Abstract
Hydrazine (N2H4) and hypochlorite (ClO-) are both reactive chemical substances extensively utilized across various industrial domains. Excessive hydrazine (N2H4) and hypochlorite (ClO-) can pose significant risks to the environment, ecosystems, and human health. In order to assess and control the environmental hazard caused by N2H4 and ClO-, there is an imperative need for efficient methods capable of rapid and precise detection of these contaminants. This paper introduces a novel dual-responsive colorimetric/fluorescent probe (MDT) for the detection of N2H4 and ClO- in environmental and biological samples. The probe exhibits turn-on fluorescent responses to N2H4 or ClO- with low detection limits (N2H4: 8 nM; ClO-: 15 nM), large Stokes shifts (N2H4: 175 nm; ClO-: 203 nm), short response time (N2H4: 4 min; ClO-: 5 s) and broad pH range (5-10). In practical applications, MDT has been successfully employed in detecting N2H4 and ClO- in water and soil samples from diverse locations. Test strips loaded with MDT offer a visual and convenient means to track N2H4 vapor and quantify N2H4 and ClO- concentrations in solutions. Finally, MDT has been utilized for sensing N2H4 and ClO- in Arabidopsis thaliana roots and living zebrafish. This study presents a promising tool for monitoring N2H4 and ClO- in the environment and living organisms.

Abstract
Hazardous cyanide anions (CN-) are increasingly threatening the environment and human health due to their widespread use in industry and many other fields. Over the past three decades, a large number of probes have been reported to sensitively and selectively detect this toxic anion, while a rather limited number of ratiometric fluorescent probes have been developed. The ratiometric probes have significant potential in bio-imaging and biomedical applications because of the ability to detect CN- in a quick, convenient and affordable way. In this review, we introduce 42 ratiometric fluorescent probes reported in the past 6 years (2018-2023) for CN- detection. Our description includes the chemical structures, photo-physical properties, CN- sensing mechanisms, solution color changes, limits of detection (LODs) and/or various applications of these chemical probes. This review provides guidelines for design and development of a new ratiometric probe for effective CN- detection.

Abstract
A new efficient Schiff base sensor SB3 for fluorescent and colorimetric "naked-eye" "turn-on" sensing of cyanide anion (CN-) with excellent sensitivity and selectivity was developed. The 4,4'-(perfluoropropane-2,2-diyl)bisphenol group and two phenyl groups were covalently linked by two C = N bonds to extend the conjugation length. The four hydroxyl groups can improve the water solubility of the SB3 sensor. The SB3 sensor exhibited high specificity towards CN- by interrupting its intramolecular charge transfer, resulting in a color change and remarkable "turn-on" green fluorescence emission. The sensing mechanism is caused by the nucleophilic addition of CN- toward imine groups of the SB3 sensor, leading to breaks of the conjugation, fluorescent spectral changes, and color change. It was confirmed by 1H NMR titration and Mass spectra. The detection limits for CN- and Al3+obtained by fluorescence spectrum are 0.80 µM and 0.25 µM, respectively. The SB3 sensor can act as an efficient chemical sensor for detecting the CN- and Al3+ ions under common environmental and physiological conditions (pH 5-12). Besides, the sensor can also detect CN- in food materials (such as sprouting potatoes and cassava flour) and imaging CN-in living cells with strong "turn-on" fluorescence at 490 nm. SB3 is an excellent CN- sensor that exhibits some advantages, including easy synthesis, distinct fluorescence and color change, high selectivity, low detection limit, and good anti-interference ability to analyze solution and food samples, together with fluorescence cell imaging.

Abstract
A highly selective, novel BINOL based sensor BBCN has been developed for the fluorescent ratiometric detection of cyanide ions (CN−). The optical study revealed that BBCN exhibited unique spectral changes only with cyanide ions in the presence of other competing ions. Besides, an apparent fluorescent colour change from green to blue was observed. A clear linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence ratiometric ratio of BBCN and the concentration of CN− with a reasonably low detection limit (LOD) of 189 nM (507 ppb). The optical response was due to the nucleophilic addition of CN− to the dicyanovinyl group of the sensor, which compromises the probe's intramolecular charge transfer. This mechanism was well confirmed by Job's plot, 1H-NMR and ESI-MS studies. BBCN showed immediate spectral response towards (1 second) CN− and detection could be realized in a broad pH window. Furthermore, the practical utility of BBCN was studied by test paper-based analysis and the detection of CN− in various water resources. A highly selective, novel BINOL based sensor BBCN has been developed for the fluorescent ratiometric detection of cyanide ions (CN−).![]()

Abstract
Using Hg2+-promoted deprotection reaction, we have developed a new fluorescent turn-on sensor 2TS based on bithiophene fluorophore for Hg2+ detection. The sensing mechanism of 2TS towards Hg2+ was strongly proved by 1H NMR, FTIR, HRMS, UV-vis and fluorescence spectra. Remarkly, 2TS towards Hg2+ in 100% aqueous solution shows high sensitivity with a low detection limit of 19 nM, superior selectivity and ultra-rapid response of 20 s during a wide sensing pH range from 4 to 10. Taking advantage of the excellent properties, the low-cost sensor 2TS-based filter paper/TLC test strips were fabricated for visual, immediate and quantitative detection of Hg2+ in water, proving its applicability towards sensitive in-situ and on-site detection. Meanwhile, 2TS showed high analytical performance for Hg2+ detection in water, seafood as well as human urine samples. Moreover, thanks to the good water solubility, negligible cytotoxicity, good biocompatibility and cell-membrane permeability, 2TS was further applied to effectively image Hg2+ in live cells. Furthermore, the developed sensor 2TS acted as good fluorescent display material for Hg2+ with obvious color change.

Abstract
Indolium derivatives bearing diphenyl amine (R1) and dibenzylamine (R2) linked through benzene was designed, synthesized, characterized and its cyanide recognizing abilities are studied in 100% water. The probes were exhibited dual channel properties i.e. both colorimetric and fluorimetric changes for the effective sensing of cyanide ion. The discrete color variation of probes with cyanide ion makes possible as colorimetric sensor and which was seen easily through naked eye. The recognition of cyanide ion is accomplished via the attachment of cyanide ion at the C atom of indolium CN group through nucleophilic addition. Also, the found detection limits of probes (nM range) were much lower than the WHO limit. Besides, the probes were effectively applied to determine cyanide ion in real water samples and thus was confirmed with HPLC method.

Abstract
Macromolecules with well-defined structures in terms of molar mass and monomer sequence became interesting building blocks for modern materials. The precision of the macromolecular structure makes fine-tuning of the properties of resulting materials possible. Conjugated macromolecules exhibit excellent optoelectronic properties that make them exceptional candidates for sensor construction. The importance of chain length and monomer sequence is particularly important in conjugated systems. The oligomer length, monomer sequence, and structural modification often influence the energy bang gap between the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the molecules that reflect in their properties. Moreover, the supramolecular aggregation that is often observed in oligo-conjugated systems is usually strongly affected by even minor structural changes that are used for sensor designs. This review discusses the examples of well-defined conjugated macromolecules based on oligo(arylene ethynylene) skeleton used for sensor applications. Here, exclusively examples of uniform macromolecules are summarized. The sensing mechanisms and importance of uniformity of structure are deliberated.

Abstract
Herein, the turn-off fluorescence sensor of 2-((4'-(7,8,13,14-tetrahydrodibenzo[a,i]phenanthridin-5-yl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)methylene)malanonitrile (7) was developed for the recognition of CN- ions and studied using different spectroscopic techniques. The selective recognition of CN- ions by 7 was investigated via UV-vis spectroscopy and fluorescence studies in acetonitrile solvent, which exhibited an obvious color change from orange to colorless under 365 UV light. The sensor compound 7 possesses a high binding constant (K a) for CN- ions in the order of 5.22 × 106 M-1. The results from the interference studies revealed that probe 7 shows high sensing selectivity and sensitivity for CN- ions over other competitive anions. Probe 7 interacts with cyanide to form a 1 : 1 adduct, and this mechanism was further verified by 1H NMR titration, Job's plot analyses and DFT studies. The sensor probe 7 exhibits advantages such as low limit of detection (LOD) of 39.3 nM, fast response and sensing in a wide pH range of 3 to 11. The practical application of 7 was successfully demonstrated for the determination of CN- ions in test paper strips and various water samples.

Abstract
Colorimetric chemosensors have attracted tremendous interest for sensing hazardous substances in an uncomplicated and economical manner. Herein, a series of push-pull dicyanovinyl-substituted oligothiophene derivatives were designed, and the impacts of different end-cappers on their photophysical properties were comprehensively investigated. Interestingly, combined with a zinc porphyrin derivative (Zn-TPP), one dicyanovinyl-substituted oligothiophene derivative (NA-3T-CN) can be further developed into colorimetric and fluorescent sensor array for dual-mode detection of aliphatic amines and hydrazine. The obtained sensors showed satisfactory results between optical response and analyte's concentration both in selective single-sensor type and in enhanced multisensory mode. Based on the fluorescence change of the NA-3T-CN system, the detection limit for N2H4 was calculated to be around 1.22 × 10-5 mol/L in THF. The stained TLC-supported sensor array offers obvious optical changes for down to 0.5 wt % hydrazine solution for naked-eye sensing. An aromatic amine like aniline has no obvious effect on the dicyanovinyl-substituted oligothiophene derivatives. We also found that a zinc porphyrin derivative has an obvious colorimetric response to the presence of hydrazine, ethanolamine, and aniline. Furthermore, smartphone-enabled readout system and data treatment based on RGB changes of the sensor array were performed, and the discrimination capability among hydrazine, aliphatic amines, and aromatic amine was satisfactory. In this regard, related push-pull oligothiophene derivatives not only can be regarded as models for a fundamental understanding of the relationship between molecular structure and photophysical properties but also present potential applications in the field of real-time and visual detection of hazardous chemicals.

Abstract
A new donor-π-acceptor derived from phenothiazine, namely 2-(2-((10-hexyl-10H-phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene)-3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene) malononitrile (PTZON) was synthesized and fully characterized, and its potential as a fluorescent sensor for cyanide anion was investigated. The PTZON showed a visible absorption band at 564 nm corresponds to an intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and an emission band at 589 nm in CH3CN/H2O. The results of cyanide anion titration revealed ratiometric changes in both absorption and fluorescence spectra as a result of the nucleophilic addition of cyanide anion via Michael addition. The optical studies, FT-IR spectra, NMR, high-resolution mass, and DFT calculations confirmed the sensing mechanism. The selectivity of PTZON as a cyanide anion fluorescent sensor was proved in mixed solvent solutions, and the sensitivity was as low as 0.011 µM, which is far lower than the value allowed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for drinking water (1.9 µM). Also, the detection limit of PTZON was assessed to be 3.39 μM by the spectrophotometric method. The binding stoichiometry between PTZON and cyanide anion was found to be 1:1 as evidenced by mass spectra. TLC silica-coated plates test strips demonstrated the fluorescent detection of cyanide anion.

Abstract
A Novel chemosensor R possessing napthoquinone substituted benzaldehyde has been successfully designed, synthesized and characterized using NMR and mass spectral techniques. The receptor exhibits striking colour change from pale yellow to intense green with sodium cyanide in DMF-H2O (80-20% v/v) in a wide range of pH (3-12). Based on the results of spectral (UV-Vis, fluorescence and NMR), electrochemical and kinetic studies a plausible mechanism has been proposed for the cyanide detection process. The mechanism of sensing of cyanide by R is through the formation of cyanohydrin in acidic, neutral and basic solutions, which is the novelty of the receptor. The pseudo-first-order rate constants for the formation of cyanohydrin are found to be 2.9 × 10-3, 3.9 × 10-3 and 4.6 × 10-3 min-1 at pH values 5, 7 and 10, respectively in DMF-H2O (80-20% v/v) medium, supporting the ability of R to form cyanohydrin with equal ease in different pH values. The results of Job's continuous variation method indicates a 1:2 (R:CN-) stoichiometry for the interaction. The only minor drawback with the receptor is the time taken to impart visible colour change with cyanide ion, which is not instantaneous.

Anal Chim Acta 2019; 1065:113-123. Abstract
A new highly selective and sensitive dual-mode sensor 3TD based on the conjugate of oligothiophene and barbituric acid moiety was developed for colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent detection of CN─. The sensor 3TD exhibited high specificity towards CN─ by interrupting its own ICT producing thereupon a large blue-shift in UV-Vis spectrum and remarkable "turn-on" fluorescence emission. The detection limit was 2.26 × 10─7 M, which is quite lower than the permissible level of CN─ in drinking water according to the WHO. The fluorescent detection of CN─ was well demonstrated by filter paper strips and silica coated TLC plates. Moreover, the sensor was also used to detect CN─ in environmental water and agro-products with satisfactory results. Most importantly, in terms of these advantages of colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent dual-mode, immediate response, excellent selectivity, high sensitivity, low cytotoxicity, and good biocompatibility, the sensor 3TD was successfully applied into CN- imaging in living cells, demonstrating its excellent value in practical application.
