Abstract
A pyrene-based e xcited - state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) active probe PMHMP was synthesized, characterized, and employed for the ppb-level, dual-mode, and high-fidelity detection of Cu2+ (LOD: 7.8 ppb) and Zn2+ ions (LOD: 4.2 ppb) in acetonitrile medium. The colorless solution of PMHMP turned yellow upon the addition of Cu2+, suggesting its ratiometric, naked-eye sensing. On the contrary, Zn2+ ions displayed concentration-dependent fluorescence rise till a 0.5 mole fraction and subsequent quenching. Mechanistic investigations indicated the formation of a 1:2 exciplex (Zn2+:PMHMP) at a lower concentration of Zn2+, which eventually turned into a more stable 1:1 (Zn2+:PMHMP) complex with an additional amount of Zn2+ ions. However, in both cases, it was observed that the hydroxyl group and the nitrogen atom of the azomethine unit were involved in the metal ion coordination, which eventually altered the ESIPT emission. Furthermore, a green-fluorescent 2:1 PMHMP-Zn2+ complex was developed and additionally employed for the fluorimetric analysis of both Cu2+ and H2PO4 - ions. The Cu2+ ion, owing to its higher binding affinity for PMHMP, could replace the Zn2+ ion from the preformed complex. On the other hand, H2PO4 - formed a tertiary adduct with the Zn2+-complex, leading to a distinguishable optical signal. Furthermore, extensive and organized density functional theory calculations were performed to explore the ESIPT behavior of PMHMP and the geometrical and electronic properties of the metal complexes.

Abstract
A new promising fluorescent chemosensor based on a 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde skeleton was successfully synthesized through double imine formation as a yellow solid with an overall chemical yield of 63%. The compound showed UV/Visible maxima of at 394 nm in DMSO. Based on spectroscopic data of FTIR, ToF-HRMS, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR, the product was characterized as 1-((Z)-((E)-(3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybenzilydine)hydrazono)methyl)naphthalene-2-ol. Upon experimental study, the compound was confirmed as a highly selective and reversible off–on typical chemosensor against Al3+ with an emission quantum yield of 0.203 ± 0.009. The Job's plot analysis revealed that a highly stable 1:1 complex was formed with an association constant of 8.73 × 105 M−1. A pH-dependent study showed that the sensor was potentially applicable at physiological conditions (pH 7–8) in a mixture of DMSO : H2O (99 : 1, v/v). The LoD and LoQ of the chemosensor towards Al3+ in DMSO were found to be 0.04 and 0.14 μM respectively. Based on DFT and TD-DFT calculation (B3LYP hybrid method/basis set of 6-311+G(d,p)), the sensing mechanism of the chemosensor to the ion was discovered as inhibition of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). A new promising fluorescent chemosensor of Al3+ based on a 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde skeleton was successfully synthesized through double imine formation and demonstrated excellent sensing properties through the ESIPT inhibition mechanism.![]()

Abstract
Mass-spectrometry-based and X-ray fluorescence-based techniques have allowed the study of the distribution of Zn2+ ions at extracellular and intracellular levels over the past few years. However, there are some issues during purification steps, sample preparation, suitability for quantification, and the instruments' availability. Therefore, work on fluorescent sensors based on 8-aminoquinoline as tools to detect Zn2+ ions in environmental and biological applications has been popular. Introducing various carboxamide groups into an 8-aminoquinoline molecule to create 8-amidoquinoline derivatives to improve water solubility and cell membrane permeability is also a recent trend. This review aims to present a general overview of the fluorophore 8-aminoquinoline and its derivatives as Zn2+ receptors for zinc sensor probes. Various fluorescent chemosensor designs based on 8-amidoquinoline and their effectiveness and potential as a recognition probe for zinc analysis were discussed. Based on this review, it can be concluded that derivatives of 8-amidoquinoline have vast potential as functional receptors for zinc ions primarily because of their fast reactivity, good selectivity, and bio-compatibility, especially for biological applications. To better understand the Zn2+ ion fluorophores' function, diversity of the coordination complex and geometries need further studies. This review provides information in elucidating, designing, and exploring new 8-amidoquinoline derivatives for future studies for the improvement of chemosensors that are selective and sensitive to Zn2+.

Abstract
Fluorescent lanthanide complexes have favorable features for fluorescence-based sensors compared to organic fluorophores and quantum dots. They exhibit very long fluorescence lifetimes, sharp emission bands, and stability with respect to photo-bleaching, without blinking. However, these complexes are usually hydrophobic, and many are excited by UV light, making them hazardous and incompatible with aqueous environments and biological samples. In this work, the strong fluorescent Eu3+-induced aggregates of polysaccharides (EIAP) was used to improve their aqueous solubility, and to tune the appropriate excitation wavelength in the visible range for avoiding toxicity of UV light in biological applications. The complexes exhibit bright fluorescence with an excitation maximum in the visible range, near 405 nm. EIAP 3 also exhibit rapid quenching response in the presence of transition metal ions. This enables the detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+ below 1 ppm. The reverse of quenching response of copper by the addition of a chelating agent makes it possible to recover the fluorescence property. Successfully, the EIAP exhibit cytocompatibility with mammalian cells. Thus, these new polysaccharide-based complexes have the potential for rapid, sensitive and selective metal ion sensors for the environmental systems.

Abstract
A novel multi-response chemosensor L based on coumarin-chalcone-crown ether was designed and synthesized, which exhibited a high selectivity for the colorimetric detecting Al3+ and Cu2+ and fluorescent recognizing Al3+ and Mg2+ in ethanol. L can monitor Al3+ and Cu2+ via distinct color changes from a slight yellow to pink and to orange, respectively. The sensor L can also monitor Al3+ and Mg2+ by fluorescence emission responses at 592 nm and 547 nm with low detection limits of 0.31 μM and 0.23 μM, respectively. The selectivity of L toward Al3+, Cu2+ and Mg2+ was not interfered by a large number of coexisting ions and was found to be reversible. By means of spectrometric titration, Job's plot, mass spectrometry, 1H NMR titration and IR spectroscopy analysis, it was unanimously confirmed that the sensor L had a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 with Cu2+ and Mg2+, and 1:2 with Al3+. The order of the stability of the complexes formed by L and Al3+, Cu2+, Mg2+ was as follows: L-Al3+ > L-Cu2+ > L-Mg2+. At the same time, some possible bonding modes and sensing mechanisms were further proposed, and the optimized structure of the sensor L and its sensing mechanism for Al3+, Cu2+ and Mg2+ were confirmed by the calculations of DFT/B3LYP and TD-DFT methods in a suite of Gaussian 09 programs.

Abstract
A new bi-functional chemosensor 1 based on 3,5-dichlorosalicylaldehyde and 2-(methylthio)aniline has been synthesized. It can detect Cu2+ with a color change from pale yellow to dark yellow in aqueous solution. The selective mechanism of 1 for Cu2+ was proposed to be the enhancement of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) band, which was explained by theoretical calculations. The sensor 1 could be used to detect and quantify Cu2+ in water samples. In addition, the sensor 1 displayed "turn-on" fluorescence response only to Zn2+, based on an effect of chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). Therefore, 1 can serve as a 'single sensor for two different targets' with dual modes.
