Abstract
Consumer awareness on the side effects of chemical preservatives has increased the demand for natural preservation technologies. An efficient and sustainable alternative to current conventional preservation techniques should guarantee food safety and retain its quality with minimal side effects. Photosensitization, utilizing light and a natural photosensitizer, has been postulated as a viable and green alternative to the current conventional preservation techniques. The potential of curcumin as a natural photosensitizer is reviewed in this paper as a practical guide to develop a safe and effective decontamination tool for industrial use. The fundamentals of the photosensitization mechanism are discussed, with the main emphasis on the natural photosensitizer, curcumin, and its application to inactivate microorganisms as well as to enhance the shelf life of foods. Photosensitization has shown promising results in inactivating a wide spectrum of microorganisms with no reported microbial resistance due to its particular lethal mode of targeting nucleic acids. Curcumin as a natural photosensitizer has recently been investigated and demonstrated efficacy in decontamination and delaying spoilage. Moreover, studies have shown the beneficial impact of an appropriate encapsulation technique to enhance the cellular uptake of photosensitizers, and therefore, the phototoxicity. Further studies relating to improved delivery of natural photosensitizers with inherent poor solubility should be conducted. Also, detailed studies on various food products are warranted to better understand the impact of encapsulation on curcumin photophysical properties, photo-driven release mechanism, and nutritional and organoleptic properties of treated foods.

Abstract
The aim of present study was to investigate the binding interactions of a model hydrophobic molecule, dimethylcurcumin (DMC) with nanoparticle form of bovine serum albumin (BSA) using fluorescence spectroscopy techniques. For this, BSA nanoparticles (size = 62.0 ± 3.5 nm, molecular weight = 11,243 ± 3445 kD) prepared by thermal denaturation method was mixed with DMC in solution and monitored for fluorescence emission of tryptophan (Trp) residue as well as DMC separately. The emission maximum of DMC in nanoparticles form exhibited more blue sift and quenched the excited state of tryptophan (Trp) by six fold higher than in the native form of BSA. By analyzing Trp fluorescence, the mean binding constant (K) estimated for the interaction of DMC with native and nanoparticles forms of BSA was 2.7 ± 0.4 × 104 M-1 and 1.5 ± 0.5 × 105 M-1 respectively. Together these results suggested that DMC experienced a more rigid environment in nanoparticles than in native form of BSA. Additionally the above determined K values were in agreement with those reported previously by absorption techniques. Further direct energy transfer was observed between Trp and DMC, using which the distance (r) calculated between them was 28.25 ± 0.27 Ǻ in BSA native. Similar analysis involving BSA nanoparticle and DMC revealed a distance of 24.25 ± 1.05 Ǻ between the hydrophobic core and the ligand. Finally interaction of DMC with BSA was validated through molecular docking studies, which indicated sub-domain IIA as the binding site of DMC. Thus it is concluded that intrinsic fluorescence of protein can be utilized to study the interaction of its different physical forms with any hydrophobic ligand.

Abstract
To prepare a novel highly photo-stable fluorescent chemosensor, curcumin was successfully immobilized to polyamidoamine dendrimer of zero (S1), first (S2) and second (S3) generations conjugated-UV absorber moieties. Chemical structure of synthesized chemosensors were well-analysed by FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13CNMR, elemental analysis, DSC and UV-vis techniques. Photo-physical characteristics and solvatochromism effect of three novel chemosensors in organic solvents with different dielectric constants ranged 2.21-37.78 were studied. The pH determination ability of S1, S2 and S3 in the range of 2-12 were also examined. Newly synthesized materials were employed for detection of different metal cations including Ag+, Ba2+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Fe3+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Zn2+ and their possibility to apply as a cation chemosensor were evaluated. The results showed significant changes in their fluorescence intensity upon the different pHs and cations indicating their possibility to apply as a pH and metal cation chemosensor. Among the new chemosensors under study, S1 represented high sensitivity to pH in the range of 4-8 and high selectivity for Cu2+ over the other cations.

Abstract
Curcumin isoxazole (CI) and Curcumin pyrazole (CP), the diketo modified derivatives of Curcumin (CU) are metabolically more stable and are being explored for pharmacological properties. One of the requirements in such activities is their interaction with circulatory proteins like human serum albumin (HSA). To understand this, the interactions of CI and CP with HSA have been investigated employing absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy and the results are compared with that of CU. The respective binding constants of CP, CI and CU with HSA were estimated to be 9.3×105, 8.4×105 and 2.5×105M-1, which decreased with increasing salt concentration in the medium. The extent of decrease in the binding constant was the highest in CP followed by CI and CU. This revealed that along with hydrophobic interaction other binding modes like electrostatic interactions operate between CP/CI/CU with HSA. Fluorescence quenching studies of HSA with these compounds suggested that both static and dynamic quenching mechanisms operate, where the contribution of static quenching is higher for CP and CI than that for CU. From fluorescence resonance energy transfer studies, the binding site of CU, CI and CP was found to be in domain IIA of HSA. CU was found to bind in closer proximity with Trp214 as compared to CI and CP and the same was responsible for efficient energy transfer and the same was also established by fluorescence anisotropy measurements. Furthermore docking simulation complemented the experimental observation, where both electrostatic as well as hydrophobic interactions were indicated between HSA and CP, CI and CU. This study is useful in designing more stable CU derivatives having suitable binding properties with proteins like HSA.

Abstract
To elucidate the effect of particle size of albumin nanoparticles on cellular uptake of a hydrophobic drug, herein we report the release kinetics and cytotoxicity of nanoparticle bound dimethylcurcumin (DMC) in A549 tumor cells. The bovine serum albumin (BSA) nanoparticles were prepared by thermal denaturation and characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta (ζ) -potential, circular dichroism (CD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The preparation conditions were optimized to obtain nanoparticles with mean hydrodynamic diameters 28.0nm (BSAnp1) and 52.0nm (BSAnp2) and corresponding ζ- potential value of∼-7.0 and -6.0mV, respectively. Interaction of DMC with BSA nanoparticles was investigated by UV-vis, fluorescence and CD spectroscopy. CD studies indicated significant changes in the secondary structure of BSA upon particle formation, as revealed by decrease in the helicity. The cellular uptake of DMC increased with increase in particle size and the toxicity of DMC loaded nanoparticles to A549 cells were found to be consistent with their cellular uptake. Between the two formulations studied, BSAnp2 provided enhanced cellular uptake and can be used as an effective delivery system for hydrophobic drugs like DMC.

Abstract
The novel donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D)-type fluorophore with an asymmetric structure is reported. The twisted-induced charge transfer (TICT) luminescence was observed. The degree of charge transfer and radiative rate constant in the luminescence increased simultaneously with increase in orientational polarizability of solvents. In contrast to the numerous CT fluorophore researches, this behavior has never been previously observed. This characteristic behavior reveals the existence of an effective exciton coupling between the CT states in the donor-acceptor-donor-type fluorophore for the first time.

Abstract
Mutual exclusivity in the nature of forward and reserve isomerization pathways holds promise for predictably controlling responses of photoswitchable materials according to molecular structure or external stimuli. Herein we have characterized the E/Z photoisomerization mechanisms of the visible-light-triggered switch 1,2-dithienyl-1,2-dicyanoethene (4TCE) in chlorobenzene with ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. We observe that switching mechanisms occur exclusively by relaxation through electronic manifolds of different spin multiplicity: trans-to-cis isomerization only occurs via electronic relaxation within the singlet manifold on a time scale of 40 ps; in contrast, cis-to-trans isomerization is not observed above 440 nm, but occurs via two rapid ISC processes into and out of the triplet manifold on time scales of ∼2 ps and 0.4 ns, respectively, when excited at higher energies (e.g., 420 nm). Observation of ultrafast ISC in cis-4TCE is consistent with photoinduced dynamics of related thiophene-based oligomers. Interpretation of the photophysical pathways underlying these isomerization reactions is supported by the observation that cis-to-trans isomerization occurs efficiently via triplet-sensitized energy transfer, whereas trans-to-cis isomerization does not. Quantum-chemical calculations reveal that the T1 potential energy surface is barrierless along the coordinate of the central ethylene dihedral angle (θ) from the cis Franck-Condon region (θ = 175°) to geometries that are within the region of the trans ground-state well; furthermore, the T1 and S1 surfaces cross with a substantial spin-orbital coupling. In total, we demonstrate that E/Z photoswitching of 4TCE operates by multiplicity-exclusive pathways, enabling additional means for tailoring switch performance by manipulating spin-orbit couplings through variations in molecular structure or physical environment.
