Tailoring Electric Double Layer by Cation Specific Adsorption for High-Voltage Quasi-Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

The interfacial instability of high-nickel layered oxides severely plagues practical application of high-energy quasi-solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, a uniform and highly oxidation-resistant polymer layer within inner Helmholtz plane is engineered by in situ polymerizing 1-vinyl-3-ethylimidazolium (VEIM) cations preferentially adsorbed on LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 (NCM83) surface, inducing the formation of anion-derived cathode electrolyte interphase with fast interfacial kinetics. Meanwhile, the copolymerization of [VEIM][BF4] and vinyl ethylene carbonate (VEC) endows P(VEC-IL) copolymer with the positively-charged imidazolium moieties, providing positive electric fields to facilitate Li+ transport and desolvation process. Consequently, the Li||NCM83 cells with a cut-off voltage up to 4.5 V exhibit excellent reversible capacity of 130 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 25 °C and considerable discharge capacity of 134 mAh g-1 without capacity decay after 100 cycles at -20 °C. This work provides deep understanding on tailoring electric double layer by cation specific adsorption for high-voltage quasi-solid-state LMBs.

Achieving 1060 mW cm-2 with 0.6 mg cm-2 Pt Loading Based on Imidazole-Riched Semi-Interpenetrating Proton Exchange Membrane at High-Temperature Fuel Cells

Enhancing phosphoric acid (PA) doping in polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes is crucial for improving the performance of high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs). However, excessive PA uptake often leads to drawbacks such as PA loss and compromised mechanical properties when surpassing PA capacity of PBI basic functionality. Herein, a new strategy that integrates high PA uptake, mechanical strength, and acid retention is proposed by embedding linear PBI chains into a crosslinked poly(N-vinylimidazole) (PVIm) backbone via in-situ polymerization. The imidazole (Im)-riched semi-interpenetrating polymer network (sIPN) membrane with high-density nitrogen moieties, significantly enhancing the PA doping degree to 380% shows an excellent conductivity (0.108 S cm-1). Meanwhile, the crosslinking structure in the sIPN membrane ensures adequate mechanical properties, low hydrogen permeability, and a relatively low swelling ratio. As a result, the single cell based on the membrane achieves the highest power density of 1060 mW cm-2 with a low Pt loading (0.6 mg cm-2) up to now and exhibits excellent fuel cell stability.

Microwave-induced one-pot synthesis of 3-imidazolyl indole clubbed 1,2,3-triazole hybrids as antiproliferative agents and density functional theory study

Herein, we outline a highly efficient PEG-4000-mediated one-pot three-component reaction for the synthesis of 3-imidazolyl indole clubbed 1,2,3-triazole derivatives (5a-r) at up to 96% yield as antiproliferative agents. This three-component protocol offers the advantages of an environmentally benign reaction, excellent yield, quick response time, and operational simplicity triggered by the copper catalyst under microwave irradiation. All the synthesized compounds were tested for antiproliferative activity against six human solid tumor cell lines, that is, A549 and SW1573 (nonsmall cell lung), HBL100 and T-47D (breast), HeLa (cervix), and WiDr (colon). Among them, six compounds, 5g-j, 5m, and 5p, demonstrated effective antiproliferative action with GI50 values under 10 μM. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed for all the synthesized molecules through geometry optimizations, frontier molecular orbital approach, and molecular electrostatic potential (MESP). The theoretical DFT calculation was performed using the DFT/B3LYP/6-31+G (d,p) basis set. Moreover, the biological reactivity of all the representative synthesized molecules was compared with the theoretically calculated quantum chemical descriptors and MESP 3D plots. We also investigated the drug-likeness characteristic and absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity (ADMET) prediction. In general, our approach enables environmentally friendly access to 3-imidazolyl indole clubbed 1,2,3-triazole derivatives as prospective antiproliferative agents.

PEGylated curcumin-loaded poly(vinyl alcohol)/Zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine vinylimidazole)-grafted chitosan nanofiber as a second-degree burn wound dressing

Burn injuries damage skin function and increased the risk of infection. Using natural-inspired antibiotic-free nanofibrous in wound healing has attracted increasing attention. Here, mPEG-Curcumin (mPEG-CUR) was synthesized through a novel, cheap, and high-efficiency method, and incorporated onto poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/zwitterionic poly(sulfobetaine vinylimidazole)-grafted chitosan (CS-g-PNVIS) nanofiber. Due to the lack of electrospinning capability of CS-g-PNVIS and its brittleness, to obtain nanofibers with uniform and bead-free morphology, PVA was used as an electrospinning aid polymer, so that the prepared nanofibers have suitable mechanical properties with an average diameter between 115 ± 18-157 ± 39 nm. The heat-treated nanofibers have adequate swelling and dimensional stability. Time-killing assay proved the antibacterial activity of the mPEG-CUR-loaded nanofibers towards Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterium. The MTT investigation illustrated the non-cytotoxicity and biocompatibility of the nanofibers. In vivo studies exhibited significant improvement in the mean wound area closure by applying mPEG-CUR nanofibers. The mPEG-CUR-loaded nanofibers showed the highest antioxidant (86 %) power after 40 min. Moreover, nanofibers possess a desirable WVT rate (3.4 ± 0.24-5.5 ± 0.3 kg/m2.d) and good breathability and had the potential to supply a suitable moist environment in the wounded area. This approach can be the beginning of a new path in designing a new generation of nanofiber mats for wound healing applications.

Effect of Counterions on the Physicomechanical Properties of Copper-Nitrogen-Coordinated Metallosupramolecular Elastomers

Metallosupramolecular elastomers have attracted much attention due to their excellent mechanical properties, flexible tailoring of performance, and responsiveness to photo and thermal stimuli. The physicomechanical properties of metallosupramolecular elastomers are highly dependent on metal salts and ligand units; however, the role of counterions lacks practical exploration. To this end, we synthesized a simple acrylate copolymer model and introduced copper salts with different counterions to construct dynamic copper-nitrogen coordination cross-linked networks. This approach generated a series of elastomers with a tensile strength of over 10 MPa and a laser self-healing efficiency of over 90% within 2 min. In particular, we studied the effects of counterions on the thermodynamic, viscoelastic, mechanical, photothermal, and self-healing properties of the materials. Therefore, this work can provide instruction for the preparation and performance tailoring of metallosupramolecular elastomers.

Ultrasound-promoted convenient and ionic liquid [BMIM]BF4 assisted green synthesis of diversely functionalized pyrazolo quinoline core via one-pot multicomponent reaction, DFT study and pharmacological evaluation

An ultrasound-assisted green protocol for one-pot synthesis of a new series of pharmaceutically relevant pyrazolo quinoline derivatives (4a-t) were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated using DFT and biological activities. Pyrazolo quinoline derivatives (4a-t) were synthesized via a three-component tandem reaction of 1,3-dicarbonyl compound (1a-b), substituted aromatic aldehyde (2a-o), and 5-amino indazole (3a) in the presence of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BMIM]BF₄ ionic liquid in ethanol at ambient conditions. The main purpose of the present work is selective functionalization of pyrazolo quinoline (4a-t) core excluding another potential parallel reaction under environmentally benign reaction conditions. The present protocol shows features such as amphiphilic behavior of ionic liquid during reaction transformation, and reusability of the [BMIM]BF₄ ionic liquid under mild reaction condition. All newly derived compounds were evaluated for their in vitro anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Among them, compound 4c showed encouraging antioxidant activity compared with standard antioxidant ascorbic acid, and compounds 4n and 4r displayed very good anti-inflammatory activity compared with a standard drug. In this study, a theoretical computational density functional study was also executed to perform the geometry optimizations, frontier molecular orbital approach, and molecular electrostatic potential (MESP). The DFT study was carried out with the basis set DFT/B3LYP/6-31+G (d, p) level of theory. The quantum chemical descriptors (QCDS) and MESP diagrams were plotted to examine the biological reactivities of representative pyrazolo quinolines (4a-t).

Room-Temperature, Ionic-Liquid-Enhanced, Beta-Cyclodextrin-Based, Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for the Selective Extraction of Abamectin

To ensure environmental protection and food quality and safety, the trace level detection of pesticide residues with molecularly imprinted polymers using a more economic, reliable, and greener approach is always demanded. Herein, novel, enhanced, imprinted polymers based on beta-cyclodextrin, using room-temperature, ionic liquid as a solvent for abamectin were developed with a simple polymerization process. The successful synthesis of the polymers was verified, with morphological and structural characterization performed via scanning electron microscope analysis, nitrogen adsorption experiments, and thermogravimetric analysis. The imprinted polymers showed good adsorption ability, which was confirmed with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a Langmuir isotherm model, as they exhibit a theoretical adsorption of 15.08 mg g⁻¹ for abamectin. The polymers showed high selectivity for abamectin and significant reusability without significant performance loss. The MIPs were used to analyze abamectin in spiked apple, banana, orange, and grape samples, and as a result, a good recovery of 81.67−101.47%, with 1.26−4.36% relative standard deviation, and limits of detection and quantitation of 0.02 µg g⁻¹ and 0.05 µg g⁻¹, respectively, was achieved within a linear range of 0.03−1.50 µg g⁻¹. Thus, room-temperature, ionic-liquid-enhanced, beta-cyclodextrin-based, molecularly imprinted polymers for the selective detection of abamectin proved to be a convenient and practical platform.

Constructing High-Recognition Protein-Imprinted Materials Using "Specially Designed" Block Macromolecular Chains as Functional Monomers and Crosslinkers

The use of a macromolecularly functional monomer and crosslinker (MFM) to stabilize and imprint a template protein is a new method to construct high-recognition protein-imprinted materials. In this study, for the first time, a "specially designed" block MFM with both "functional capability" and "crosslinking capability" segments was synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization and used to fabricate bovine serum albumin (BSA)-imprinted microspheres (SiO₂@MPS@MIPs-MFM) by the surface imprinting strategy. Results from circular dichroic spectrum experiments reflected that the block MFM could maintain the natural form of BSA, whereas its corresponding and equivalent micromolecularly functional monomer (MIM) seriously destroyed the secondary structure of proteins. Batch rebinding experiments showed that the maximum adsorption capacity and imprinting factor of SiO₂@MPS@MIPs-MFM reached 314.9 mg g^-1 and 4.02, which were significantly superior to that of MIM-based imprinted materials. In addition, since the crosslinking capability segments in block MFM involved zwitterionic functional groups with a protein-repelling effect, SiO₂@MPS@MIPs-MFM showed better specific rebinding ability than the imprinted material prepared by MFM without this component. Besides, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images showed that the shell thickness of SiO₂@MPS@MIPs-MFM was approximately 15 nm, and such a thin imprinted layer ensured its rapid adsorption equilibrium (120 min). As a result, SiO₂@MPS@MIPs-MFM revealed fantastic selectivity and recognition ability in a mixed protein solution and could efficiently extract BSA from biological samples of bovine calf serum. The proposal of block MFM enriched the options and designability of monomers in protein imprinting technology, thereby laying a foundation for developing high-performance protein-imprinted materials.

Ionic transport kinetics and enhanced energy storage in the electrode/poly(N-vinyl imidazole) interface for micro-supercapacitors

The detailed understanding and control of ionic transport pathways in the electrode/electrolyte interface is vital for realizing micro-scale energy storage devices and formulating adequate design principles. A planar device geometry with nanostructured thin solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) and potassium hydroxide (KOH) incorporated poly(N-vinyl imidazole) (PVI) is demonstrated for micro-supercapacitors (MSCs). The adsorption/desorption kinetics of ionic charges in the interfacial regime of ITO/PVI–KOH has been investigated for electrical double layer capacitance (EDLC) characteristics. A single-cell of ITO/PVI–KOH/ITO planar MSC shows the large variation in volumetric capacitance and capacitance retention characteristics when the thickness of PVI–KOH approaches the characteristic nanoscale. Moreover, ITO/PVI–KOH/ITO planar MSC consisting of five series-cells exhibits the maximum operating cell voltage of 5.0 V with maximum volumetric energy and power density of 0.056 mW h cm⁻³ and 6.89 mW cm⁻³, respectively. The electrochemical properties of planar MSC have been systematically studied so as to confirm how the anions and cations are separated at electrode/electrolyte interfaces by means of an electromotive force. Significantly, the hydrated PVI enables charge migration and separation of cations and anions at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces.

The ionic charge transport kinetics in the poly(N-vinylimidazole) and energy storage at the electrode/poly(N-vinylimidazole) interfaces have been systematically studied for high performance micro-supercapacitors.

New Grafted Copolymers Carrying Betaine Units Based on Gellan and N-Vinylimidazole as Precursors for Design of Drug Delivery Systems

New grafted copolymers possessing structural units of 1-vinyl-3-(1-carboxymethyl) imidazolium betaine were obtained by graft copolymerization of N-vinylimidazole onto gellan gum followed by the polymer-analogous reactions on grafted polymer with the highest grafting percentage using sodium chloroacetate as the betainization agent. The grafted copolymers were prepared using ammonium persulfate/N,N,N',N' tetramethylethylenediamine in a nitrogen atmosphere. The grafting reaction conditions were optimized by changing one of the following reaction parameters: initiator concentration, monomer concentration, polymer concentration, reaction time or temperature, while the other parameters remained constant. The highest grafting yield was obtained under the following reaction conditions: ci = 0.08 mol/L, cm = 0.8 mol/L, cp = 8 g/L, tr = 4 h and T = 50 °C. The kinetics of the graft copolymerization of N-vinylimidazole onto gellan was discussed and a suitable reaction mechanism was proposed. The evidence of the grafting reaction was confirmed through FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, 1H-NMR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The grafted copolymer with betaine structure was obtained by a nucleophilic substitution reaction where the betainization agent was sodium chloroacetate. Preliminary results prove the ability of the grafted copolymers to bind amphoteric drugs (cefotaxime) and, therefore, the possibility of developing the new sustained drug release systems.

The structure and volume phase transition behavior of poly(N-vinylcaprolactam)-based hybrid microgels containing carbon nanodots

In this paper, we investigated the internal structure and the volume phase transition (VPT) behavior of poly(N-vinylcaprolactam-co-vinylimidazole)/polymerizable carbon nanodot (P(VCL-co-VIM)/PCND) microgels with different amounts of PCNDs. Our study shows that compared to the pure P(VCL-co-VIM) microgel, the hybrid microgels undergo a two-step VPT as the temperature increases and a core-shell(-corona) structure of the hybrid microgels is formed by copolymerization with PCNDs. A change in the amount of PCNDs has effects on both of the volume phase transition temperature and internal structure of microgels. Moreover, based on FT-IR in combination with perturbation correlation moving window (PCMW) and two-dimensional correlation spectral (2Dcos) analyses, the difference in VPT behavior between the shell and the core (corona) structure of the hybrid microgels at the molecular level is elucidated. The core/shell of the hybrid microgels fixed with hydrophilic PCNDs has a higher transition temperature during heating and a more compact structure due to the additional crosslinkers PCNDs.
