Molecular structure (monomeric and dimeric) and hydrogen bonds in 5-benzyl 2-thiohydantoin studied by FT-IR and FT-Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations

Synthesis, spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations of some 2-thiohydantoin derivatives as possible new fungicides

We present the synthesis and structure determination for two thiohydantoin compounds (5-benzylidene-2-sulfanylideneimidazolidin-4-one and 5-cinnamylidene-2-sulfanylideneimidazolidin-4-one), proposed as potential novel fungicides. The exact chemical structure of these molecules has not yet been determined since they can potentially exist in several tautomeric and geometric forms (Z-E isomerism). The geometries of all the theoretically possible structures of the studied compounds were optimised. The calculations were performed at the density functional theory level using the B3LYP functional and the 6-311++G** basis set. Based on our calculations, the most probable structures of the studied compounds were proposed. The theoretical predictions were verified by comparing the calculated IR as well as the ¹H and ¹³C NMR spectra with the experimental data. It was documented that both the studied compounds exist predominantly in the tautomeric structure, in which the movable hydrogen is connected to the nitrogen atom in the hydantoin ring. It has been experimentally proven that one of the studied compounds occurs only as a single structure, whereas the other one exists as a mixture of two geometric isomers. Solvent Effects on Gelation Behavior of the Organogelator Based on L-Phenylalanine Dihydrazide Derivatives

A series of organogelators based on L-phenylalanine has been synthesized and their gelation properties in various organic solvents were investigated. The results showed that these organogelators were capable of forming stable thermal and reversible organogels in various organic solvents at low concentrations, and the critical gel concentration (CGC) of certain solvents was less than 1.0 wt%. Afterward, the corresponding enthalpies (ΔH_g) were extracted by using the van ’t Hoff equation, as the gel–sol temperature (T_GS) was the function of the gelator concentration. The study of gelling behaviors suggested that L-phenylalanine dihydrazide derivatives were excellent gelators in solvents, especially BOC–Phe–OdHz (compound 4). The effects of the solvent on the self-assembly of gelators were analyzed by the Kamlet–Taft model, and the gelation ability of compound 4 in a certain organic solvent was described by Hansen solubility parameters and a Teas plot. Morphological investigation proved that the L-phenylalanine dihydrazide derivatives could assemble themselves into an ordered structure such as a fiber or sheet. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H NMR) studies indicated that hydrogen bonding, π–π stacking, and van der Waals forces played important roles in the formation of a gel.

Adsorption Structure and Mechanism of Styryl Phosphoric Acid at the Rutile–Water Interface

The microstructure and mechanism of styryl phosphoric acid (SPA) adsorbed at the rutile–water interface were investigated through zeta potential measurement, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of the zeta potential measurement illustrate that SPA is mainly electrostatically adsorbed on the rutile surface, and the adsorption process and result can be well fitted by the Stern-Grahame equation. The adsorption is severely affected by pH due to different species of SPA occurring in different pH solutions. The compound of P–O–Ti, with a structure of bidentate binuclear or bidentate mononuclear complexes, is formed after SPA is adsorbed on the rutile surface. SPA can be adsorbed on the rutile surface through the coordination of self-polymerization and bidentate mononuclear, which greatly increases the hydrophobicity of the rutile surface. Based on the above analysis and discussion, we proposed the adsorption model of SPA at the rutile–water interface, which was conducive to the modification and synthesis of a highly efficient flotation collector of the primary rutile ore.

Structural, Vibrational, and Electronic Properties of the Glucoalkaloid Strictosidine: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

A detailed structural analysis and spectral behavior of the glucoalkaloid strictosidine, a precursor of all monoterpene indole alkaloids, are discussed. The experimental NMR, FTIR, and UV results were compared to the theoretical DFT spectra calculated by Becke using the three-parameter Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) function with 6-31G(d) and 6-311++G(2d,p) basis sets. The theoretical geometry optimization data were compared with the X-ray data for precursors and similar structures in the associated literature. The similarity between the theoretical and experimental coupling constants values made it possible to affirm the values of dihedral angles and their configuration, reinforcing findings from previous stereochemical studies. Theoretical UV analysis agreed well with the measured experimental data, with bands assigned. Calculated HOMO/LUMO gaps show low excitation energy for strictosidine, justifying its stability and reaction kinetics. The molecular electrostatic potential map shows opposite potentials regions that form hydrogen bonds that stabilize the dimeric form, which were confirmed by excellent agreement of the dimeric form theoretical wavenumbers with the experimental IR spectrum. ESI-MS/MS data revealed patterns for the fragmentation of the protonated strictosidine molecule outlined by an NBO study.
