A benzo-15-crown-5-modifying ratiometric-absorption and fluorescent OFF-ON chemosensor for Cu(2.)

A Simple Schiff Base Probe for Quintuplicate-Metal Analytes with Four Emission-Wavelength Responses

A versatile mono-Schiff compound consisting of o-aminobenzene-hydroxyjulolidine (ABJ-MS) has been easily synthesized using a one-step reaction. ABJ-MS displays four diverse fluorescence responses to the addition of Zn2+/Al3+/Fe3+/Ag+, with the maximum fluorescence emission at 530 nm undergoing a hypsochromic shift to 502/490/440/430 nm, synchronously with the discriminating fluorescence enhancement being 10.6/22.8/2.6/7.1-fold, respectively. However, the addition of Cu2+ into ABJ-MS leads to an opposite behavior, namely, fluorescence quenching. Meanwhile, ABJ-MS also displays distinct absorption changes after adding these five metal ions due to different binding affinities between them and ABJ-MS, which gives ABJ-MS quite a versatile detecting nature for Cu2+/Zn2+/Al3+/Fe3+/Ag+. Moreover, ABJ-MS can mimic a series of versatile AND/OR/INH-consisting logic circuits on the basis of the Cu2+/Zn2+/Al3+/Fe3+/Ag+-mediated diverse optical responses. These will endow the smart ABJ-MS molecule and potential applications in the multi-analysis chemosensory and molecular logic material fields.

"Off-On" typed upconversion fluorescence resonance energy transfer probe for the determination of Cu2+ in tap water

Detection of copper plays a prominent role in the environmental protection and human health. Herein, we firstly design and construct an "off-on" upconversion fluorescence resonance energy transfer (UFRET) probe with low toxicity for the Cu²⁺ determination by using NaYF₄: Yb³⁺, Er³⁺ upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and Au NPs. UCNPs with positive charge and Au NPs with negative charge are respectively employed as the donor and acceptor, and bound together to form UFRET probe. The upconversion fluorescence quenching of UCNPs occurs by Au NPs through FRET (defined as "off" state). When Cu²⁺ exists in samples, Cu²⁺ reacts with 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) capped on the surface of Au NPs to make Au NPs detach from UCNPs, leading to the termination of FRET and the recovery of upconversion fluorescence (defined as "on" state). "Off-on" typed UFRET probe has excellent sensing performances, including linear range of 0.02-1 μM Cu²⁺ concentration, the limit of detection of 18.2 nM, high selectivity to Cu²⁺ and good recovery. The probe has been successfully used to determine Cu²⁺ in spiked tap water with satisfactory results. The probe will provide theoretical and technical support for the design of new sensitive heavy metal ion detection probe.

A Review of Off-On Fluorescent Nanoprobes: Mechanisms, Properties, and Applications

With the development of nanomaterials, fluorescent nanoprobes have attracted enormous attention in the fields of chemical sensing, optical materials, and biological detection. In this paper, the advantages of "off-on" fluorescent nanoprobes in disease detection, such as high sensitivity and short response time, are attentively highlighted. The characteristics, sensing mechanisms, and classifications of disease-related target substances, along with applications of these nanoprobes in cancer diagnosis and therapy are summarized systematically. In addition, the prospects of "off-on" fluorescent nanoprobe in disease detection are predicted. In this review, we presented information from all the papers published in the last 5 years discussing "off-on" fluorescent nanoprobes. This review was written in the hopes of being useful to researchers who are interested in further developing fluorescent nanoprobes. The characteristics of these nanoprobes are explained systematically, and data references and supports for biological analysis, clinical drug improvement, and disease detection have been provided appropriately.

An easy-to-synthesize multi-photoresponse smart sensor for rapidly detecting Zn2+ and quantifying Fe3+ based on the enol/keto binding mode

A readily available salicylaldazine-modified fluorene Schiff base (EASA-F) exhibits fast fluorescent OFF–ON response to Zn²⁺ and OFF–ON–OFF behavior to Fe³⁺ synchronously accompanied the diverse absorption-ratiometric and colorimetric changes.

A new fluorene-based Schiff-base as fluorescent chemosensor for selective detection of Cr3+ and Al3

2-((9H-fluoren-2-ylimino) methyl)phenol (F3) was synthesized by condensation reaction of 9H-fluoren-2-amine and 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde in EtOH and characterized by its melting point, ¹H-,¹³C NMR and molecular mass. F3 exhibits a high selectivity for detection of Cr³⁺ and Al³⁺ ions as a fluorescent chemosensor and showed a single emission band at 536nm upon excitation at 333nm according to fluorescence emission studies. The addition of Cr³⁺ and Al³⁺ make a significant increase in fluorescent intensity at 536nm in CH₃CN, while other metal ions have almost no influence on the fluorescence. The fluorescence enhancement was attributed to the inhibited CN isomerization and the obstructed excited state intra-molecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of compound F3. Job's plot and DFT calculations data showed that the binding stoichiometries of F3 with Cr³⁺ and Al³⁺ are 2:1. The association constants (K_a) for Cr³⁺ and Al³⁺ were calculated and found to be 8.33×10⁴M^-1 and 5.44×10⁴M^-1, respectively. The detection limits were also calculated for Cr³⁺ and Al³⁺ and found to be 2.5×10^-7mol/L and 3.1×10^-7mol/L, respectively.

Recent Advances in Macrocyclic Fluorescent Probes for Ion Sensing

Small-molecule fluorescent probes play a myriad of important roles in chemical sensing. Many such systems incorporating a receptor component designed to recognise and bind a specific analyte, and a reporter or transducer component which signals the binding event with a change in fluorescence output have been developed. Fluorescent probes use a variety of mechanisms to transmit the binding event to the reporter unit, including photoinduced electron transfer (PET), charge transfer (CT), Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET), excimer formation, and aggregation induced emission (AIE) or aggregation caused quenching (ACQ). These systems respond to a wide array of potential analytes including protons, metal cations, anions, carbohydrates, and other biomolecules. This review surveys important new fluorescence-based probes for these and other analytes that have been reported over the past five years, focusing on the most widely exploited macrocyclic recognition components, those based on cyclam, calixarenes, cyclodextrins and crown ethers; other macrocyclic and non-macrocyclic receptors are also discussed.
