One-pot fabrication of FRET-based fluorescent probe for detecting copper ion and sulfide anion in 100% aqueous media

Design and Application of Cu2+ Fluorescent Sensor Based on Carbazole Derivatives

A novel fluorescent sensor for the detection of Cu2+ was developed based on carbazole derivatives. After the addition of Cu2+, the sensor exhibited obvious fluorescence quenching phenomenon, and the optical signal variation also enabled the sensor to quantitatively analyze Cu2+ due to the formation of a stable 1:1 metal-ligand complex in a short time. In addition, the sensor possessed chemical reversibility and pH stability. The cell imaging and zebra fish experiments also verified its application value in biological system.

Facile preparation of dihydrolipoic acid-stabilized red-emitting silver nanoclusters as a sensitive fluorometric probe for sulfide ions detection

In this work, we report a smartphone-integrated paper-based sensor for the determination of sulfide ions (S2-) using water-soluble dihydrolipoic acid stabilized silver nanoclusters (DHLA-AgNCs) as a nanoprobe. The optical properties of red emitting fluorescent DHLA-AgNCs was confirmed by UV-visible, steady state flourometric spectroscopic studies. The HR-TEM analysis revealed that the morphology of DHLA-AgNCs was quasi spherical with a grain size of ∼ 5.2 nm. The DHLA-AgNCs exhibited bright red luminescence with strong emission band centered at 650 nm upon the excitation at 420 nm. The excellent fluorescence property of DHLA-AgNCs was further utilized for fluorometric determination of S2- ions. The DHLA-AgNCs can be effectively quenched by increasing concentration of S2- ions owing to the formation of Ag2S complex. The DHLA-AgNCs probe could detect S2- ions preferentially even in the presence of other possible interfering anions with a limit of detection of 32.71 nM. In addition, the proposed technique was effectively used to detect S2- ions in environmental water samples such as tap and drinking water. The detect S2- ions detection was assay and showed good agree compared with the conventional methylene blue approach and showed comparable results. Moreover, a smartphone-paper-based detection assay was developed using the DHLA-AgNCs probe for highly selective and sensitive determination of S2- ions.

Microwave-assisted synthesis for a highly selective rhodamine 6G-derived fluorescent sensor and bioimaging

A new rhodamine 6G derivative R1 has been synthesized by condensation of rhodamine hydrazide and 6-hydroxymethyl-pyridine using microwave-assisted reaction. Naked-eye colorimetric and photo physical studies show the synthesized compound is selectively sensing Cu2+ in CH3CN/H2O (9:1, v/v) solution. Upon coordination with Cu2+ ion, the spirolactam of R1 is opened, which results in a formation of highly fluorescent complex and change in color of the solution. The Job's plot indicates 1:2 binding stoichiometry between Cu2+ ion and R1. Limit of detection for Cu2+ was determined to be 1.23 μM. The sensor was successfully applied to fluorescent imaging of Cu2+ ion in living cells.

Synthesis and application of CdS nanoparticles-decorated core-shell Ag@Ni nanohybrids for visible-light spectrophotometric assay of sulfide in aqueous sample

Novel Ag@Ni nanosphere decorated with CdS NPs (Ag@Ni-CdS NCs) was synthesized by one step chemical synthesis method. The fabricated NCs were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier transfer infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta sizer and particle size analyzer. TEM and XRD confirmed the Ag in core and Ni in shell for the effective formation of Ag@Ni core shell nanosphere. EDAX and XPS spectra of NCs confirms the formation of Ag@Ni-CdS NCs. Zeta potential and particle size of the NCs was found to be 29.5 ± 1.5 mV and 24 ± 1 nm respectively. The complete loss in the peak intensity of Ag@Ni-CdS NCs (localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)) at ∼410 nm in presence of S^2- ions was observed which indicates its selective detection towards S^2- ions. The sulfide ion sensing by Ag@Ni-CdS NCs was due to the successive oxidation of Ag results in the formulation of Ag²⁺ ions in the system, which causes the diminishing of LSPR band of NCs. The limit of detection (LOD) of S^2- ions by Ag@Ni-CdS NCs was calculated to be of 2.66 nM. The combination of CdS NPs with core-shell Ag@Ni nanosphere guides a promising strategy for S^2- ions detection from environmental polluted samples.

Ag0 decorated Cr2S3 NPs embedded on PVP matrix: A colorimetric probe for selective and rapid detection of sulphide ions from environmental samples

Globally, the environmental pollution is one of the major issues causing toxicity towards human and aquatic life. We have developed a facile and innovative sensing approach for detection of sulphide ions (S^2-) present in the aqueous media using Ag⁰ decorated Cr₂S₃ NPs embedded on PVP matrix (Ag/Cr₂S₃-PVP). Based on the SPR phenomena, the detection of S^2- ions was established. The nanohybrid was characterized using various techniques such as UV-vis spectrophotometer, High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The yellowish colour of Ag/Cr₂S₃-PVP nanohybrid turned to brown colour in presence of S^2- ions. The selectivity and sensitivity of the prepared probe was studied against the other interfering metal ions. In addition, the effect of different concentration of S^2- ions in the nanohybrid solution was investigated and the Limit of detection (LOD) was found to be 6.6 nM. The good linearity was found over the range of 10 nM to 100 μM with R² value of 0.981. The paper strip based probe was developed for rapid onsite monitoring of S^2- ions. The proposed method is found to be cost-effective, rapid, and simple. We have validated the practical applicability of the prepared probe for determining the concentration of S^2- ions in real water samples.

Ratiometric fluorescence detection of sulfide ions based on lanthanide coordination polymer using guanosine diphosphate as ligand

The efficiency of energy transfer from guanine nucleotide to terbium ion (Tb³⁺) is affected by the phosphate group significantly. Compared with the biomolecules 5'-GMP (guanosine monophosphate), guanosine diphosphate (GDP) exhibits better sensitize ability to Tb³⁺ ions luminescence. Assisted with the carboxycoumarin ligand, we synthesized a more stable optical Coumarin@GDP-Tb polymer with the characteristic emission peaks located on 440 nm and 545 nm in this work. The Coumarin@GDP-Tb polymer is not only rich in metal binding sites, but also maintains a moderate ionic binding force, which helps metal ions to bind or leave it easily. Experiment result shows that Coumarin@GDP-Tb polymer has the appropriate binding force for Fe²⁺ ions, which can be destroyed by sulfur ions (S^2-) as the formation of FeS precipitation. Based on this, Coumarin@GDP-Tb was designed as the ratio fluorescence probe for sulfur ions detection, where the fluorescence at 545 nm can be selectively quenched by Fe²⁺ ions, while that at 440 nm was unaffected, in the presence of S^2- ions, the quenched fluorescence can be recovered remarkably. With the increasing S^2- ions from 0.1-45 μM, the ratio of fluorescence intensity at 545 nm to 440 nm (F₅₄₅/F₄₄₀) is linear to S^2- concentration, and the detection limit of S^2- was calculated to be 0.073 μM. Contrast to those fluorescence probes with single wavelength emission, Coumarin@GDP-Tb displays a comparable sensitivity, the introduced self-adjust wavelength improved the detection accuracy efficiently. The above 98.1 % recovery rates of S^2- ions in the actual water sample demonstrated the practicability of Coumarin@GDP-Tb fluorescence probe.

Direct and sensitive detection of sulfide ions based on one-step synthesis of ionic liquid functionalized fluorescent carbon nanoribbons

Despite widely reported fluorescence sensors for cations, direct detection of anions is nevertheless still rare. In this work, ionic liquid-functionalized fluorescent carbon nanoribbons (IL-CNRs) are one-step synthesized and serve as the fluorescent probes for direct and sensitive detection of sulfide ions (S²⁻). The IL-CNRs are synthesized based on electrochemical exfoliation of graphite rods in a water-IL biphasic system. The as-prepared IL-CNRs exhibit uniform structure, high crystallinity, strong blue fluorescence (absolute photoluminescence quantum yield of 11.4%), and unique selectivity towards S²⁻. Based on the fluorescence quenching of IL-CNRs by S²⁻, a fluorescence sensor is developed for direct, rapid and sensitive detection of S²⁻ in the range of 100 nM to 1 μM and 1–300 μM with a low detection limit (LOD, 85 nM). Moreover, detection of S²⁻ in a real sample (tap water) is also demonstrated.

Sensitive detection of sulfide ions is realized based on one-step synthesis of ionic liquid functionalized fluorescent carbon nanoribbons.

Multifunctional peptide-based fluorescent chemosensor for detection of Hg2+ , Cu2+ and S2- ions

A novel multifunctional fluorescent peptide sensor based on pentapeptide dansyl-Gly-His-Gly-Gly-Trp-COOH (D-P5) was designed and synthesized efficiently using Fmoc solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). This fluorescent peptide sensor shows selective and sensitive responses to Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ among 17 metal ions and six anions studied in N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N-2-ethane sulfonic acid (HEPES) buffer solution. The peptide probe differentiates Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ ions by a 'turn-on' response to Hg²⁺ and a 'turn-off' response to Cu²⁺ . Upon addition of Hg²⁺ or Cu²⁺ ions, the sensor displayed an apparent color change that was visible under an ultraviolet lamp to the naked eye. The limits of detection (LOD) of DP-5 were 25.0 nM for Hg²⁺ and 85.0 nM for Cu²⁺ ; the detection limits for Cu²⁺ were much lower than the drinking water maximum contaminant levels set out by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). It is noteworthy that both D-P5-Hg and D-P5-Cu systems were also used to detect S^2- successfully based on the formation of ternary complexes. The LODs of D-P5-Hg and D-P5-Cu systems for S^2- were 217.0 nM and 380.0 nM, respectively. Furthermore, the binding stoichiometry, binding affinity and pH sensitivity of the probe for Hg²⁺ and Cu²⁺ were investigated. This study gives new possibilities for using a short fluorescent peptide sensor for multifunctional detection, especially for anions.

Sensing of heavy metal ions by intrinsic TMV coat protein fluorescence

We propose the use of a cysteine mutant of TMV coat protein as a signal transducer for the selective sensing and quantification of the heavy metal ions, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Ni²⁺ based on intrinsic tryptophan quenching. TMV coat protein is inexpensive, can be mass-produced since it is expressed and extracted from E-coli. It also displays several different functional groups, enabling a wide repertoire of bioconjugation chemistries; thus it can be easily integrated into functional devices. In addition, TMV-ion interactions have been widely reported and utilized for metallization to generate organic-inorganic hybrid composite novel materials. Building on these previous observations, we herein determine, for the first time, the TMV-ion binding constants assuming the static fluorescence quenching model. We also show that by comparing TMV-ion interactions between native and denatured coat protein, we can distinguish between chemically similar heavy metal ions such as cadmium and zinc ions.
