Chain length effects on the vibrational structure and molecular interactions in the liquid normal alkyl alcohols

Spectrally combined four-diode-pumped femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser with 16.3 nJ pulse and its application to video-rate coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectro-microscopy

We demonstrate the generation of high-energy femtosecond pulses by a spectrally combined four-diode-pumped Ti:sapphire laser with semi-conductor saturable absorber mirror mode locking. To achieve energy scaling, the laser cavity was extended using a design based on the Herriott multipass cell. The laser operates at a 17.5 MHz repetition rate and generates pulses with energies as high as 16.3 nJ and 80 fs in duration. The signal-to-noise ratio at the fundamental frequency showed an extinction ratio of >50 dB relative to the carrier. This compact single laser was applied to video-rate forward and backward coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering spectro-microscopy with a pixel dwell time of 122 ns, which is the lowest dwell time ever achieved, to the best of our knowledge.

Cluster Formation through Hydrogen Bond Bridges across Chloride Anions in a Hydroxyl-Functionalized Ionic Liquid

Several recent studies of hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) have shown that cation-cation interactions can be dominating these materials at the molecular level when the anion involved is weakly interacting. The hydrogen bonds between the like ions led to the formation of interesting chain-like, ring-like, or distinct dimeric (i. e. two ion pairs) supermolecular clusters. In the present work, vibrational spectroscopy (ATR-IR and Raman) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the hydroxyl-functionalized imidazolium ionic liquid C₂ OHmimCl indicate that anion-cation hydrogen bonding interactions are dominating, leading to the formation of distinct dimeric ion pair clusters. In this arrangement, the Cl^- anions function as a bridge between the cations by establishing bifurcated hydrogen bonds with the OH group of one cation and the C(2)-H of another cation. Cation-cation interactions, on the other hand, do not play a significant role in the observed clusters.

Principal component analysis to enhance enantioselective Raman spectroscopy

Enantioselective Raman (esR) spectroscopy is an innovative technique with a high potential for online process monitoring in chiral media, e.g. in the pharmaceutical industry. A prerequisite for an effective application is to combine the experimental approach with suitable concepts for data analysis. In this work, we present a chemometric approach to analyze the esR spectra recorded in an automatized polarization-resolved Raman set-up. It is demonstrated that the proposed method is capable of distinguishing between the enantiomers of the chiral alcohol 4-methylpentan-2-ol in a fully unsupervised fashion. Furthermore, it is shown that the difficulty of facing only small intensity differences between the esR spectra of the enantiomers can be overcome by feeding difference spectra between the pure enantiomers and the racemate into the principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm. The enantiomers are clearly discriminable along the first principal component.

The Danger of Relying on Database Spectra

With the availability of easy-to-use commercial instrumentation for infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, the number of users is growing very fast. Even in labs in which no personnel with experience in spectroscopy is around, spectra can be recorded and analyzed. However, for an inexperienced person it is virtually impossible to check whether a spectrum is plausible. In this Note, it is demonstrated that even comparing an experimental spectrum with data from a database may lead to significant errors. The vibrational spectrum of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is presented as an example.

Enantioselective Raman spectroscopy (esR) for distinguishing between the enantiomers of 2-butanol

The first experimental application of enantioselective Raman spectroscopy (esR) is demonstrated using the example of the chiral alcohol 2-butanol. Samples of the neat enantiomers and the racemic mixture were analyzed in a self-built Raman set-up. The Raman spectrum allows the discrimination of the chemical species. It is shown that the optical rotation of a Raman peak with a small depolarization ratio can be measured. In addition, without any sample modification, e.g. chiral solvent, the enantiomers are distinguishable at a suitable half-wave retarder angle detecting only the vertically polarized component of the Raman signal.

The solvent effects on dimethyl phthalate investigated by FTIR characterization, solvent parameter correlation and DFT computation

This study set out with the aim of investigating the solvent effects on dimethyl phthalate (DMP) using FTIR characterization, solvent parameter correlation and DFT calculation. DMP exposed to 17 organic solvents manifested varying shift in the carbonyl stretching vibration frequency (ν_CO). Non-alkanols induced Band I and alkanols produced Band I and Band II. Through correlating the ν_CO with the empirical solvent scales including acceptor parameter (AN), Schleyer's linear free energy parameter (G), and linear free salvation energy relationships (LSER), Band I was mainly ascribed to non-specific effects from either non-alkanols or alkanol polymers ((alkanol)_n). ν_CO of the latter indicated minor red shift and less variability compared to the former. An assumption was made and validated about the sequestering of hydroxyl group by the bulky hydrophobic chain in (alkanol)_n, creating what we refer to as "screening effects". Ab initio calculation, on the other hand, provided insights for possible hydrogen binding between DMP and (ethanol)_n or between ethanol monomers. The two components of Band I observed in inert solvents were assigned to the two CO groups adopting differentiated conformations. This in turn prompted our consideration that hydrogen binding was highly selective in favor of lowly associated (alkanol)_n and the particular CO group having relatively less steric hindrance and stronger electron-donating capacity. Band II was therefore believed to derive from hydrogen-bond interactions mainly in manner of 1:1 and 1:2 DMP-(alkanol)_n complexes.
