Abstract
Encapsulating curcumin (CUR) in nanocarriers such as liposomes, polymeric micelles, silica nanoparticles, protein-based nanocarriers, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanocrystals could be efficient for a variety of industrial and biomedical applications. Nanofibers containing CUR represent a stable polymer-drug carrier with excellent surface-to-volume ratios for loading and cell interactions, tailored porosity for controlled CUR release, and diverse properties that fit the requirements for numerous applications. Despite the mentioned benefits, electrospinning is not capable of producing fibers from multiple polymers and biopolymers, and the product's effectiveness might be affected by various machine- and material-dependent parameters like the voltage and the flow rate of the electrospinning process. This review delves into the current and innovative recent research on nanofibers containing CUR and their various applications.

Abstract
PVA/CC/CUR/PL composite films containing curcumin (CUR) and ε-polylysine (PL) were prepared by casting and chemical grafting methods to address the threat to food spoilage. Morphological analysis showed that the grafting of CUR and PL resulted in a rough cross-section of the polymer matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the grafting of CUR and PL into the polymer matrix via esterification and amidation reactions, respectively. Thermal weight loss analysis showed that grafting process positively improved the thermal stability. The PVA/CC/CUR/PL films exhibited strong bactericidal activity, reaching 99.0% and 99.8% for Pseudomonas lundensis and Shewanella putrefaciens, respectively. After 8 days of storage, the total number of colonies and the TVB-N content in the PVA/CC/CUR/PL group decreased by 1.51 lg CFU/g and 13.77 mg/100 g, respectively. Therefore, PVA/CC/CUR/PL films are considered as a promising bactericidal material with good mechanical properties, functionality, and other excellent characteristics.

Abstract
Curcumin is the primary polyphenol in turmeric's curcuminoid class. It has a wide range of therapeutic applications, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, antibacterial, and anticancer effects against various cancers, but has poor solubility and low bioavailability. Objective: To improve curcumin's bioavailability, plasma concentration, and cellular permeability processes. The nanocurcumin approach over curcumin has been proven appropriate for encapsulating or loading curcumin (nanocurcumin) to increase its therapeutic potential. Conclusion: Though incorporating curcumin into nanocurcumin form may be a viable method for overcoming its intrinsic limitations, and there are reasonable concerns regarding its toxicological safety once it enters biological pathways. This review article mainly highlights the therapeutic benefits of nanocurcumin over curcumin.

Abstract
Consumer awareness on the side effects of chemical preservatives has increased the demand for natural preservation technologies. An efficient and sustainable alternative to current conventional preservation techniques should guarantee food safety and retain its quality with minimal side effects. Photosensitization, utilizing light and a natural photosensitizer, has been postulated as a viable and green alternative to the current conventional preservation techniques. The potential of curcumin as a natural photosensitizer is reviewed in this paper as a practical guide to develop a safe and effective decontamination tool for industrial use. The fundamentals of the photosensitization mechanism are discussed, with the main emphasis on the natural photosensitizer, curcumin, and its application to inactivate microorganisms as well as to enhance the shelf life of foods. Photosensitization has shown promising results in inactivating a wide spectrum of microorganisms with no reported microbial resistance due to its particular lethal mode of targeting nucleic acids. Curcumin as a natural photosensitizer has recently been investigated and demonstrated efficacy in decontamination and delaying spoilage. Moreover, studies have shown the beneficial impact of an appropriate encapsulation technique to enhance the cellular uptake of photosensitizers, and therefore, the phototoxicity. Further studies relating to improved delivery of natural photosensitizers with inherent poor solubility should be conducted. Also, detailed studies on various food products are warranted to better understand the impact of encapsulation on curcumin photophysical properties, photo-driven release mechanism, and nutritional and organoleptic properties of treated foods.

Abstract
Introduction: Curcumin is an important bioactive compound present in Curcuma longa, and is well known for its bioactivities such as anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, antiparasitic and antioxidant activity. The use of curcumin is limited owing to its poor solubility in water, fast degradation, and low bioavailability. This problem can be solved by using nano-curcumin, which is soluble in water and enhances its activity against various microbial pathogens and parasites.Areas covered: We have reviewed curcumin, curcumin-loaded nanoparticles and their activities against various pathogenic microbes (antifungal, antiviral and antiprotozoal) and parasites, as curcumin has already demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. It has also inhibited biofilm formation by various bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The antimicrobial activity of curcumin can be increased in the presence of light radiation due to its photo-excitation. Further, it has been found that the activity of curcumin nanoparticles is enhanced when used in combination with antibiotics. Finally, we discussed the toxicity and safety issues of curcumin.Expert opinion: Since many microbial pathogens have developed resistance to antibiotics, the combination of curcumin with different nanoparticles will prove to be a boon for their treatment. Moreover, curcumin and curcumin-loaded nanoparticles can also be used against various parasites.

Abstract
PURPOSE The main aim in periodontitis treatment is to remove supragingival and subgingival biofilm. Mechanical treatment to eliminate pathogenic bacteria is limited by morphological conditions on the root surface. This study assessed the antibacterial effectiveness of different laser-based photochemical systems, particularly a novel curcumin-based option. METHODS Ninety-one titanium bars were inoculated with an artificial biofilm of common pathogenic periodontal bacteria and inserted into an artificial periodontal pocket model. The following groups (n = 13) were tested: 1, curcumin solution plus SLB laser irradiation (C + L; 445 nm, 0.6 W, 25% duty cycle, 100 Hz, 10 s); 2, curcumin solution (Cur); 3, dimethyl sulfoxide solution (DMSO); 4, SiroLaser Blue (SLB) - laser irradiation (445 nm, 0.6 W, 25% duty cycle, 100 Hz, 10 s); 5, antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT); 6, antimicrobial photothermal therapy (aPTT); 7, control. The samples were stored in Eppendorf tubes and analyzed microbiologically using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The main parameter for analyzing group differences was the total bacterial load. Statistical analysis was performed with nonparametric methods. RESULTS Statistically significant reductions in bacterial count were observed in all experimental groups (p < 0.05). The mean percentage reductions were as follows: SLB, 95.03%; aPDT, 83.91%; DMSO, 95.69%; C + L, 97.15%. No statistically significant differences in bacteria reduction were observed for laser alone (SLB), DMSO, or curcumin with or without additional laser irradiation. CONCLUSIONS The greatest antibacterial efficacy was observed in samples treated with aPTT. Using curcumin as a photosensitizing agent for 445 nm laser irradiation did not result in improved antibacterial effectiveness in comparison with laser alone.

Abstract
AIM There is an urgent need to develop alternative antimicrobial agents and, one of which is via the use of nanotechnology. Green synthetic routes are recently being replaced for nanoparticles preparation. Methods results: Silver-curcumin nanoconjugates (Ag-CurNCs) were prepared in an eco-friendly method. The prepared nanomaterials were characterized and the photostability was studied under the influence of UV irradiation. Results showed that, the conjugation between curcumin and silver in the nanoform improve the photostability of curcumin. Cytotoxicity was studied on different skin cell lines, and antibacterial activity was investigated against Escherichia coli. Results revealed the antibacterial activity of the prepared nanoconjugates (Ag-CurNCs) with minimal toxicity to skin cells. CONCLUSION Silver nanoparticles improve the photostability and antibacterial activity of curcumin, while curcumin helps in preparing biocompatible silver nanoparticles.
