Configuration and molecular structure of 5-chloro-N-(4-sulfamoylbenzyl) salicylamide derivatives

Rapid diagnosis of cervical cancer based on serum FTIR spectroscopy and support vector machines

Cervical cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors among female gynecological diseases. This paper aims to explore the feasibility of utilizing serum Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, combined with machine learning and deep learning algorithms, to efficiently differentiate between healthy individuals, hysteromyoma patients, and cervical cancer patients. In this study, serum samples from 30 groups of hysteromyoma, 36 groups of cervical cancer, and 30 healthy groups were collected and FTIR spectra of each group were recorded. In addition, the raw datasets were averaged according to the number of scans to obtain an average dataset, and the raw datasets were spectrally enhanced to obtain an augmentation dataset, resulting in a total of three sets of data with sizes of 258, 96, and 1806, respectively. Then, the hyperparameters in the four kernel functions of the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model were optimized by grid search and leave-one-out (LOO) cross-validation. The resulting SVM models achieved recognition accuracies ranging from 85.0% to 100.0% on the test set. Furthermore, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) demonstrated a recognition accuracy of 75.0% to 90.0% on the test set. It can be concluded that the use of serum FTIR spectroscopy combined with the SVM algorithm for the diagnosis of cervical cancer has important medical significance.

Diestervinyl-functionalized acceptor-acceptor type dithienylethenes with efficient photochromic performance

Exploring novel dithienylethenes (DTEs) with efficient photochromism has drawn increasing attention in virtue of the potential applications for photoelectric functional materials. In this contribution, we presented two novel acceptor-acceptor (A-A) type DTE derivatives (4a and 4b) by incorporating the diestervinyl moieties with strong electron-withdrawing capacity into two sides of DTE skeleton. The corresponding structures were well confirmed by the NMR (¹H and ¹³C) and HRMS. When irradiated alternately with ultraviolet and visible light, 4a and 4b showed efficient photochromism in toluene, chloroform and DMSO, clearly implying a solvent-dependence feature. Moreover, excellent photoswitching behaviors were also observed in the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) film. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that strong Acceptor-Acceptor effect plays a dominative role in the efficient photochromic performance. Hence, this study will provide a useful guidance for developing high-performance DTE derivatives in multi-media.

Lignocellulosic Biomasses from Agricultural Wastes Improved the Quality and Physicochemical Properties of Frying Oils

In this work, the effects of using natural lignocellulosic-based adsorbents from sugarcane bagasse (SC), cornstalk piths (CP), and corn cob (CC) on the physicochemical properties and quality of fried oils were studied. The properties of lignocellulosic biomasses were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Moreover, the changes in the physicochemical properties of fresh, fried oils (for 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 h) and adsorbents-treated oils were examined. The XRD results revealed that SC and CP biomasses have more amorphous regions than CC biomass, which had the highest crystallinity percentage. The results also showed that lignocellulosic biomasses enhanced the quality of the used oils. SC was the most effective biomass to enhance the properties of the used sunflower oil. For instance, the acid value of oil samples fried for 20 h reduced from 0.63 ± 0.02 to 0.51 ± 0.02 mg KOH/g oil after SC biomass treatment. For the peroxide value, the SC biomass treatment reduced it from 9.45 ± 0.56 (fried oil for 20 h) to 6.91 ± 0.12 meq O₂/kg. Similarly, SC biomass adsorbent reduced the p-Anisidine Value (p-AV) of the used oil (20 h) from 98.45 ± 6.31 to 77.92 ± 3.65. Moreover, SC adsorbents slightly improved the lightness of the used oils (20 h). In conclusion, natural lignocellulosic biomasses, particularly SC, could be utilized as natural adsorbents to improve the oil quality. The results obtained from this study could help in developing sustainable methods to regenerate used oils using natural and cheap adsorbents.

Green Route for the Removal of Pb from Aquatic Environment

AIM AND OBJECTIVE

Wastewater treatment/remediation is a very important process that has a great environmental and economic impact. Therefore, it is crucial to innovate different methods to remove pollutants of different sources from wastewater. This work was conducted in order to study the removal of lead (Pb+2) from wastewater using microspheres of composites of sodium alginate, cellulose and chitosan, as well as using a cost-effective green route through composites of sodium alginate and dried water hyacinth.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Molecular modeling at B3LYP/6-31g(d,p) was utilized to study sodium alginate, cellulose and chitosan. Sodium alginate was cross-linked with calcium chloride to form microspheres, then both sodium alginate/cellulose and sodium alginate/chitosan were also crosslinked as 50/50 to form microspheres. The roots of the aquatic plant water hyacinth in dry form were added to the cross-linked sodium alginate for up to 70%. SEM and FTIR were employed to study the surface of the prepared microspheres and their structures respectively. Atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to study the levels of Pb.

RESULTS

Molecular modeling indicated that the blending of such structures enhances their ability to bind with surrounding molecules owing to their ability to form hydrogen bonds. SEM results indicated that homogeneous structures of cellulose and chitosan are deformed when blended with sodium alginate, and FTIR confirmed the proper formation of the desired blends. Microspheres from sodium alginate showed the ability to remove Pb+2 from wastewater. SEM indicated further deformation in the morphology with the roughness of sodium alginate/water hyacinth microspheres, while FTIR confirmed the uniform matrices of the microspheres. The removal of Pb+2 was enhanced because of the addition of dried water hyacinth's roots.

CONCLUSION

Modeling, experimental and kinetic data highlight sodium alginate/water hyacinth root as a green route to remediate Pb+2 from wastewater.

Weak Bonds Joint Effects Catalyze the Cleavage of Strong C-C Bond of Lignin-Inspired Compounds and Lignin in Air by Ionic Liquids

Oxidation of lignin to value-added aromatics through selective C-C bond cleavage via metal-free and mild strategies is promising but challenging. It was discovered that the cations of ionic liquids (ILs) could effectively catalyze this kind of strong bond cleavage by forming multiple weak hydrogen bonds, enabling the reaction conducted in air at temperature lower than 373 K without metal-containing catalysts. The cation [CPMim]⁺ (1-propylronitrile-3-methylimidazolium) afforded the highest efficiency in C-C bond cleavage, in which high yields (>90 %) of oxidative products were achieved. [CPMim]⁺ could form three ipsilateral hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atom of C=O and ether bonds at both sides of the C-C bond. The weak bonds joint effects could promote adjacent C-H bond cleave to form free radicals and thereby catalyze the fragmentation of the strong C-C. This work opens up an eco-friendly and energy-efficient route for direct valorization of lignin by enhancing IL properties via tuning the cation.

Molecular modeling analyses for graphene functionalized with Fe3O4 and NiO

Graphene has attracted great concern in recent years as one of the potential 2D materials in various applications. This work is devoted for assessing the feasibility of functionalizing 2D graphene sheets with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic metal oxides namely magnetite (Fe₃O₄) and nickel oxide (NiO). Molecular models of the proposed candidates are exposed to energy calculations at DFT level, in addition to geometry optimization processes at PM6 method. HOMO/LUMO orbitals, MESP maps and QSAR descriptors are calculated. Results ensure that graphene doped with NiO has the highest reactivity since it possesses the largest TDM and the smallest HOMO/LUMO band gap. MESP maps illustrate that the benzene rings of graphene are most probable to undergo nucleophilic interactions. Addition of Fe₃O₄ creates new negatively charged active sites that are ready for nucleophilic interactions. The calculated QSAR parameters demonstrate a hydrophobic nature for pure and modified graphene suggesting that they need further modification with further groups for usage in biological applications.
