Photoelectron spectra and biological activity of cinnamic acid derivatives revisited

Elucidating the photoprotective properties of natural UV screening agents: ZEKE-PFI spectroscopy of methyl sinapate

As a prominent derivative of a natural sunscreen, methyl sinapate is an ideal candidate to provide fundamental insight into strategies on how to come to a rational design of artificial sunscreen filters with improved photoprotective properties. Here, static and time-resolved Zero Kinetic Energy-Pulsed Field Ionization (ZEKE-PFI) photoelectron spectroscopy has been used to study the spectroscopy and decay pathways of its electronically excited states. We find that different conformers are subject to distinct structural changes upon electronic excitation, and trace the structural changes that occur upon excitation back to the character of the LUMO. Ionization efficiency spectra in combination with pump-probe ZEKE-PFI spectra are consistent with the conclusion that the long-lived electronically excited state observed in the decay of the lowest excited singlet state is the lowest excited triplet state. Concurrently with providing information on the electronically excited states, the studies allow for a detailed characterization of the spectroscopic properties of the ground state of the radical ion, which is important in the context of the use of cinnamates in nature as antioxidants. Our studies determine the adiabatic ionization energies of the syn/cis, anti/cis and anti/trans conformers as 60 291.1 ± 0.5, 60 366.9 ± 0.5 and 60 503.9 ± 1.0 cm^-1, respectively, and provide accurate vibrational fequencies of low-frequency modes of the molecular ion in its electronic ground state. Finally, the studies emphasize the important role of vibrational and electronic autoionization processes that start to dominate the ionization dynamics in non-rigid molecules of the present size.

Cinnamic Acid Derivatives and Their Biological Efficacy

The role played by cinnamic acid derivatives in treating cancer, bacterial infections, diabetes and neurological disorders, among many, has been reported. Cinnamic acid is obtained from cinnamon bark. Its structure is composed of a benzene ring, an alkene double bond and an acrylic acid functional group making it possible to modify the aforementioned functionalities with a variety of compounds resulting in bioactive agents with enhanced efficacy. The nature of the substituents incorporated into cinnamic acid has been found to play a huge role in either enhancing or decreasing the biological efficacy of the synthesized cinnamic acid derivatives. Some of the derivatives have been reported to be more effective when compared to the standard drugs used to treat chronic or infectious diseases in vitro, thus making them very promising therapeutic agents. Compound 20 displayed potent anti-TB activity, compound 27 exhibited significant antibacterial activity on S. aureus strain of bacteria and compounds with potent antimalarial activity are 35a, 35g, 35i, 36i, and 36b. Furthermore, compounds 43d, 44o, 55g–55p, 59e, 59g displayed potent anticancer activity and compounds 86f–h were active against both hAChE and hBuChE. This review will expound on the recent advances on cinnamic acid derivatives and their biological efficacy.

Hybrid cis-stilbene Molecules: Novel Anticancer Agents

The growing interest in anticancer hybrids in the last few years has resulted in a great number of reports on hybrid design, synthesis and bioevaluation. Many novel multi-target-directed drug candidates were synthesized, and their biological activities were evaluated. For the design of anticancer hybrid compounds, the molecules of stilbenes, aromatic quinones, and heterocycles (benzimidazole, imidazole, pyrimidine, pyridine, pyrazole, quinoline, quinazoline) were applied. A distinct group of hybrids comprises the molecules built with natural compounds: Resveratrol, curcumin, coumarin, and oleanolic acid. In this review, we present the studies on bioactive hybrid molecules of a well-known tubulin polymerization inhibitor, combretastatin A-4 and its analogs with other pharmacologically active entities. The mechanism of anticancer activity of selected hybrids is discussed considering the structure-activity relationship.

Surface analysis of 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole adsorbed on copper by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

A detailed analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is presented for the system of 2-mercapto-1-methylimidazole (MMeI) adsorbed on Cu in 3wt% NaCl solution. High-resolution and survey XPS spectra and XPS-excited Auger L₃M_4,5M_4,5 spectra were analysed in detail. Surface analysis revealed that the MMeI molecules do not lie flat on the surface via π-d interactions, but adsorb on the surface through an N-S-bridge configuration. Moreover, the characteristic Cu(I)-MMeI connection fingerprint, which is usually observed for these kinds of molecules, was not observed. Tougaard thickness analysis showed that a relatively thin MMeI surface layer (0.3-0.6nm) is formed on the Cu substrate after 1h of immersion. Herein, MMeI is considered as a Cu corrosion inhibitor for chloride solution for short-term immersion periods. Based on the XPS analysis, an explanation of why MMeI is not effective for longer-term immersion periods, compared with similar compounds, is given.
