Solution NMR methods for structural and thermodynamic investigation of nanoparticle adsorption equilibria

Characterization of dynamic processes occurring at the nanoparticle (NP) surface is crucial for developing new and more efficient NP catalysts and materials. Thus, a vast amount of research has been dedicated to developing techniques to characterize sorption equilibria. Over recent years, solution NMR spectroscopy has emerged as a preferred tool for investigating ligand-NP interactions. Indeed, due to its ability to probe exchange dynamics over a wide range of timescales with atomic resolution, solution NMR can provide structural, kinetic, and thermodynamic information on sorption equilibria involving multiple adsorbed species and intermediate states. In this contribution, we review solution NMR methods for characterizing ligand-NP interactions, and provide examples of practical applications using these methods as standalone techniques. In addition, we illustrate how the integrated analysis of several NMR datasets was employed to elucidate the role played by support-substrate interactions in mediating the phenol hydrogenation reaction catalyzed by ceria-supported Pd nanoparticles.

Multi-analyte High-Throughput Microplate-SERS Reader with Controllable Liquid Interfacial Arrays

High-throughput surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) reader, especially for liquid sample testing, is of great significance and huge demand in biology, environment, and other analytical fields. Inspired by the principle of microplate reader, herein, we developed a microplate-SERS reader for semiautomatic and high-throughput assays by virtue of three-dimensional liquid interfacial arrays (LIAs). For the first time, the formation of LIA in oil-in-water state, water-in-oil state, and two-dimensional plane state is realized by operating the hydrophilicity (contact angle) of the container. Through the force analysis of LIA, the effect of organic (O) phase density on the relative position of LIA was quantified. In addition, the optimized reader offers fast and continuous semiautomatic detection of 12 samples below 10 min with great signal reproducibility (calibration with the characteristic peak of O phase as the internal standard). The isolated wells in the microplate prevent analyte cross talk, allowing accurate quantification of each sample. Multiplex analysis capability highlights that this reader has the ability of rapid identification and quantification of samples containing various analytes and concentrations. The results demonstrate high-resolution dual and triple analyte detection with fully preserved signal and Raman features of individual analytes in a mixture, which implies that it also has excellent anticounterfeiting applications. This microplate-SERS reader combines the superior advantages of the LIA, microplate, and SERS techniques to retrieve the molecular vibrational fingerprints of various chemicals in complex media.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering from Dye Molecules in Silicon Nanowire Structures Decorated by Gold Nanoparticles

Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) prepared by metal-assisted chemical etching of crystalline silicon wafers followed by deposition of plasmonic gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) were explored as templates for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from probe molecules of Methylene blue and Rhodamine B. The filling factor by pores (porosity) of SiNW arrays was found to control the SERS efficiency, and the maximal enhancement was observed for the samples with porosity of 55%, which corresponded to dense arrays of SiNWs. The obtained results are discussed in terms of the electromagnetic enhancement of SERS related to the localized surface plasmon resonances in Au-NPs on SiNW's surfaces accompanied with light scattering in the SiNW arrays. The observed SERS effect combined with the high stability of Au-NPs, scalability, and relatively simple preparation method are promising for the application of SiNW:Au-NP hybrid nanostructures as templates in molecular sensorics.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering studies of Cu/Cu2O Core-shell NPs obtained by laser ablation

In order to perform SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering) measurements, spherical Cu/Cu₂O core-shell NPs with a rather rough rugged surface and well-defined crystallographic structures were fabricated using nanosecond Ce: Nd YAG pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL). Raman, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and TEM imaging of the prepared NPs reveal the existence of additional minority CuO phase, not determined earlier through XRD patterns. The SERS activity of Cu/Cu₂O core-shell NPs substrates was investigated by using crystal violet (CV) and methylene blue (MB) as the analyte molecules under 532 nm excitation wavelength irradiation. The effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) from Cu core contributing to the electromagnetic enhancement and Cu2O shell with a rough surface which itself contributes to chemical enhancement with adsorbed analyte molecule is due to a high overall SERS enhancement. The intensities of the totally and non-totally symmetric modes were used to calculate the degree of charge-transfer. The results demonstrate that the LSPR enhancement dominates charge-transfer resonance contribution in SERS of Cu/Cu2O-CV and Cu/Cu2O -MB systems. The reproducibility of the prepared SERS substrates was investigated and the SERS signals intensity variation was <28%.
