Fine tuning the emission wavelengths of the 7-hydroxy-1-indanone based nano-structure dyes: Near-infrared (NIR) dual emission generation with large stokes shifts

ESIPT-induced spin-orbit coupling enhancement leads to tautomer fluorescence quenching of the 10-HHBF molecule

We present novel insights into the interplay between excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the 10-hydroxy-11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-one (10-HHBF) molecule, utilizing the time-dependent density functional theory approach and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Our discoveries entail a reassessment of the luminescence mechanism for 10-HHBF, characterizing it as an ESIPT fluorophore. Additionally, we demonstrate that the molecule undergoes intersystem crossing (ISC) following proton transfer, which quenches the fluorescence of the proton-transferred state, thus resulting in the absence of dual emission and a limited spectral range of fluorescence. Furthermore, our investigation reveals that 10-HHBF displays an SOC enhancement feature induced by ESIPT, which facilitates the ISC process. This trait serves as a barrier to the application of 10-HHBF in single-molecule white light emitters (SMWLEs). Our findings underscore the notable influence of the ESIPT-induced spin-orbit interaction enhancement on luminescent properties, which necessitates consideration in the design of SMWLEs.

Is excited state intramolecular proton transfer frustrated in 10-hydroxy-11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-one?

Recently, Piechowska and coworker found that hydroxybenzofluorenone 10-hydroxy11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-one (10-HHBF) does not show dual fluorescence, which is in contrast to its well-known analogue 1-hydroxy-11H-benzo[b]fluoren-11-one (1-HHBF) [Dyes Pigm. 2019, 165, 346-353.]. Based on the increased donor-acceptor distance and the lower stability of the excited state tautomer of former, they believe that different from 1-HHBF, ESIPT is not occurring in 10-HHBF. In the preset work, in order to clarify whether ESIPT would take place in 10-HHBF, we have optimized the four-state geometrical structures (ground state S₀, first singlet excited state S₁, transition state S_1-TS and after proton transfer S_1-PT), carried out the Natural Population Analysis and scanned the ground-state and excited-state potential energy curves of 1-HHBF and 10-HHBF at TD-CAM-B3LYP/6-311 + g(2d,2p)/IEFPCM (cyclohexane) theory level. It is found that ESIPT should take place in both 1-HHBF and 10-HHBF and the Gibbs free energy diagram further indicates that the ESIPT process is more favorable in 10-HHBF than in 1-HHBF.

Fine-tuned dual fluorescence behavior of N-substituted aniline-imidazopyridine based switches: Mechanistic understanding, substituent and solvent effects

In order to understand the fine-tuned photo-physical behaviors of the N(X)-H⋯N systems, the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) switching in the N-substituted X_1-5-NHIPA molecules (NHIPA = 2-(imidazo[1,2-a]pyridin-2-yl)aniline and X = H, COCH₃, CH₃C₆H₄SO₂, C₆F₅SO₂, and COCF₃) were investigated in detail in gas phase and three solvent media at TD-PBE0/6-311++G(d,p) and TD-M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory. ESIPT reactions at S₁ state were approximately without energy barrier, exergonic processes and were quantitatively demonstrated to be mainly sensitive to substituents and solvent media. The X-NHIPA (X = CH₃C₆H₄SO₂, C₆F₅SO₂ and CF₃CO) compounds were predicted to undergo fast, irreversible proton transfer at S₁ state and, in turn, exhibit tautomer emission with anomalous large Stokes shift in the gas phase. In the toluene solvent, except for C₆F₅SO₂-NHIPA that showed exclusively a tautomer emission with a long wavelength, all other X-NHIPA molecules were predicted to involve in the reversible ESIPT and hence exhibit a dual normal and tautomer emissions behavior, in good agreement with the experimental observations. In polar solvents, it is expected that all compounds show dual normal and tautomer emissions. The nearly equal intensities of the normal and tautomer emissions can lead to the generation of the white lights with the potential in lighting applications.
