Experimental and theoretical studies on the vibrational spectra of trans-3-phenylacryloyl chloride

The influence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds on single fluorescence mechanism of 1-hydroxy-11H-benzo [b]fluoren-11-one and 10-hydroxy-11H-benzo [b]fluoren-11-one

Solvent effects usually have an essential effect on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) processes and fluorescence mechanism. This contribution presents new insights into a newly synthesized compound, namely, 10-hydroxy-11H-benzo [b]fluoren-11-one (10-HHBF), and its analogue 1-hydroxy-11H-benzo [b]fluoren-11-one (1-HHBF), which exhibit single-fluorescence properties in protic solvents (methanol, MeOH), using time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The results established four schemes, namely, MeOH-1, MeOH-2, MeOH-3, and MeOH-4, for 1-HHBF and 10-HHBF in MeOH. Absorption and emission spectra showed that the 1-HHBF and 10-HHBF at the conformation MeOH-2, MeOH-3 and MeOH-4 were closer to the experimental values than those at the MeOH-1. Energy barriers indicate the possibility of the ESIPT and ESPT process in 1-HHBF and 10-HHBF under the four schemes. Moreover, reverse PT processes were easy to occur at the conformations of MeOH-2, MeOH-3, and MeOH-4 in the S₁ state. Given the single-fluorescence properties of 1-HHBF and 10-HHBF in the experiment, the conformation MeOH-1 was excluded. Therefore, our contribution proved that MeOH-2, MeOH-3, and MeOH-4 might exist in single fluorescence, and the hydrogen bond at the MeOH-2 position plays a decisive role, indicating the intermolecular hydrogen bonding interaction on the acceptor atom will have a more significant impact on the fluorescence properties of the substance.

Theoretical Investigation of Excited-State Intramolecular Double-Proton Transfer Mechanism of Substituent Modified 1, 3-Bis (2-Pyridylimino)-4,7-Dihydroxyisoindole in Dichloromethane Solution

In this paper, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) methods were used to investigate substituent effects and excited-state intramolecular double-proton transfer (ESIDPT) in 1, 3-bis (2-pyridylimino)-4, 7-dihydroxyisoindole (BPI–OH) and its derivatives. The results of a systematic study of the substituent effects of electron-withdrawing groups (F, Cl and Br) on the adjacent sites of the benzene ring were used to regulate the photophysical properties of the molecules and the dynamics of the proton-transfer process. Geometric structure comparisons and infrared (IR) spectroscopic analysis confirmed that strengthening of the intramolecular hydrogen bond in the first excited state (S1) facilitated proton transfer. Functional analysis of the reduced density gradient confirmed these conclusions. Double-proton transfer in BPI–OH is considered to occur in two steps, i.e., BPI–OH (N) [Formula: see text] BPI–OH (T1) [Formula: see text] BPI–OH (T2), in the ground state (S0) and the S1 state. The potential-energy curves (PECs) for two-step proton transfer were scanned for both the S0 and S1 states to clarify the mechanisms and pathways of proton transfer. The stepwise path in which two protons are consecutively transferred has a low energy barrier and is more rational and favorable. This study shows that the presence or absence of coordinating groups, and the type of coordinating group, affect the hydrogen-bond strength. A coordinating group enhances hydrogen-bond formation, i.e., it promotes excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT).

Solvent effect on the excited-state intramolecular double proton transfer of 1,3-bis(2-pyridylimino)-4,7-dihydroxyisoindole

Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) are used to study the solvatochromic effect and the excited-state intramolecular double proton transfer (ESIDPT) of 1,3-Bis(2-pyridylimino)-4,7-dihydroxyisoindole (BPI-OH) in different kinds of solvents. The hydrogen bonding parameters and IR spectra reveal that in the excited state, the strength of excited hydrogen bond increase with the decrease of solvent polarity. Furthermore, the reduction density gradient (RDG) analysis confirms the corresponding conclusion. Frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) are analyzed, illuminating that the smaller the polarity of solvent, the smaller the energy gap between the HOMO and LUMO. The structures of BPI-OH (N) (normal), BPI-OH (T₁) (single), and BPI-OH (T₂) (double) were optimized. Previous reports found the double protons in BPI-OH molecule are transferred step-by-step process BPI-OH(N)→BPI-OH(T₁)→BPI-OH(T₂) in the ground state (S₀) and the first excited singlet state (S₁). Here, the potential energy curves of O₁-H₂ and O₄-H₅ in the S₀ and S₁ states were scanned in four kinds of solvents, respectively. It was found that in S₁ state, BPI-OH(N)→BPI-OH(T₁) was more prone to proton transfer than BPI-OH(T₁)→BPI-OH(T₂). In addition, by comparing the reaction energy barriers of the four kinds of solvents, it can be found that ESIPT is difficult to occur with the increase of solvent polarity. Meanwhile, it was also studied that MeOH as an explicit solvent was more likely to promote the ESIPT process than other implicit solvents.

Sensing mechanism of a new fluorescent probe for hydrogen sulfide: photoinduced electron transfer and invalidity of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer

It is of great significance for biological research to develop efficient detection methods of hydrogen sulfide (H2S). When DFAN reacts with H2S, 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether group acting as an electron acceptor generates a hydroxyl-substituted 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether group, resulting in the disappearance of photoinduced electron transfer (PET), and the new formed DFAH can be observed, while being accompanied by a significant fluorescence. In the present study, the PET sensing mechanism of probe DFAN and the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process of DFAH have been explored in detail based on the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods. Our theoretical results show that the fluorescence quenching of DFAN is caused by the PET mechanism, and the result of ESIPT mechanism is not due to the large Stokes shift fluorescence emission of DFAH. We also optimized the geometric structure of the transition state of DFAH. The frontier molecular orbitals and potential barrier show that the ESIPT process does not easy occur easily for DFAH. The enol structure of DFAH is more stable than that of the keto structure. The absence of the PET process resulted in the enol structure emitting strong fluorescence, which is consistent with the single fluorescence in the experiment. Above all, our calculations are sufficient to verify the sensing mechanism of H2S using DFAN.

The molecular structure, spectroscopic features and electronic properties of tioxolone under the external electric field

It is very helpful to understand the properties of molecules by studying a series of physical and chemical changes in molecules under an external electric field (EEF). Tioxolone is an important bioactive compound for its wide applications in the medical field. In this work, density function theory calculations combined with EEF were used to investigate the structure, spectra and electronic properties of tioxolone. The calculated results indicate that the bond lengths, bond angles, total energy, dipole moment, charge and aromaticity of tioxolone change under EEF. As EEF increases, the energy gap of tioxolone gradually reduces and makes it easier to participate in chemical reactions. Under the effect of EEF, the infrared and UV-Vis spectra show vibrational stark effect, which causes a redshift or blueshift of the frequency. These results help to understand the effect of EEF on structures and electronic properties for tioxolone, which will further provide effective guidance for the various application of tioxolone.

A new interpretation of the ESIPT mechanism of 2-(benzimidazol-2-yl)-3-hydroxychromone derivatives

The present study demonstrates the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanism of 2-(benzimidazol-2-yl)-3-hydroxychromone (DH3B2) is based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods. We find that DH3B2-C is the main conformation to occur ESIPT. Moreover, we get the different results of DH3B2 for the ESIPT mechanisms in comparison with the previous reports. We have optimized three isomers (DH3B2-A, DH3B2-B and DH3B2-C), and calculated absorption and fluorescence spectra, which agree well with the experimental data. Furthermore, we prove the hydrogen bond is enhanced in the S₁ state by comparing infrared vibrational spectra, the relevant bond length and bond angle. In our calculations, the results of the three levels of calculations (CAM-B3LYP/TZVP, B3LYP/TZVP and PBEPBE/TZVP) indicate that DH3B2-C is the most stable conformation, by compared the single point energy of three isomers. By constructed the potential energy surfaces (PESs), we find the converted relationship among the three isomers; DH3B2-C is the main conformation in which DH3B2 exists. Furthermore, combination with reduced density gradient (RDG) function, the hydrogen bond of DH3B2-C is stronger than that of DH3B2-A and DH3B2-B, which proves that DH3B2-C form is the most favorable form for ESIPT among the three isomers. Meanwhile, we have further investigated the ESIPT mechanisms of DH3B2, via constructing the potential energy curves (PECs). These results have shown that DH3B2-C is easier to ESIPT occur than DH3B2-A and DH3B2-B. Therefore, the proton receptors of the ESIPT are mainly the benzimidazole nitrogen atoms.

A theoretical study of the ESIPT mechanism of 3-hydroxyflavone derivatives: solvation effect and the importance of TICT for its dual fluorescence properties

As the dielectric constant decreases, the ESIPT reaction occurs more easily and TICT is good at emitting double fluorescence.

pH-Dependent reversible crystal transformation of 1-carboxymethyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium bromides and their spectroscopic fingerprint

In this work, two 1-carboxymethyl-1-methyl-pyrrolidinium bromides (N-methylpyrrolidine betaine hydrobromides) with the stoichiometry of betaine:hydrobromic acid as 1:1 and 2:1, denoted as CMPRHBr-I and CMPRHBr-II, respectively, were prepared and crystallographically determined. The large difference in these two structures is the type of hydrogen bonds, resulting in the different thermal stability. A strong OH⋯Br hydrogen bond was observed in CMPRHBr-I, whereas O⋯H⋯O hydrogen bond in CMPRHBr-II. Both these two crystals can mutually transform by changing the pH value of the aqueous solution. Vibrational spectroscopic studies shows that these two structures can be easily distinguished by the characteristic bands such as νCO stretching vibration and the D-type bands. Our studies indicate that it should be cautious of the structural change as this type of organic salts was purified and recrystallized.
