Abstract
Analyte-triggered nanoparticle (NP) assemblies in bulk colloidal suspension have been extensively utilized in various optical sensors. Nevertheless, the assembling process is still limited by the slow diffusion dynamics of NPs and the low concentration of analytes in trace detections, which hinders further improvement of the sensitivity and repeatability of the sensors. In this work, by functionalizing the gold NPs with specific ligands, we constructed a dual-mode optical sensing platform for multianalytes based on the plasmonic NP array at the liquid-liquid interface. Through emulsification, the NP diffusion kinetics are boosted for several orders, and the NPs are condensed from the bulk aqueous phase to the liquid-liquid interface as a plasmonic array. The as-formed metasurface generates major reflectance and surface-enhanced Raman scattering changes in response to analytes, providing two optical sensing modes. As prototypes, cysteine and glucose are selected as the target molecules, achieving the limit of detection as 193 ± 2 and 297 ± 12 pM, respectively.

Abstract
Carbohydrate sensing in an aqueous solution remains a very challenging area of interest. Using the idea of covalent reversible interaction between boronic acids and the diol groups in carbohydrates enable us to design a carbohydrate sensor 1-thianthrenylboronic acid (1T), which has high selectivity towards fructose. To elucidate the sensing and binding properties of 1T with sugars, we have incorporated theoretical (DFT and TD-DFT) and spectroscopic techniques. For an optimized geometry, the complete vibrational assignments were done with FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra. Physiochemical parameters were obtained by implementing frontier molecular orbital (FMO) analysis. Further, excited state properties were determined by performing TD-DFT calculations in solvent and these properties were in good agreement with the experiment. The steady state fluorescence measurements with varying concentration of sugars, revealed that the fluorescence intensity of boronic acid is enhanced by studied sugars due to the structural modification. We also noticed remarkable changes in fluorescence lifetimes and quantum yield after adding sugars. The article also reports influence of pH on boronic acid's fluorescence intensity with and without sugars. The fluorescence of boronic acid increases with the increase in pH. These changes are due to acid-base equilibrium of boronic acid and led us to estimate the pKa value of 7.6. All the theoretical and experimental evidences suggested that 1T can be used as a possible fluorescent sensor for fructose. In addition, 1T showed very good affinity for Cu2+ ion with Ka = 150 × 102 M-1, which suggests that 1T can also be used as a chemosensor for Cu2+ ions.

Abstract
Boronic acids are the key compounds in Suzuki coupling reactions and in the detection of monosaccharides. The C-B bond cleavage deboronation is an important side reaction that lowers the Suzuki coupling reaction yield and even disables saccharide detection. Here, we report that protodeboronation occurs for 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (MPBA) within narrow nanogaps between gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and planar gold substrates. The irradiation of such nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) systems at 785 nm drives the protodeboronation reaction to form benzenethiol (BT). Wavelength-dependence experiments, combined with dark-field single-particle scattering spectroscopy, reveal that excitation of the bonding dipole plasmon mode of the NPoM leads to the best efficiency. Among the excited plasmon decay pathways, the generation of hot charge carriers induces the protodeboronation of MPBA. The possibility of plasmonic thermal reactions is ruled out because external heating of the substrates does not cause the reaction to take place. A comparison of the reaction yield under ambient, Ar, and oxygen gas conditions reveals that hot charge carriers directly transfer to MPBA, which subsequently produces BT, but the presence of oxygen promotes the reaction by opening another hot-electron transfer channel. The protodeboronation reaction of MPBA is an important addition to the catalog of plasmon-driven chemical reactions, not only because the reaction is relevant to organic and analytical chemistry but also because it deepens our understanding of the hot carrier dynamics at the interface between plasmonic nanoparticles and molecules.

Abstract
A surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method is described for the determination of trace polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the environment efficiently and economically. Detection sensitivity is improved by modifying gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) conjugated to β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as a new method for ratiometric determination of PAHs in solution. Pyrene (with a Raman band at 580 cm-1) and anthracene (750 cm-1) were used as the model analytes, while 4-MPBA (1570 cm-1) was used as the internal reference to normalize the SERS signals. The intensity ratios of pyrene/4-MPBA increase linearly in the 2 to 10 nM pyrene concentration range, and the intensity ratios of anthracene/4-MPBA increase linearly in the 10 to 100 nM anthracene concentration range. The detection limits are 0.4 nM for pyrene and 4.4 nM for anthracene. This method was applied to the determination of the two analytes in soil sample extracts and the recoveries of pyrene (at levels of 236 ng∙g-1 and 170 ng∙g-1) and anthracene (334 ng∙g-1 and 510 ng∙g-1) agreed well with the results from GC-MS analyses. The good recovery rates (101.8% and 102.5% for pyrene and 106.4% and 101.7% for anthracene) confirmed the reliability of the method. Abstract
4-Mercaptophenylboronic Acid (4-MPBA) plays pivotal role in various fields. The orientation and existing form of the 4-MPBA strongly depend on the pH value of the media. The general aim of this work is to obtain information about the structure changes of 4-MPBA absorbed on Ag nanoparticles in different pH environment. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique is a simple and rapid method to study adsorption phenomena at molecule level. The investigation is done by means of SERS. In order to interpret the experimental information, a series of SERS spectra is carried out. The relative intensities of the totally symmetric (a1 mode) and non-totally symmetric (b2 mode) bands in the SERS spectra of 4-MPBA change depend on the environmental pH values, which is a manifestation of charge transfer (CT) processes. The degree of charge transfer increases with the pH value of the media changing from acidity to alkalinity. The structure changes of MPBA had been carried out in different pH environment. We envision that this approach will be of great significance in related fields of 4-MPBA-involved detection.
