IR and NMR spectra are in good agreement with each other.

Synthesis, crystal structure and ab initio/DFT calculations of a derivative of dithiophosphonates

The compound 2 has been synthesized from the reaction of 2,4-Bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3,2,4-dithiadiphosphetane-2,4-disulfide and (R)-1-[3,5-Bis(trifloromethyl)phenyl]ethanol in toluene. The obtained crude dithiophosphonic acid 1 has been treated with the excess of N(C2H5)3 to give rise to 2, [(+HN(C2H5)3][O-CH3CH-C6H3(CF3)2)(CH3OC6H4)PS2(-)]. The compound 2 has been characterized by using the spectroscopic methods such as IR, (1)H, (13)C, (31)P NMR and structural analysing method such as X-ray crystallography. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, whose space group is P212121. It consists of a dithiophosphonate bridged methoxyphenyl and bis(triflorophenylethyl) groups and a triethylammonium moiety linked by N-H⋯S and C-H⋯F hydrogen bonds. In the crystal structure, the C17H14F6O2PS2 molecule is elongated along the b-axis and stacked along the a-axis. The triethylammonium, N(CH2CH3)3, molecule fill in the cavities between the C17H14F6O2PS2 molecule. Moreover, ab initio methods based on Hartree-Fock (HF) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations with the basis set of 6-31G(d) are also carried out to determine the molecular structural properties and to calculate FT-IR and NMR spectrum of the compound 2. The experimental results and theoretical calculations have been compared, and they are found to be in good agreement.

Synthesis, structure and photoresponsive properties of 4-(3-fluorobenzylideneamino)antipyrine

Organic compounds are attracting greater attention largely in the recent years owing to their potential applications in the functional materials. Herein we reported the structural and photophysical properties of 4-(3-fluorobenzylideneamino)antipyrine. The studied molecule adopts a trans configuration about the imine bond, and forms a non-planar molecular device consisted of two effectively conjugated π-electron moieties. The stronger vibrational and nonlinear optical activities are tightly related to the molecular structural characteristics revealed by the analysis on vibrational modes and frontier molecular orbitals. The intramolecular electrons can be separated by the electron-transporting with specified photon-absorbing theoretically. The total molecular dipole moment, mean linear polarizability and first-order hyperpolarizability calculated at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level are 1.5390 Debye, 35.6075 Å(3) and 1.5391×10(-29) cm(5)/esu, respectively. The reported results indicate that the compound is a promising candidate of photoresponsive materials.

FT-IR, FT-Raman spectral and conformational studies on (E)-2-(2-hydroxybenzylidenamino)-3-(1H-indol-3yl) propionic acid

The (E)-2-(2-hydroxybenzylidenamino)-3-(1H-indol-3yl) propionic acid ((E)-2HBA3IPA) was synthesized. The theoretical conformational analysis was performed to identify the stable structure. Optimized molecular bond parameters were calculated by using B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) basis set. The hyperconjugative interaction energy (E(2)) and electron densities of donor (i) and acceptor (j) bonds were calculated using NBO analysis. First order hyperpolarizability (β0) was calculated. The band gap energy was analyzed by UV-Visible recorded spectra and compared with theoretical band gap TD-DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) values. The intra-molecular hydrogen bonding interaction was identified between nitrogen and hydroxyl hydrogen (N⋯H-O).

Synthesis, structure, photo-responsive properties of 4-(2-fluorobenzylideneamino)antipyrine: a combined experimental and theoretical study

In this work, 4-(2-fluorobenzylideneamino)antipyrine (FBIAAP) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, XRD, FT-IR, FT-Raman and UV-Vis techniques as well as density functional calculations. The studied molecule adopts a trans configuration about the imine CN bond, and adjacent molecules are linked through two kinds of weak hydrogen bonds to form supramolecular layered structures along the ab plane. Vibrational spectral analyses show that the benzene moiety directly attached to the central pyrazoline shows good vibrational isolation from the other moiety of pyrazole-imino-benzene presenting good vibrational resonances. UV-vis absorption bands mainly belong to n→π and π→π according to the electron transfer orbital assignments for the electron absorption spectrum of FBIAAP. The first-order hyperpolarizability of FBIAAP is 44.9 times that of urea theoretically. In addition, the thermodynamic properties were also obtained theoretically from the harmonic frequencies of the optimized structure.

Growth and characterization of anilinium hydrogen sulfate (AHS) single crystals: an organic nonlinear optical material

Single crystals of anilinium hydrogen sulfate (C(6)H(8)N(+)·HSO(4)(-), AHS) have been grown by slow evaporation solution growth technique using water as a solvent. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) study has been carried out to determine the lattice parameters. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and FT-Raman studies confirm the presence of various functional groups present in the grown crystal. The absorption spectrum of the titled crystal shows that the lower cut off wavelength lies at around 300 nm. The thermal analysis (TG/DTA and DSC) and Polarized light thermomicroscopy (PLTM) were carried out to find the thermal stability, melting point and phase transition of the title crystal. The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) property of the grown crystal has been confirmed by Kurtz-Perry powder technique. First static hyperpolarizability and molecular orbital calculations were carried out using Gaussian 03W program based on B3LYP/3-21G basis set.

Structural, proton-transfer, thermodynamic and nonlinear optical studies of (E)-2-((2-hydroxyphenyl)iminiomethyl)phenolate

Recently, the study of imine-bridged organics is interested in proton-transfer and photo-responsive material fields. Herein, we make a investigation on the structural, thermodynamic and nonlinear optical properties of (E)-2-((2-hydroxyphenyl)iminiomethyl)phenolate (HPIMP). The structural varieties of the studied compound are characterized by the X-ray single crystal diffraction and vibrational spectral techniques, as well as the vibrational spectral bands are precisely ascribed to the studied structure with the aid of DFT theoretical calculations. The experimental results of the FT-IR and X-ray measurements supply good proofs to reveal the proton-transfer procedures of HPIMP, and exhibit that the studied compound is a good proton-transfer model. In addition, the thermodynamic properties are obtained from the theoretical vibrations of the optimized HPIMP. The linear polarizability (α(0)) and first-order hyperpolarizabilities (β(0)) respectively present the values of 26.28 Å(3) and 7.41×10(-30) cm(5)/esu predicated theoretically by the DFT-B3lYP method at 6-31G(d) level, which indicates that the studied compound is a promising nonlinear optical material candidate.
