Insights into chalcone analogues with potential as antioxidant additives in diesel-biodiesel blends

Biodiesel production is one of the promising strategies to reduce diesel consumption and an important contribution to climate change. However, biodiesel stability remains a challenging problem in biofuel use in the global energy matrix. In this context, organic additives have been investigated to minimize these problems and reduce harmful emissions to comply with fuel requirement standards. In this study, we discuss a comprehensive structural description, a behavior of B15 [85% volume of diesel and 15% volume of biodiesel (B100)] stability in the presence of antioxidants (chalcone analogues), and a theoretical calculation to pave the way for clarifying and expanding the potential of title compounds as an antioxidant additive for diesel-biodiesel blends. Finally, a systematic description of the oxidation stability was undertaken using a specialized machine learning computational pySIRC platform.

Removal of emerging pollutant dibutylhydroxytoluene from water with CNT/TiO2 catalysts in a visible LED photoreactor

For the photocatalytic degradation of antioxidant 2,6-di-tert-butyl-hydroxytoluene (BHT), several TiO₂-based composites have been prepared in MWCNT from titanium isopropoxide and ethanol via supercritical CO₂ synthesis followed by calcination at 400 °C. TEM and XRD showed uniform coverage of CNT by 10 nm TiO₂ particles in the anatase form, and spectral analyses revealed the formation of CNT/TiO₂ structure. Further, synthesized material displayed significant visible light absorption and absorption edge shifted to longer wavelengths. Once the material was characterized, the effect of adsorption and photochemical degradation of BHT was investigated in the wavelength range from 400 to 700 nm, in batch mode, by monitoring the concentrations of BHT as a function of time. CNT/TiO₂ composites were more efficient than commercial TiO₂ P25 in the photodegradation of the antioxidant. In particular, CNT⁵⁰/TiO₂⁵⁰, a composite with 50% by weight of CNT, was the best catalyst, stable, and completely degrading BHT within 30 min of exposure to visible light. The role played by different reactive oxidative species (h⁺, OH ^·, ¹O₂, and [Formula: see text]) in the photocatalytic reaction was also studied by using appropriate radical scavengers that inhibited the corresponding active species. Superoxide radical was found the main oxidizing agent.

Dithione, the antipodal redox partner of ene-1,2-dithiol ligands and their metal complexes

Defining the oxidation state of the central atom in a coordination compound is fundamental in understanding the electronic structure and provides a starting point for elucidating molecular properties. The presence of non-innocent ligand(s) can obscure the oxidation state of the central atom as the ligand contribution to the electronic structure is difficult to ascertain. Redox-active ligands, such as dithiolene ligands, are well known non-innocent ligands that can exist in both a fully reduced (Dt2-) and fully oxidized (Dt0) states. Complexes containing the fully oxidized dithione state of the ligand are uncommon and only a few have been completely characterized. Dithione ligands are of interest due to their electron-deficient nature and ability to act as an electron acceptor for more electron-rich moieties, such as other dithiolene ligands or metal centers. This article focuses the syntheses, structures, and metal coordination, particularly coordination compounds, of dithione ligands. Various examples of mono, bis, and tris dithione complexes are discussed.
