A selective fluorescent chemosensor for Cd2+ based on 8-hydroxylquinoline-benzothiazole conjugate and imaging application

Sustainable and reusable probe-encapsulated porous poly(AMST-co-TRIM) monolithic sensor for the selective and ultra-sensitive detection of toxic cadmium(II) from industrial/environmental wastewater

This study focuses on a new type of fast responsive solid-state visual colorimetric sensor, custom engineered with dual-entwined porous polymer imbued with chromoionophoric 4-(sec-butyl)- 2-((5-mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl)diazenyl)phenol (SMDP) probe for selective and ultra-sensitive colorimetric sensing of Cd(II). The polymer monolith, i.e., poly(aminostyrene-co-trimethylolpropanetrimethacrylate) denoted as poly(AMST-co-TRIM), is designed through a stoichiometric blending of monomer, crosslinker, and porogens leading to superior surface area, pore and adsorption properties for the voluminous incorporation of SMDP probe for target specific ion sensing. The porosity, surface and structural characteristics of the poly(AMST-co-TRIM)monolith and poly(AMST-co-TRIM)SMDP sensor are investigated using p-XRD, XPS, TG-DTA, FT-IR, BET/BJH, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, EDAX, and SAED techniques. The poly(AMST-co-TRIM)SMDP sensor reveals a frozen geometrical orientation of SMDP molecules to bind selectively with Cd(II), forming stable charge-transfer complexes by exhibiting transitional visible color shifts from light yellow to dark green (λmax 608 nm). The sensor imposes a linear response from 0-200 ppb, with quantification and detection limits of 0.95 and 0.28 ppb. The fabricated sensor material is cost-effective and versatile in its solid-state naked-eye sensing, with excellent reusability. The sensor performance has been verified using various environmentally contaminated water and commercial cigarette samples, with a recovery of ≥ 99.12% and an RSD of ≤ 1.95%, thus reflecting exceptional data reproducibility/reliability.

Highly Selective Turn-on Fluorescence Sensor for Cd2+ Ions by Tripodal Organic Ligand

Organic fluorescence sensor for selectively detecting and quantifying toxic heavy metal ions has received significant interest due to their environmental hazards. Herein, we have designed and synthesized a simple tripodal Schiff base ligand (1) based on hydroxy-naphthaldehyde and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (TREN) and demonstrated highly selective turn-on fluorescence sensing of Cd2+ ions. The free ligand did not show any fluorescence in DMF. In contrast, Cd2+ (10- 4 M) addition exhibited a strong enhancement of fluorescence at 450 nm. Interestingly, other metal ions including Zn2+, which exhibit similar chemistry, did not show any turn-on fluorescence. The concentration-dependent studies of 1 with Cd2+ showed the detection limit of 6.78 × 10- 8 M. NMR spectra of 1 with Cd2+ and computational studies were performed to understand the mechanism of sense.

Easily synthesizable molecular probe for the nanomolar level detection of Cd2+ in near aqueous media: Theoretical investigations and live cell imaging

The present investigation highlights a quinoline-based small molecule probe (DEQ) for the detection of Cd2+ among other metal ions in near-aqueous media. The probe DEQ and its Cd2+ complex (DEQ-Cd) have been synthesized and characterized by all possible spectroscopic methods. The weakly emissive DEQ showed its strong emission in the presence of Cd2+, which is attributed to the photoinduced electron transfer (PET) along with the chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) mechanism. The 1:1 binding mode between ligand and Cd2+ is confirmed by single crystal XRD analysis, which is further supported by Job's plot and HRMS. The detection limit of the probe to recognize Cd2+ was found to be as low as 89 nM. Furthermore, DEQ can act as a reversible fluorescence probe with the off-on-off mechanism by the alternative addition of Cd2+ and EDTA. DFT and TD-DFT studies exposed the proposed mechanism after Cd2+ insertion and the obtained results for electronic spectra are in line with the experimental results. The response towards pH was quite interesting and allowed us to study its application in live cell imaging. With all the positive results, the proposed ligand DEQ can be used as a potential probe for the detection of Cd2+ in real-life applications.

A novel fluorescence probe for the recognition of Cd2+ and its application

A facile fluorescence probe BQBH was synthesized and investigated on its spectrum property. The result showed that the BQBH had high sensitivity and selectivity for Cd²⁺ with lowest detection determined as 0.14 μM by fluorescence response. The 1: 1 binding ratio between BQBH and Cd²⁺ was determined by Job's plot, and the binding details were further confirmed by ¹H NMR titration, FT-IR spectrum and HRMS analysis. The applications including on test paper, smart phone and cell image were all also investigated.

A Significant Fluorescence Turn-On Probe for the Recognition of Al3+ and Its Application

An easy prepared probe, BHMMP, was designed and synthesized, which displayed a significant fluorescence enhancement (over 38-fold) and obvious color change in the recognition of Al³⁺. The binding ratio of probe BHMMP to Al³⁺ was determined as 1:1, according to Job plot. The binding mechanism was fully clarified by the experiments, such as FT-IR spectrum, ESI-MS analysis, and ¹H NMR titration. A DFT study further confirmed the binding mode of BHMMP to Al³⁺. The limit of detection (LOD) for Al³⁺ was determined as low as 0.70 µM, based on the fluorescence titration of BHMMP. Moreover, the results from real sample experiments, including real water samples, test papers, and cell images, well-demonstrated that BHMMP was capable of sensing Al³⁺ in environmental and biological systems.

Introduction of a methoxymethyloxy (MOMO) group at one of the four quinoline rings of TQEN (N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis-(2-quinolylmethyl)ethylenediamine) affords Cd2+-selective fluorescence enhancement.

A chalcone-based fluorescent chemosensor for detecting Mg2+ and Cd2

SBOD (sodium (E)-2-(3-[5-bromothiophen-2-yl]-3-oxoprop-1-en-1-yl)-4,6-dichlorophenolate) was designed and synthesized as a chalcone-based fluorescent turn-on chemosensor for Mg²⁺ and Cd²⁺ . SBOD selectively detected Mg²⁺ and Cd²⁺ through the increase in effective fluorescence. Detection limits of SBOD for Mg²⁺ and Cd²⁺ were calculated to be 3.8 μM and 2.9 μM, respectively. The binding modes of SBOD for Mg²⁺ and Cd²⁺ were determined to be 1:1 by ESI-MS and Job plot. Association mechanisms for SBOD to Mg²⁺ and Cd²⁺ were illustrated by ESI-MS, UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopy, and calculations.

Recent progress in cadmium fluorescent and colorimetric probes

Cadmium is a heavy metal which exists widely in industrial and agricultural production and can induce a variety of diseases in organisms. Therefore, its detection is of great significance in the fields of biology, environment and medicine. Fluorescent probe has been a powerful tool for cadmium detection because of its convenience, sensitivity, and bioimaging capability. In this paper, we reviewed 98 literatures on cadmium fluorescent sensors reported from 2017 to 2021, classified them according to different fluorophores, elaborated the probe design, application characteristics and recognition mode, summarized and prospected the development of cadmium fluorescent and colorimetric probes. We hope to provide some help for researchers to design cadmium fluorescent probes with higher selectivity, sensitivity and practicability.

A quinoline-based fluorescent chemosensor for palladium ion (Pd2+)-selective detection in aqueous solution

Quinoline-based fluorescent chemosensors have been extensively developed for various metal cations, but it was still rare for Pd²⁺-selective detection. In this work, a novel quinoline-benzimidazole conjugate containing one carboxylic acid group (QBM) was designed, and the QBM displayed highly selective fluorescence quenching response towards Pd²⁺ over other metal cations in aqueous solution. The fluorescence titration revealed a good linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity and the Pd²⁺ concentration in the range of 0.5-10 μmol L^-1, with the detection limit of 0.26 μmol L^-1 (S/N = 3). Fluorescence detection of Pd²⁺ in practical water sample was also successfully achieved.

Synthesis, Crystal Structures, Fluorescence and Quantum Chemical Investigations of some Multi-Substituted Quinoline Derivatives

Starting from eugenol (4-allyl-2-methoxyphenol) three new quinoline derivatives, namely 5-bromo-7-(carboxymethoxy)-6-hydroxy-1-methylquinolin-1-ium-3-sulfonate (Q2, C₁₂H₁₀BrNO₇S), 5-amino-7-(carboxymethoxy)-6-hydroxyquinolin-1-ium-3-sulfonate (Q4, C₁₁H₁₀N₂O₇S) and 7-(carboxymethoxy)-5,6-dihydroxylquinolin-1-ium-3-sulfonate (Q6, C₁₁H₉NO₈), have been synthesized and crystallised as dihydrate. The best planes through the quinoline ring and the carboxymethoxy substituent is 6.60 (14), 7.28 (6) and 4.73 (7)° for Q2, Q4 and Q6, respectively. The crystal packing of Q2 is characterised by O-H…O, π …π and Br …pyridine interactions. The two water molecules bridge three sulphate groups. Infinite chains of Q4 running in the direction [021] are formed by O/N-H …O hydrogen bonds at both ends of the molecule. Parallel chains interact by O/N-H…O hydrogen bonds and π…π and C=O…phenyl stacking. The -NH₂ substituent bridges two sulphate groups, while the two water molecules bridge the other functional groups. The packing of Q6 consists of sheets of molecules interaction through O/N-H…O hydrogen bonds while the two water molecules bridge all function groups present. Parallel sheets interact through π…π and C=O…pyridine stacking. An aqueous solution of Q2 and its precursor 7-(carboxymethoxy)-6-hydroxyquinolin-1-ium-3-sulfonate (Q) exhibits fluorescence which is pH dependent. The fluorescence intensity of a 10 μM solution of Q containing Zn²⁺ reaches its maximum for a [Zn²⁺]:[Q] ratio of 1:1. The fluorescence properties of Q, Q2, Q4 and Q6 were further investigated by DFT calculation methods.

A Simple Isoniazid-Based N-Acylhydrazone Derivative as Potential Fluorogenic Probe for Zn2+ Ions

This study evaluated three isoniazid-based N-acylhydrazone derivatives (HL1, HL2, and HL3) varying their substituting groups (-H, -N(CH₃)₂, and -NO₂) as potential chemosensors for Zn²⁺ ions. To this end, the absorption and emission properties of these derivatives were investigated in the presence of Zn²⁺ ions. Results point to the derivative HL2 as the best chemosensor for Zn²⁺ ions because of its comparatively higher sensitivity. The color of this derivative changed from colorless to strong yellow with zinc addition, as indicated by the shift in UV-vis spectrum. Moreover, HL2 was the only derivative to emit fluorescence in the presence of Zn²⁺ ions, attributable to PET inhibition and bond isomerization promoted by coordination with this metal. LOD, LOQ, and binding constant values for HL2 + Zn²⁺ were 0.43 μmol.l^-1, 0.93 μmol.l^-1, and 5.04 × 10¹² l.mol^-1, respectively. The fluorescence of HL2 with other metal ions (Fe³⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Co²⁺, Ni²⁺, Ca²⁺, and K⁺) was also investigated. Zn²⁺ yielded the best result without Cd²⁺ interferences. Job's Plot showed that the stoichiometric ratio of the complex formed by HL2 and Zn²⁺ ions is 2:1 (ligand:metal). The strip test with adsorbed HL2 indicated fluorescence in the presence of zinc ions under 365 nm UV irradiation.

A simple fluorescent probe for detection of Ag+ and Cd2+ and its Cd2+ complex for sequential recognition of S2

In this study, we designed and synthesized a simple probe 2-(8-((8-methoxyquinolin-2-yl)methoxy)quinolin-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole (DQT) for detection of Ag⁺ and Cd²⁺ in a CH₃OH/HEPES (9 : 1 v/v, pH = 7.30) buffer system. Its structure was characterized by NMR, ESI-HR-MS and DFT calculations, and its fluorescence performance was also investigated. Probe DQT showed fluorescence quenching in response to Ag⁺ and Cd²⁺ with low detection limits of 0.42 μM and 0.26 μM, respectively. Importantly, the complexation of the probe with Cd²⁺ resulted in a red shift from blue to green, making it possible to detect Ag⁺ and Cd²⁺ by the naked eye under an ultraviolet lamp. The DQT-Cd²⁺ complex could be used for sequential recognition of S^2-. The recovery response could be repeated 3 times by alternate addition of Cd²⁺ and S^2-. A filter paper strip test further demonstrated the potential of probe DQT as a convenient and rapid assay.

An "OR-AND" logic gate based multifunctional colorimetric sensor for the discrimination of Pb2+ and Cd2

Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ are the most ubiquitous heavy metal ion pollutants, and they have aroused much attention due to their irreversible and significant damage to human organ. In this work, a new fluorescein-based "OR-AND" logic gate colorimetric probe 3',6'-bis((tert-butyldiphenylsilyl)oxy)-2-(2-((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino)ethylidene)aminspiro[isoindoline-1,9'-xanthen]-3-one (FP) was designed and synthesized via attaching 2-(2-((2-hydroxyphenyl)imino)ethylidene)amino and tert-butyldiphenylsilyl to fluorescein as the specific identification groups. This sensor can rapidly and sensitively discriminate Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ by utilizing F^- as an auxiliary reagent. When Pb²⁺ or Cd²⁺ was added into the FP solution, the absorption band at 533 nm increased and the peak at 374 nm decreased, the color changed from colorless to pale-purple, resulting in a ratiometric spectral change. However, adding fluoride ion to the FP solution containing Pb²⁺ or Cd²⁺ resulted in a distinct phenomenon in which the pale purple color fades out to colorless for a Pb²⁺-containing solution and deepen to dark purple for a Cd²⁺-containing solution, which is attributable to the different coordination mechanisms. In aqueous solution, the detection limits of FP can reach 0.42 μM for Pb²⁺ and 0.53 μM for Cd²⁺. The probe exhibited rapid responses for these analytes. Moreover, FP was successfully used to rapidly detect trace amounts of hazardous Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ in tap water with good relative recovery and the relative standard deviations (RSD) were 1.8% for Pb²⁺ and 0.3% for Cd²⁺, providing a novel approach for detecting Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺ in practical application.

Synthesis, Electrochemical and Spectroscopic Characterization of Selected Quinolinecarbaldehydes and Their Schiff Base Derivatives

A new approach to the synthesis of selected quinolinecarbaldehydes with carbonyl groups located at C5 and/or in C7 positions is presented in this paper in conjunction with spectroscopic characterization of the products. The classical Reimer-Tiemann, Vilsmeier-Haack and Duff aldehyde synthesis methods were compared due to their importance. Computational studies were carried out to explain the preferred selectivity of the presented formylation transformations. A carbene insertion reaction based on Reimer-Tiemann methodology is presented for making 7-bromo-8-hydroxyquinoline-5-carbaldehyde. Additionally, Duff and Vilsmeier-Haack reactions were used in the double formylation of quinoline derivatives and their analogues benzo[h]quinolin-10-ol, 8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline-5,7-dicarbaldehyde, 8-(dimethylamino) quinoline-5,7-dicarbaldehyde and 10-hydroxybenzo[h]quinoline-7,9-dicarbaldehyde. Four Schiff base derivatives of 2,6-diisopropylbenzenamine were prepared from selected quinoline-5-carbaldehydes and quinoline-7-carbaldehyde by an efficient synthesis protocol. Their properties have been characterized by a combination of several techniques: MS, HRMS, GC-MS, FTIR, electronic absorption spectroscopy and multinuclear NMR. The electrochemical properties of 8-hydroxy-quinoline-5-carbaldehyde, 6-(dimethylamino)quinoline-5-carbaldehyde and its methylated derivative were investigated, and a strong correlation between the chemical structure and obtained reduction and oxidation potentials was found. The presence of a methyl group facilitates oxidation. In contrast, the reduction potential of methylated compounds was more negative comparing to non-methylated structure. Calculations of frontier molecular orbitals supported the finding. The structures of 8-hydroxy-2-methylquinoline-5,7-dicarbaldehyde and four Schiff bases were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements.

A novel fluorescent chemosensor based on coumarin and quinolinyl-benzothiazole for sequential recognition of Cu2+ and PPi and its applicability in live cell imaging

In this study, a highly selective fluorescent sensor (E)-2-((2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)quinolin-8-yl)oxy)-N'-((7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl)methylene)acetohydrazide (TQC) was synthesized from 2-methylquinolin-8-ol and 4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde and its structure was characterized by ¹H NMR, ¹³C NMR, ESI-HR-MS and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Sensor TQC showed an obvious "on-off-on" fluorescence response to Cu²⁺ and PPi in a DMSO/HEPES (3:2 v/v, pH = 7.4) buffer system. The detection limits of sensor TQC were 0.06 μM to Cu²⁺ and 0.01 μM to PPi. In addition, sensor TQC showed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry to Cu²⁺ and TQC-Cu²⁺ complex showed a 2:1 binding stoichiometry to PPi. The optimum pH range of sensor TQC and TQC-Cu²⁺ was 3-8. Further studies demonstrated that sensor TQC could be made into test paper strips for the qualitative of Cu²⁺ and PPi and showed sequentially "on-off-on" fluorescent bio-imaging of Cu²⁺ and PPi in HeLa cells.

Water Soluble Porphyrin for the Fluorescent Determination of Cadmium Ions

Porphyrins are highly conjugated molecules that perform wide variety of functions in biological systems. They absorb strongly in the visible region and they are excellent fluorophores that emit in the visible region. If the meso or β positions of porphyrins are properly substituted, emission in the NIR region is facilitated. The fluorescence property of porphyrins can be used in sensing applications. Here, we report the synthesis of a water soluble porphyrin that emits in the NIR region and this molecule is used in the fluorescent determination of cadmium ion, which is an environmental pollutant and affects the health of living organisms adversely. 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin (THMPP), which is water soluble was synthesised from 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin (TMPP) by partial demethylation, which in turn was synthesized by mixture acid method. The donor-acceptor interaction of THMPP-Cd²⁺ system displays a dynamic fluorescence quenching through the electron transfer (ET) mechanism. Developed method showed a linear response toward Cd²⁺ in the concentration range of 0.25 μM to 2 μM. The limit of detection was found to be 0.1499 μM. THMPP exhibited excellent selectivity towards Cd (II) in presence of other metal ions like Hg²⁺, Mn²⁺, Mg²⁺, Co²⁺ in 1:100, Zn²⁺, Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺ in 1:10 and Na⁺, K⁺ in 1:1 M ratio.

N2S2 pyridinophane-based fluorescent chemosensors for selective optical detection of Cd2+ in soils

A fluorescent sensor array for the quantitative determination of Cd²⁺ in soils based on two N₂S₂ pyridinophane chemosensors is presented.
