Abstract
Development of fluorescent sensors with large Stokes shift for selective detection of heavy metals is of great importance. A novel fluorescent probe with extremely large Stokes shift (212 nm) was synthesized for selective and simultaneous detection of Hg2+ and Ag+ ions. The deep yellow probe turned colorless or pale yellow after addition of Hg2+ or Ag+. The new probe could be utilized for absorption spectral detection of Hg2+ and Ag+ both in ethanol and aqueous solution. Addition of Hg2+ and Ag+ ions caused significant decrease in the fluorescence intensity of the new probe and the selective recognition of Hg2+ and Ag+ was not interfered by common competitive metal ions including Li+, Na+, K+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Sr2+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+. The detection limit for Hg2+ and Ag+ was calculated to be 4.68 μM and 4.29 μM, respectively. Application of the new probe for quantitative determination of Hg2+ and Ag+ concentrations in real water samples was accomplished.

Abstract
Anthracene based chemosensor ABC has been synthesized and characterized through 1H, 13C NMR, mass spectral studies. UV absorption and emission studies performed to identify the sensing behavior of chemosensor ABC. The probe ABC, originally bright fluorescent, selectively sense Ag+ ion by the quenching the fluorescence intensity through a "Switch On-off" process and quench the fluorescence due to the heavy atom effect interaction with the free chemosensor. The binding constant of the probe ABC with Ag+ was calculated as 5.4 × 104 M-1 and the limit of detection upto 1.4 nM level. The practical utilization of the probe ABC was demonstrated by applying to the real water and soil sample analysis, latent finger print, and the sensor as a fluorescent ink.

Abstract
A new near-infrared (NIR) probe based on a coumarinyl ligand (CL) was designed and synthesized. The probe CL can be used for simultaneous fluorescent turn-on and colorimetric detection of Hg2+ and Ag+ in ethanol/water medium. Colorless solution of probe CL changed to light yellow or dark yellow after addition of Hg2+ or Ag+ ions. Meanwhile the maximum absorption band shifted from 379 nm to 404 nm and the intensity increased enormously (for Hg2+) or moderately (for Ag+). Probe CL displayed an extraordinarily large Stokes shift of 316 nm and addition of Hg2+ or Ag+ to probe CL induced enhancement in the intensity of fluorescence emission at 695 nm by 15 or 8 fold. The detection limit of CL for Hg2+ and Ag+ ions is 0.83 and 8.8 μM, respectively. The applicable pH for sensing Hg2+ by probe CL is in a broad range of 2-12. Application of probe CL for in vitro U87MG cell imaging to detect Hg2+ ions was confirmed.

Abstract
A practical hydrazine-carbothioamide-based fluorescent chemosensor TCC (N-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(thiophene-2-carbonyl)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide) was applied for Zn2+ detection. TCC exhibited selective fluorescence emission for Zn2+ and did not show any interference with other metal ions. In particular, TCC was utilized for the detection of Zn2+ in paper strips, zebrafish and real water samples. TCC could detect Zn2+ down to 0.39 μM in the solution phase and 51.13 μM in zebrafish. The association ratio between TCC and Zn2+ was determined to be 2:1 by ESI-mass and Job plot. The sensing mechanism of TCC for Zn2+ was illustrated to be a chelation-enhanced fluorescence process through spectroscopic experiments and theoretical calculations.

Abstract
A novel symmetric bianthracene derivative (D2) containing one benzene ring and two ethyl thioglycolates connecting to the benzene ring on both sides of the bianthracene unit was designed and synthesized. D2 can detect Fe3+ and Hg2+ in acetonitrile/water (6:4, v/v) solution via different changes of absorbance and fluorescence in the pH range from 3 to 10. D2 exhibits high colorimetric sensitivity for Fe3+ with low detection limit (1.87 × 10-5 mol/L). The absorbance intensity of D2 in acetonitrile/water solution show a linear response to Fe3+ in the wide concentration range of 0 -1000 μM, which is beneficial for quantitative analysis. D2 also displays highly selective fluorescent sensing for Hg2+ with a low detection limit of 1.07 µM over other metal ions and can accurately detect the existence of Hg2+ in water samples.

Abstract
Sensing heavy metal ions particularly for the most toxic Hg2+ is a long-term pursuit for chemists because of its obvious and extreme harmfulness to both the environment and human health. Herein, a novel 'turn-on' perylenebisimide-thiourea fluorescent probe PBI-BTB is achieved for rapid detection of Hg2+ in a DMSO/H2O (5/1, v/v) solution through a typical Hg2+-promoting desulfurization reaction, which has been investigated through Job's plot titration, FT-IR, 1H NMR and HRMS analysis. A remarkable fluorescence emission enhancement at 540 and 580 nm is observed in the presence of Hg2+, which is visible to the naked eye with high selectivity and sensitivity. Moreover, probe PBI-BTB combined strong anti-interference recognition with short response time (< 1 min). The rapid fluorescence response with low limit of detection (0.35 μM) in a wide pH range of 3.0-11.0 makes PBI-BTB a promising candidate for detection of Hg2+ without any buffer system. Furthermore, the practicability of probe PBI-BTB upon the Hg2+ recognition in human liver cancer cells (HepG-2) has been studied through fluorescent live cell imaging which reveals the probe's low toxicity to organism as well as the favorable cell permeability of PBI-BTB for detecting Hg2+ in biological systems.

Abstract
A rhodamine B-based sensor (RS) was designed and synthesized by a combination of the spirolacton rhodamine B (fluorophore) and multidentate chelates (ionophore) with high affinity towards Hg2+. In the presence of Hg2+, the resulting red-orange fluorescence (under UV light) and naked eye red color of RS are supposed to be used for quantitative and qualitative measurement of Hg2+. Further fluorescent titration and analysis demonstrate that RS can selectively detect Hg2+ within 1 s with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 16 nM in acetonitrile media, meanwhile, the association constant (Ka) was calculated to be 0.32 × 105 M-1. More importantly, the resultant complex (RSHg) of RS and Hg2+ has also been successfully applied to detect limited water content in acetonitrile solution.

Abstract
In this study, we designed and synthesized a simple probe 2-(8-((8-methoxyquinolin-2-yl)methoxy)quinolin-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole (DQT) for detection of Ag+ and Cd2+ in a CH3OH/HEPES (9 : 1 v/v, pH = 7.30) buffer system. Its structure was characterized by NMR, ESI-HR-MS and DFT calculations, and its fluorescence performance was also investigated. Probe DQT showed fluorescence quenching in response to Ag+ and Cd2+ with low detection limits of 0.42 μM and 0.26 μM, respectively. Importantly, the complexation of the probe with Cd2+ resulted in a red shift from blue to green, making it possible to detect Ag+ and Cd2+ by the naked eye under an ultraviolet lamp. The DQT-Cd2+ complex could be used for sequential recognition of S2-. The recovery response could be repeated 3 times by alternate addition of Cd2+ and S2-. A filter paper strip test further demonstrated the potential of probe DQT as a convenient and rapid assay.

Abstract
A novel coumarin-thiourea conjugate was synthesized facilely. It served as a fluorescent turn-on chemosensor for selective detection of Hg2+ ion over other common competitive metal ions including Li+, Na+, K+, Ag+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Sr2+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions based on the Hg2+-promoted desulfurization and cyclization reactions. Addition of Hg2+ ion to the sensor solution in 2:8 EtOH/H2O induced a hypsochromic shift of the UV-Vis absorption band from 360 nm to 340 nm accompanying distinct enhancement in the absorption intensity while addition of other metal ions failed to bring about substantial change in the absorption spectra. Addition of Hg2+ to the sensor solution also caused marked increase in the fluorescence emission intensity and most common competitive metal ions did not interfere with the selective sensing of Hg2+ ion by the sensor. The detection limit of Hg2+ ion by the probe was calculated to be 1.46 × 10-7 M and the probe could be utilized for selective detection of Hg2+ ion by fluorescence turn-on mode over a broad pH range of 1-11.

Abstract
In this study, an imidazole-coumarin based fluorescent probe was developed for the selective and sensitive detection of Ag+ in aqueous solution. Using a combination of Job plot, NMR titrations, and DFT calculations, the binding properties between Ag+ and the probe were deeply investigated, and the results revealed a 1:1 binding stoichiometry between the probe and Ag+ with a binding constant of 1.02 × 106 M-1. The detection limit was found to be 150 nM, which satisfies the requirement for the quantitative detection of Ag+ in real water samples. Moreover, the new probe, Ic, was successfully applied to sense Ag+ in HeLa and HepG2 cells as well as in C. elegans, indicating that it could be a useful tool for the environmental monitoring of Ag+ pollution. These results demonstrated that Ic could serve as a high-efficiency and low-cost fluorescent probe for tracking Ag+ in an aquatic environment and biological organisms.
