Abstract
In this study, an easily synthesizable Schiff base probe TQSB having a quinoline fluorophore is demonstrated as a fluorescent and colorimetric turn-on sensor for Al3+ ions in a semi-aqueous medium (CH3CN/water; 4 : 1; v/v). Absorption, emission and colorimetric studies clearly indicated that TQSB exhibited a high selectivity toward Al3+, as observed from its excellent binding constant (Kb = 3.8 × 106 M-1) and detection limit (7.0 nM) values. TQSB alone was almost non-fluorescent in nature; however, addition of Al3+ induced intense fluorescence at 414 nm most probably due to combined CHEF (chelation-enhanced fluorescence) and restricted PET effects. The sensing mechanism was established via Job's plot, NMR spectroscopy, ESI-mass spectrometry, and density functional theory (DFT) analyses. Furthermore, to evaluate the applied potential of probe TQSB, its sensing ability was studied in real samples such as soil samples and Al3+-containing Digene gastric tablets as well as on low-cost filter paper strips. Fluorescence microscopy imaging experiments further revealed that TQSB can be used as an effective probe to detect intracellular Al3+ in live cells with no cytotoxicity.

Abstract
A quinoline-derived Schiff base QnSb has been synthesized for fluorescent and colorimetric recognition of Al3+ ions in a semi-aqueous medium. The compound QnSb has been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H/13C NMR, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectral techniques. The crystal structure of the QnSb was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis. Notably, almost non-fluorescent QnSb served as a 'turn on' responsive probe for Al3+ by inducing a remarkable fluorescence enhancement at 422 nm when excited at 310 nm. The probe QnSb exhibited high selectivity for Al3+ in CH3CN/H2O (4:1, v/v) solution over several competing metal ions (e.g., Mg2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Fe3+/2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Sn2+, and Hg2+). The limit of detection (LoD) was computed as low as 15.8 nM which is significantly lower than the permissible limit set by WHO for Al3+ ions in drinking water. A 1:1 binding stoichiometry of complex QnSb-Al3+ was established with the help of Job's plot, ESI-MS, NMR and DFT analyses. Based on its remarkable sensing ability, the probe QnSb was utilized to establish molecular logic gates, and the fluorescence detection of Al3+ could clearly be demonstrated on the filter paper test strips.

Abstract
The development of high-selective chemosensors for trace Al3+ detection in the ecosystem is crucially importance due to its detrimental effects. In this work, a simple Schiff-base fluorescent probe NPP derived from naphthalimide and picolinohydrazide was rationally designed and prepared for efficient detection of Al3+. NPP exhibited prominent sensing behaviors toward Al3+ with low detection limit (LOD) (39 nM), rapid response time (1 min), strong binding affinity (4.02 × 104), good anti-interference characteristics and visual detection. Binding ratio of NPP-Al3+ complex was determined to be 1:1 by Job's plot analysis. In addition, the chelation mechanism of NPP with Al3+ ions was proposed and substantiated by the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), IR spectrum and 1H NMR titration experiments. Furthermore, this "signal-on" probe NPP was efficiently utilized as a promising indicator for Al3+ detection in environmental and biological samples.

Abstract
A simple fluorescent chemosensor 5-(4-methylphenyl)-3-(5-methylfuran-2-yl)-1-phenyl-4, 5-dihydro-1H-pyrazole (PY) has been synthesized for the detection of Cd2+ ion.The fluorescent probe PY shows high selectivity for Cd2+in the presence of othermetal ions (Co2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Mn2+, Zn2+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Ni2+, and Al3+). The fluorescence intensity of the PY has been strongly quenched with increasing concentration of Cd2+ (0-0.9 μM)via photoinduced electron transfer mechanism. The binding constant of Cd2+ to PY for the 1:1 complex isfound to be 5.3 × 105 M-1with a detection limit of 0.09 μM. The chemosensor was successfully applied for determination of Cd2+ in different water samples (tap, river, and bottled water) showing good recovery values in the range of 94.8-101.7% with RSD less than 3%. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were also performed to investigate electronic and spectral characteristics which are quite agreeable with the experimental value. The results show that the synthesized fluorescent chemosensor shows good selectivity towards Cd2+ and can be readily applied for the detection of Cd2+ in real samples including water samples.

Abstract
Herein, a novel Schiff base fluorescent probe NIQ based on naphthalimide and iso-quinoline units has been readily prepared for the selective detection of Al3+ ions. The obviously visible color changes and prominent fluorescence enhancement were observed upon the addition of Al3+ to NIQ, which could be attributed to the complexation of NIQ with Al3+ and thus leading to the inhibition of photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and the chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) progress. The limit of detection (LOD) was 52 nM that was far below the standard recommended by the WHO. Binding ratio (1:1) of NIQ with Al3+ ions was supported by Job's plot. The binding constant of NIQ for Al3+ were calculated to be 3.27 × 105 M-1 on the basis of benesi-Hildebrand plot. The plausible binding mechanism for NIQ towards Al3+ ions was evidenced by the density functional theory (DFT) and 1H NMR titration experiment. Furthermore, this "turn-on" probe NIQ has been successfully applied as a biomarker for imaging the Al3+ ions in living cells.

Abstract
A new efficient Schiff base sensor SB3 for fluorescent and colorimetric "naked-eye" "turn-on" sensing of cyanide anion (CN-) with excellent sensitivity and selectivity was developed. The 4,4'-(perfluoropropane-2,2-diyl)bisphenol group and two phenyl groups were covalently linked by two C = N bonds to extend the conjugation length. The four hydroxyl groups can improve the water solubility of the SB3 sensor. The SB3 sensor exhibited high specificity towards CN- by interrupting its intramolecular charge transfer, resulting in a color change and remarkable "turn-on" green fluorescence emission. The sensing mechanism is caused by the nucleophilic addition of CN- toward imine groups of the SB3 sensor, leading to breaks of the conjugation, fluorescent spectral changes, and color change. It was confirmed by 1H NMR titration and Mass spectra. The detection limits for CN- and Al3+obtained by fluorescence spectrum are 0.80 µM and 0.25 µM, respectively. The SB3 sensor can act as an efficient chemical sensor for detecting the CN- and Al3+ ions under common environmental and physiological conditions (pH 5-12). Besides, the sensor can also detect CN- in food materials (such as sprouting potatoes and cassava flour) and imaging CN-in living cells with strong "turn-on" fluorescence at 490 nm. SB3 is an excellent CN- sensor that exhibits some advantages, including easy synthesis, distinct fluorescence and color change, high selectivity, low detection limit, and good anti-interference ability to analyze solution and food samples, together with fluorescence cell imaging.

Abstract
A new Schiff base fluorescent probe NBP derived from the one-step condensation strategy of 2-butyl-6-hydroxy-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[de]isoquinoline-5-carbaldehyde and N-(2-(hydrazinecarbonyl)phenyl)benzamide was synthesized and characterized. NBP exhibited high selectivity toward Al3+ along with naked-eye color changes and prominent fluorescence enhancement. The limit of detection (LOD) of NBP toward Al3+ was detected to be 80 nM. The binding ratio of NBP with Al3+ ions was obtained as 1 : 2 on the basis of Job's plot with the association constant Ka value of 4.22 × 1010 M-1/2. The plausible complexation mechanism of NBP toward Al3+ ions was validated by the density functional theory (DFT) and IR spectrum. In addition, in situ formed "NBP + Al3+" could be utilized as the second sensor for selective recognition of F-via fluorescence quenching with a low detection limit (44 nM). Furthermore, the cell imaging experiments of probe NBP in HeLa cells have successfully demonstrated that NBP could serve as an indicator for monitoring Al3+ ions in living cells. On top of that, NBP could be used to prepare simple test paper strips for quickly and qualitatively detecting a trace amount of Al3+ ions in a visible manner.

Abstract
A novel purine Schiff base fluorescent probe (WYW), (E)-4-methyl-2-((2-(9-(naphthalen-1-yl)-8-(thiophen-2-yl)-9H-purin-6-yl)hydrazono)methyl)phenol, was designed and prepared as an excellent reversible fluorescent chemosensor for monitoring Al3+. The fluorogenic "turn-on" sensor WYW exhibited high selectivity towards Al3+ over other coexistent metal ions, accompanying with an obvious visual color change in DMSO/H2O (9/1, v/v, pH = 7.4) media. The enhancement fluorescence of WYW could be attributed to the inhibition of PET and ESIPT process induced by Al3+. Notably, the WYW-Al3+ complex exhibited a fluorescence "turn-off" response towards F- with exceptional selectivity via the displacement approach. The detection limit of WYW for Al3+ was calculated to be as low as 82 nM. The formation of complex WYW-Al3+ (1:1 stoichiometry) was confirmed by Job's methods and further verified by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, the probe WYW with low cytotoxicity and excellent membrane-permeable property has also been successfully applied for detecting low concertation Al3+ in living HeLa cells.

Abstract
A new chemosensor (NANH) based on naphthyl moiety was synthesized with good selectivity and sensitivity towards Al3+ ions via the inhibition by operating through dual mechanisms like photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). The synthesized NANH was validated by various techniques such as 1H, 13C NMR and mass spectrum. While prominent fluorescent enhancement was observed from the NANH upon binding with Al3+ ions, however, other metal ions have not responded in the emission spectrum. Detection limit and association constant of NANH for Al3+ were calculated as 1.2 × 10-7 M and 4.09 × 104 M-1 by using fluorescence titration method. Binding ratio (1:1) of NANH with Al3+ ions were proved by Job's plot and DFT studies. Furthermore, aluminium in variety of water samples was determined, and NANH could be used for biosensing of Al3+ in living cells.

Abstract
In this study, a naphthalene Schiff-base P which serves as a dual-analyte probe for the quantitative detection of Al3+ and Mg2+ has been designed. The proposed probe showed an ''off-on'' fluorescent response toward Al3+ in ethanol-water solution (1 : 9, v/v, pH 6.3, 20 mM HEPES) over other metal ions and anions, while the detection by the probe could be switched to Mg2+ by regulating the pH from 6.3 to 9.4. The sensing mechanisms of P to Al3+/Mg2+ are attributed to inhibition of the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process by the formation of 1 : 1 ligand-metal complexes. More importantly, the probe was applied successfully in living cells for the fluorescent cell-imaging of Al3+ and Mg2+.

Abstract
An easily prepared benzothiazole-based probe (BHM) was prepared and characterized by general spectra, including 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HRMS, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Based on the synergistic mechanism of the inhabitation of intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), the BHM displayed high selectivity and sensitivity for Al3+ in DMF/H2O (v/v, 1/1) through an obvious blue-shift in the fluorescent spectrum and significant color change detected by the naked eye, respectively. The binding ratio of BHM with Al3+ was 1:1, as determined by the Job plot, and the binding details were investigated using FT-IR, 1H NMR titration, and ESI-MS analysis. Furthermore, the BHM was successfully applied in the detection of Al3+ in the Songhua River and on a test stripe. Fluorescence imaging experiments confirmed that the BHM could be used to monitor Al3+ in human stromal cells (HSC).

Abstract
Aluminum is the most abundant metallic element in the Earth's crust and acts as a non-essential element for biological species. The accumulation of excessive amounts of aluminum can be harmful to biological species. Thus, the development of convenient and selective tools for the aluminum detection is necessary. In this work, a highly selective aluminum ion fluorescent probe N'-(2,5-dihydroxybenzylidene)acetohydrazide (Al-II) has been successfully synthesized and systemically characterized. The fluorescence intensity of this probe shows a significant enhancement in the presence of Al3+, which is subject to the strong quench effects caused by Cu2+ and Fe3+. The binding ratio of probe-Al3+ was determined from the Job's plot to be 1:1. Moreover, the probe was demonstrated to be effective for in vivo imaging of the intracellular aluminum ion in both living Drosophila S2 cells and Malpighian tubules.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent chemosensor based on crown ether-acylhydrazone (L) was synthesized and characterized. The sensor L exhibited high selectivity and sensitive recognition towards Al3+ through a significant "turn-on" fluorescence response at 444 nm in methanol solution. While, other competitive ions had no such significant effects on the fluorescence emission. The associated spectra behavior might be attributed to the formation of 2:1 L-Al3+ complex and the proposed binding mode of L-Al3+ was demonstrated by the fluorescence titration profiles, Job's plot, ESI-MS spectrometry, 1H NMR titration and the IR analysis. Besides the high reproducibility of the optical signals, very low detection limit of 0.24 μM was calculated. The association constant (Ks) for L-Al3+ complex was about 5.56 × 109 ± 8.19 × 107 M-2. The results of various experiments showed the sensor L followed a turn-on mechanism via of the suppression of CN isomerization and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process and the activation of chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF). Theoretical calculations using DFT/B3LYP method was also used to get insight into the sensing mechanism and electronic structure of L. The sensor L could be conceived as an effective and practical fluorescent chemosensor for determination of Al3+.

Abstract
A novel fluorescent probe, phenolphthalein‑dialdehyde‑(2‑pyridyl) hydrazone (L), for sequentially detecting Al3+ and F- in almost 100% aqueous medium was successfully designed and synthesized. The probe offers two binding pockets for Al3+ to form a 1: 2 ligand/metal complex, leading to a significant fluorescence enhancement at 465 nm. Further, the in-situ formed L-Al complex acts as a secondary fluorescent chemosensor for F- by quenching the fluorescence of the complex with high selectivity. The detection limit for Al3+ and F- sensing is 2.28 nM and 0.13 μM, respectively, which are far below the World Health Organization (WHO) acceptable limits (7.41 μM for Al3+ ion and 79 μM for F-) in drinking water. The probe L was successfully applied to the detection of Al3+ and F- in cells using fluorescence microscopy.

Abstract
The functionalized molecules with specific molecular sites appear to be a promising approach for detection of cation in UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy. The synthesized receptor 4-((5-methylfuran-2-yl)methylene)hydrazono)methyl)phenol MFMHMP was found selective for La3+ among Ag+, K+, Na+, Be2+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Eu3+, Al3+, La3+, Zr4+, Th4+, UO22+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Hg2+ metal ions used as their nitrates by UV-visible spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. The binding nature of MFMHMP with La3+ ion was analyzed by UV-visible, fluorescence, IR, mass spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetric studies. The stoichiometry was established to be 1:1 by Benesi-Hildebrand, mole-ratio method and method of continuous variation (Job's method) with good association affinity K = 6.245 × 104 M-1. Computational studies and Density functional theory (DFT) calculation gives the proof of electron transfer during excitation and emission. Binding energy of complex through Density Function Theory -62.387 kcal/mol has also indication of strong binding. The electron transfer energy of Higher occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to Lower unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) is about 4.662 eV for MFMHMP+La3+ Complex. Among that all transitions HOMO → LUMO + 8 and HOMO → LUMO + 9 play a key role for the blue shift transition during complexation.
