Abstract
Cyclodextrins (CDs) are a family of cyclic oligosaccharides, consisting of a macrocyclic ring of glucose subunits linked by α-1,4 glycosidic bonds. The shape of CD molecules is similar to a truncated cone with a hydrophobic inner cavity and a hydrophilic surface, which allows the formation of inclusion complexes with various molecules. This review article summarises over 200 reports published by the end of 2021 that discuss the complexation of CDs with antibiotics and antibacterial agents, including beta-lactams, tetracyclines, quinolones, macrolides, aminoglycosides, glycopeptides, polypeptides, nitroimidazoles, and oxazolidinones. The review focuses on drug-delivery applications such as improving solubility, modifying the drug-release profile, slowing down the degradation of the drug, improving biological membrane permeability, and enhancing antimicrobial activity. In addition to simple drug/CD combinations, ternary systems with additional auxiliary substances have been described, as well as more sophisticated drug-delivery systems including nanosponges, nanofibres, nanoparticles, microparticles, liposomes, hydrogels, and macromolecules. Depending on the desired properties of the drug product, an accelerated or prolonged dissolution profile can be achieved when combining CD with antibiotics or antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Pharmaceutical effluents are a serious environmental issue, which require to be treated by a suitable technique; thus, the electrochemical process is actively considered as a viable method for the treatment. In this work, new carbon paste electrodes (CPEs) were fabricated by compressing gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs), namely, CPE/Ag NPs, CPE/Au NPs, and CPE/Ag/Au NPs and then completely characterized by different analytical methods. The performance of the electrodes was studied after determining their surface area (×10-6 cm2) as 4.17, 5.05, 5.27, and 5.12, producing high anodic currents for K4[Fe(CN)6] compared to the commercial electrode. This agrees with the results of impedance study, where the electron transfer rate constants (kapp, ×10-3 cm s-1) were determined to be 28.7, 42.6, 41.0, and 101.4 for CPE, CPE/Ag NPs, CPE/Au NPs, and CPE/Ag/Au NPs, respectively, through the Bode plot-phase shifts. This is consistent with the charge transfer resistance (RCT, Ω), resulting as 171 for CPE/Ag/Au NPs < 395 for CPE/Ag NPs < 427 for CPE/Au NPs and < 742 for CPE. Therefore, these electrodes were employed to detect trimethoprim (TMP) since metallic NPs contribute good crystallinity, stability, conduciveness, and surface plasmon resonance to the CPE, convalescing the sensitivity; comprehensively, they were applied for its detection in real water and human urine samples, and the limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 0.026, 0.032, and 0.026 μmol L-1 for CPE/Ag NPs, CPE/Au NPs, and CPE/Ag/Au NPs, respectively. In contrast, unmodified CPE was unable to detect TMP due to the lack of efficiency. The developed technique shows excellent electrochemical recovery of 92.3 and 97.1% in the urine sample. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to explain the impact of the metallic center in graphite through density of states (DOS).

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a neglected issue that poses a serious global threat to public health, causing long-term negative consequences at both humanitarian and economic levels. Herein, we report an unprecedented economic fabrication method of seven potentiometric screen-printed sensors for the ultra-trace determination of gemifloxacin (GEMI) as a model of the fluoroquinolones antibiotics deeply involved in the growing AMR problem. Sensors were constructed by depositing homemade carbon ink on a recycled X-ray sheet, patterned using stencils printed with an office printer in simple, cost-effective steps requiring no sophisticated equipment. Four sensors were modified using carbon quantum dots (CQDs) synthesized from dextrose through a single-step method. Sensors exhibited a linear response in the concentration ranges 10−5–10−2 M (sensors 1, 3 and 4), 10−6–10−3 M (sensor 2) and 10−6–10−2 M (sensors 5, 6 and 7). LOD allowed tracing of the target drug at a nano-molar level down to 210 nM. GEMI was successfully determined in pharmaceutical formulations and different water samples without any pretreatment steps with satisfactory recovery (96.93–105.28% with SD values < 3). All sensors revealed a long lifetime of up to several months and are considered promising tools for monitoring water quality and efficiency of water treatment measures.

Abstract
The study mainly aimed to improve the aqueous solubility of Balofloxacin (BLFX) by preparing the inclusion complexes (ICs) of BLFX with cyclodextrins (CDs). In this study, ICs in solid state were obtained by using beta-CD (β-CD), 2-hydroxypropyl-β-CD (HP-β-CD), 2, 6-dimethyl-β-CD (DM-β-CD) through a freeze-drying technique. The formation of ICs was confirmed through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, powder X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, and scanning electron microscopy. Results demonstrated that the water solubility and dissolution rates of three ICs were distinctly improved than that of parent BLFX. Bacteriostatic experiment manifested that the antibacterial effect of BLFX was not inhibited after encapsulation in CDs. The damage of BLFX to kidney and liver cells was reduced. Consequently, successful preparation of the ICs of BLFX with CDs provided possibility for devising new dosage form of BLFX, which held great promise for further applications in clinical fields.

Abstract
The inclusion complexes of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) and (2-hydroxypropyl) β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) were prepared. Fluorescence spectroscopy and electrospray mass spectrometry, ESI-MS, were used to investigate and characterize the inclusion complexation of SMX with cyclodextrins in solutions. Whereas in the solid state the complexes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and Raman techniques. Enhanced twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT), emission as well as local excited (LE) bands were observed upon addition of HPβCD indicate that SMX enters deeper into the cyclodextrins cavity. The stoichiometries and association constants of these complexes have been determined by monitoring the fluorescence data. The effect of presence of ternary components like arginine and cysteine on the complexation efficiency of SMX with cyclodextrins was investigated. Molecular Dynamic simulations were also performed to shed an atomistic insight into the complexation mechanism. The results obtained showed that complexes of SMX with both cyclodextrins are stabilized in aqueous media by strong hydrogen bonding interactions.

Abstract
Background Enteric fever has persistence of great impact in Sudanese public health especially during rainy season when the causative agent Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi possesses pan endemic patterns in most regions of Sudan - Khartoum. Objectives The present study aims to assess the recent state of antibiotics susceptibility of Salmonella Typhi with special concern to multidrug resistance strains and predict the emergence of new resistant patterns and outbreaks. Methods Salmonella Typhi strains were isolated and identified according to the guidelines of the International Standardization Organization and the World Health Organization. The antibiotics susceptibilities were tested using the recommendations of the Clinical Laboratories Standards Institute. Predictions of emerging resistant bacteria patterns and outbreaks in Sudan were done using logistic regression, forecasting linear equations and in silico simulations models. Results A total of 124 antibiotics resistant Salmonella Typhi strains categorized in 12 average groups were isolated, different patterns of resistance statistically calculated by (y = ax − b). Minimum bactericidal concentration’s predication of resistance was given the exponential trend (y = n ex) and the predictive coefficient R2 > 0 < 1 are approximately alike. It was assumed that resistant bacteria occurred with a constant rate of antibiotic doses during the whole experimental period. Thus, the number of sensitive bacteria decreases at the same rate as resistant occur following term to the modified predictive model which solved computationally. Conclusion This study assesses the prediction of multi-drug resistance among S. Typhi isolates by applying low cost materials and simple statistical methods suitable for the most frequently used antibiotics as typhoid empirical therapy. Therefore, bacterial surveillance systems should be implemented to present data on the aetiology and current antimicrobial drug resistance patterns of community-acquired agents causing outbreaks. Abstract
The supramolecular interaction between cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) as the host and the anti-cancer drug methotrexate (MTX) as the guest was studied using fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, 1H NMR, 2D NOESY, and theoretical calculations. The experimental results confirmed the formation of 1:2 inclusion complex with CB[7] and indicated a simple and sensitive competitive method for the fluorescence detection of MTX. It was found that the fluorescence intensities of CB[7]-palmatine, CB[7]-berberine and CB[7]-coptisine were quenched linearly upon the addition of MTX. The linear ranges obtained in the detection of MTX were 0.1-15μgmL-1, 0.2-15μgmL-1, and 0.4-15μgmL-1 with detection limits of 0.03μgmL-1, 0.06μgmL-1, and 0.13μgmL-1, respectively. This method can be used for the determination of MTX in biological fluids. These results suggested that cucurbit[7]uril is a promising drug carrier for targeted MTX delivery and monitoring, with improved efficacy and reduced toxicity in normal tissues.

Abstract
The modulation in the photophysics of a pyrazoline dye 3-naphthyl-1-phenyl-5-(4-carboxyphenyl)-2-pyrazoline (NPCP), when it drifts from bulk water into the nanocages of aqueous cyclodextrin solutions was investigated. The intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) fluorescence band intensity was found to increase with a blue shift in the presence of cyclodextrins. The results from 1H NMR and 1HH COSY NMR spectral analysis clearly points out the position of pyrazoline ring inside the cavity and its role in complexation process. A quantitative assessment of the emission intensity data on Benesi-Hildebrand (B-H) equation along with ESI-MS spectra reveals the probable stoichiometry of NPCP-CD complexes. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies were conducted for β/γ cyclodextrin associated inclusion complexes of NPCP. The results obtained by computational studies are in good relation with the data obtained through experimental methods and both ascertain the encapsulation of NPCP into cyclodextrins.
