A Schiff-base receptor based chromone derivate: Highly selective fluorescent and colorimetric probe for Al(III)

A highly efficient, selective, reversible and ultra-sensitive fluorescence "Turn-ON" chemosensor for aluminium ions by a novel Schiff base

The synthesis of a Schiff base-based chemosensor, denoted as H6L, was accomplished through the condensation reaction of Isophthalohydrazide and 2,6-dihydroxybenzaldehyde in an ethanol solvent. The resulting compound was further characterized using 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, as well as high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). Extensive research has been conducted on several facets of metal sensing phenomena, revealing that the Schiff base H6L demonstrates discerning and expeditious fluorescence sensing characteristics specifically towards Al (III) in acetonitrile. The purported method detects Al (III) can be ascribed to the suppression of photo-induced electron transfer (PET) and the enhanced chelation-induced fluorescence (CHEF). The stoichiometry of metal-ligand complexes (2:1) was determined using Job's plots titrations, HRMS and subsequently confirmed using NMR titration studies. The H6L sensors demonstrated remarkable fluorescence sensing capabilities in acetonitrile, with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.44 μM. This LOD is suitably low for the detection of Al3+, which is commonly found in many environmental and biological systems. Fluorescence lifetime measurement provides additional evidence of complexation of H6L with Al (III). The reversibility of the sensor was demonstrated through the introduction of pyrophosphate (PPi), which forms a complex with aluminium ions, thereby releasing the chemo sensor for subsequent utilization. The findings suggest that H6L has the potential to serve as a viable probe for the detection and identification of Al3+ ions.

Synthesis of a super-low detection limit fluorescent probe for Al3+ and its application in fluorescence imaging of zebrafish and cells

A novel fluorescent probe N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)-indole-3-formylhydrazine (JHK) was designed and synthesized based on the condensation reaction of indole-3-formylhydrazine and salicylaldehyde. The probe JHK solution could highly selectively recognize Al3+ by the obvious fluorescence enhancement (288-fold) after adding Al3+. And the probe solution with Al3+ had a very high fluorescence quantum yield (89.29 %). The detection limit was calculated to be 1.135 nM, which was significantly lower than many reported detection limits, indicating that the probe JHK had pretty good sensitivity. The ratio of JHK to Al3+ (1:1) and the sensing mechanism were determined by Job's plot, 1H NMR spectra, FTIR spectra, ESI-MS and Gaussian calculation. The probe solution and medium-speed filter paper were successfully used to make test papers for more convenient detection of Al3+. Furthermore, the probe JHK had been successfully applied to the detection of Al3+ in real water, zebrafish and living cells.

Diethylaminophenol appended pyrimidine bis hydrazone for the sequential detection of Al3+ and PPi ions

In this study, a novel easy-to-prepare diethylaminophenol appended pyrimidine bis hydrazone (HD) has been designed and developed. The probe exhibits excellent sequential sensing characteristics towards Al3+ and PPi ions. The emission studies, various spectroscopic techniques and lifetime results have been utilized to understand the binding mechanism of HD with Al3+ ions and, to discover the specificity as well as the efficacy of the probe in sensing Al3+ ions. The good association constant in addition to the lower detection limit values makes the probe effective for the detection of Al3+. The in-situ produced HD-Al3+ ensemble could consecutively detect PPi via a turn-off fluorescence response and the selectivity and sensitivity characteristics of the generated ensemble towards PPi were described based on the demetallation approach. The overall sensing property of HD was perfectly employed for constructing logic gates, real water, and tablet applications. Paper strips, as well as cotton-swab experiments, were also conducted inorder to check the practical utility of the synthesized probe.

"Lighting up" fluorescence precise recognition of Al3+ with an effective fluorescence detection using a Bisphenol A-based sensor

Although aluminum is a ubiquitous metal in the ecosystem and has numerous critical roles in both the medicinal and biological fields, human daily life is seriously threatened by its assorted harmful influences. By this virtue, tracking the amount of aluminum byrapid sensitive and selective recognition methodologies is of great importance. Based on this, a novel fluorescent chemosensor 4,4'-(propane-2,2-diyl)bis(2-(((-2-hydroxybenzylidene) hydrazineylidene)-methyl)phenol) (BFASA) capable of recognizing Al³⁺ in a medium was constructed via an easy Schiff-base reaction between bisphenol A-containing molecule and the salicylaldehyde. The metal-binding studies of BFASA indicated a drastically enhanced emission with color alteration from colorless to green establishing the utility of BFASA against monitoring of Al³⁺ and only Cu²⁺/Al³⁺ significantly enhanced the absorbance intensity of the probe solution at 433 and 406, respectively. Its ability to selectively sense Al³⁺ demonstrated "switch-on" fluorescence responses for Al³⁺ with a low detection limit (LOD) of 0.56 μM and good selectivity, and pH adaptation range (5-8). The stoichiometric ratio of BFASA against the Al³⁺ was verified by the Job's plot and TOF-MS analysis and determined as 1:2. To make the recognition process inexpensively, viable and straightforward, Smartphone application of BFASA was effectively applied to Al³⁺ sensing, which could benefit the on-site Al³⁺ recognition. In the fluorescence bio-imaging aspect, the BFASA could effectively monitor Al³⁺ in living cells.

Schiff Base Ligand 3-(-(2-Hydroxyphenylimino) Methyl)-4H-Chromen-4-One as Colorimetric Sensor for Detection of Cu2+, Fe3+, and V5+ in Aqueous Solutions

The ligand 3-(-(2-hydroxyphenylimino) methyl)-4H-chromen-4-one (SL) has been synthesized and examined as a chemosensor for some metal ions in aqueous solutions based on colorimetric analysis. Color changes were monitored using UV-visible spectroscopy. Binding stoichiometry and limit of detection (LOD) were estimated using titration experimentation based on UV-visible absorbance and Job's plot. The synthesized ligand was tested for selectivity in the presence of several cations and was examined for possible utility as a chemosensor in real water samples. The results indicated sensing ability and selectivity for Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺, and V⁵⁺. Stable complexes were formed between SL and Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺, and V⁵⁺, and the ligand-to-metal binding stoichiometry was found 2 : 1 in the SL-Cu²⁺ and SL-Fe³⁺ complexes, and 1 : 1 in the SL-V⁵⁺ complex. The results of LOD and bending constant were (7.03 μM, 1.37 × 10⁴ M^-1), (5.16 μM, 2.01 × 10⁴ M^-1), and (5.94 μM, 1.82 × 10⁴ M^-1) for Cu²⁺, Fe³⁺, and V⁵⁺, respectively.

A "Turn-On" fluorescent probe for detection and removal of Zn2+ in aqueous and its application in living cells

Using 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid hydrazine and 4-(diethylamino) salicylaldehyde. as raw materials, compound L with an acylhydrazones structure was synthesized. The structure of compound L was characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray single crystal diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The results show that Compound L can quickly and selectively recognize zinc ions in the H₂O/DMSO (V:V = 3:7) solvent system. After that, the spectral performance of probe L was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results show that the combination with Zn²⁺ can significantly enhance the fluorescence intensity of probe L while being almost unaffected by other coexisting ions. After that, Job's curve method, nuclear magnetic titration analysis, and mass spectrometry were used to study the binding mechanism of probe L and Zn²⁺. The results showed that probe L coordinated with Zn²⁺ is 1:1. The linear equations of different concentrations of Zn²⁺ and fluorescence intensity were obtained by fitting, and the detection limit of probe L for Zn²⁺ was determined to be 6.75 × 10^-9 mol/L. The experimental study of standard addition and recovery showed that probe L could be used for the quantitative detection of Zn²⁺ in natural water samples. After that, we prepared L-doped sodium alginate hydrogel (SAL). The research results show that SAL has obvious adsorption capacity for Zn²⁺ in solution, and the color change before and after adsorption can be easily distinguished by the naked eye under ultraviolet light. SEM-EDS study showed that the microscopic morphology and composition of SAL changed significantly before and after adsorption. This fluorescent probe can be used for detection and removal of Zn²⁺ in aqueous solution. Also, probe L is effective for sensing for zinc (II) in living tumor cells. Overall, this work allows us to obtain a great potential to be applied to detect and remove Zn²⁺.

A Pyrene-Tetrazole Fused Fluorescent Probe for Effective Real Time Detection Towards Aluminium Ion

We constructed a novel-binding site for metal ion detection using a fused tetrazole ring conjugated with aminopyrene (R). The designed structure of the molecule was successfully synthesized and determined the probe's selectivity by testing various metal ions and found that the probe effectively detects Al³⁺ ion visually. Checked the sensing ability of the probe with different approaches (fluorimetric and colorimetric), and the effectiveness is double confirmed. The added Al³⁺ ion to R procured a rapid change in color from yellowish orange to colorless. Under the UV lamp, a turn-on blue fluorescence was observed after adding aluminium ion, whereas the probe was non-fluorescent before detecting aluminium ion. The probable interface of the probe with aluminium ion has also been expected from HRMS spectral analysis results. The probe's utility in real-time monitoring of Al³⁺ ion in water is confirmed by a simple test kit prepared using filter paper. The kit showed a possible naked-eye detection with a notable color change, and when checked, the aluminium ion detected test kit under a UV lamp showed blue fluorescence.

A novel hydrazone-based fluorescent "off-on-off" probe for relay sensing of Ga3+ and PPi ions

A novel hydrazone-based fluorescent probe (E)-3-((2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)-4H-chromen-4-one (BTC) has been rationally designed and synthesized. BTC can subsequently detect Ga³⁺ and PPi ions through the absorption and emission off-on-off response with high specificity. Importantly, fluorescent probe BTC can well discriminate Ga³⁺ from Al³⁺ and In³⁺. The association constant (K) was calculated as 2.06 × 10⁴M^-1, and the limit of detection (LOD) was calculated as 4.88 × 10^-2μM. Competitive binding studies also illustrated good results of the probe BTC towards Ga³⁺. Job's plot and HRMS results substantiated the 1:1 stoichiometry between BTC and Ga³⁺ ion. The interaction binding mode of BTC with Ga³⁺ was proposed by HRMS, ¹H NMR spectral titration, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectral measurements. The combination of the restraint of the photo-induced electron transfer (PET) process and the chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) process is responsible for the fluorescence enhancement of this probe. The in situ chelated BTC-Ga³⁺ could further monitor pyrophosphate ion (PPi) by demetallization process with quenching fluorescence emission. Additionally, the BTC and BTC-Ga³⁺ showed good cell permeability and could detect Ga³⁺ and PPi ions in onioninner epidermal cells, respectively.

A fluorescent and colorimetric dual-recognition probe based on copper(II)-decorated carbon dots for detection of phosphate

In the present article, we report a novel fluorescent and colorimetric dual-signal sensing probe based on a CD-Cu²⁺ complex for the detection of the phosphate ion (Pi). The yellow fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CDs) were simply synthesized via one-step hydrothermal treatment of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and 4-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The method was based on the combination of the CDs and Cu²⁺ to form a coordination complex. Pi can capture Cu²⁺ on the surface of CDs, which brings about two kinds of signal change through competitive complexation, including fluorescence and UV-vis absorption. The probe could detect the Pi with a linear range of 0.01-1 mM with a detection limit of 3.75 μM for the fluorescence signal and a linear range of 0.01-1 mM with a detection limit of 4.38 μM for the colorimetric signal. And the change in absorption signal can be used to visually detect Pi. Furthermore, the proposed sensing system was successfully applied to determine Pi in practical water samples.

A Novel Schiff Base-Modified Dialdehyde Cellulose-Based Fluorescent Probe for Al3+ and Its Application in Environmental Analysis

Cellulose is the most abundant natural polymer with good biodegradability and biocompatibility. In this paper, a novel fluorescent probe DAC-SD-NA for aluminum (Al³⁺ ) detection is successfully synthesized based on dialdehyde cellulose (DAC). DAC-SD-NA exhibited a remarkable "turn-on" fluorescence response to Al³⁺ in a wide pH range, and the fluorescence color of DAC-SD-NA solution turned from colorless to bright blue at the presence of Al³⁺ . The detection limit for Al³⁺ is computed to be 6.06×10^-7 m. The reaction mechanism of DAC-SD-NA towards Al³⁺ is confirmed by Job's plot, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In view of DAC-SD-NA exhibited good sensitivity and selectivity, it is applied to detect Al³⁺ in real water. What's more, DAC-SD-NA-loaded fluorescent hydrogel can serve as a convenient tool for the detection of Al³⁺ .

Selective sensing of PPi by fluorogenic Al(III)-probe complex in aqueous medium

A newly designed Schiff base probe JN has been synthesized. It is highly selective and sensitive towards Al³⁺ in nearly 100% aqueous medium by exhibiting a dramatic "turn-on" fluorescence response at 495 nm (λ_ex = 450 nm). The sensing mechanism of JN towards Al³⁺ ions was proposed as the combination of PET, ICT, ESIPT, and CHEF processes according to spectra studies and theory calculations. The in situ generated mononuclear Al(III) complex JN-Al³⁺ could sequentially detect PPi ions by turn-off fluorescence response. The selectivity and sensitivity of the JN-Al³⁺ complex towards PPi ions are based on demetalization process. Interestingly, the fact that Al³⁺ can bind with 1, 2, or 3 PPi has been revealed by HRMS study. The probes JN and JN-Al³⁺ complexes were able to capture Al³⁺ and PPi ions, respectively, as demonstrated by fluorescence imaging of the adult zebrafish and onion inner epidermal cells samples.

TICT fluorescent probe for Al3+: Sequential detection of PPi, ATP and ADP in semi-aqueous medium and real-life applications

A ditopic Schiff base ligand, H₂L has been synthesized and characterized by all spectroscopic techniques. It is highly selective and specific towards Al³⁺ in semi aqueous medium (DMF/H₂O mixture) by exhibiting a drastic increase in the fluorescence intensity. The emission studies, spectroscopic data, life time and quantum yield results have been used to understand its binding mode, explore its specificity and establish its efficacy. The intensity difference is remarkable in physiological pH range. Due to its reversible behavior this ditopic fluorescent chemosensor can be used multiple times to make it cost effective. Detection limit for this chemosensor was found to be 0.65 μM. Experiments with TLC plates show that it can be used as a practical and portable sensor for studying environmental samples in real life. The L-Al³⁺ complex generated in the solution acts as a sensor to sequentially detect pyrophosphate groups present in inorganic pyrophosphates, ATP and ADP among other anions by turning off the fluorescence. Inhibit logic gate and its corresponding truth table has been developed to aid in further exploiting its multidimensional applications.

A highly selective acridine-based fluorescent probe for detection of Al3+ in alcoholic beverage samples

4,5-Bis(phtalimidomethyl)acridine (L) was studied as a chemosensor for metal ions in alcoholic matrices and showed to be selective for Al³⁺, through a linear fluorescence enhancement of 230% in the concentration range of 10-70 μmol L^-1. Benesi-Hildebrand and Job's formalisms indicated the formation of a 1:1 (Al³⁺:L) complex with a binding constant of 6.30 × 10³ L mol^-1. DFT/TDDFT calculations allowed access to the energies of frontier orbitals and could explain the fluorescence augmentation upon complex formation, due to the restraining of PET process. Limit of detection and limit of quantification (R² = 0.998, least squares method) are 1.130 and 3.768 μmol L^-1, respectively, and validation was verified based on the variation of several analytical conditions. Practical application in spiked Brazilian sugarcane spirit showed recovery of (84 ± 0.42)% with no effect of interfering ions.

Fluorescent schiff base probes for sequential detection of Al3+ and F- and cell imaging applications

Two novel Schiff-base fluorescent probers SQ and NQ based on 8-hydroxyquinoline moiety were designed and synthesized. The both probes were capable of binding with Al³⁺ by naked eye detection to produce a significant fluorescence enhancement response with a detection limit of 1.48 × 10^-8 and 4.23 × 10^-8 M, respectively. At the same time, the formed complexes SQ-Al³⁺ and NQ-Al³⁺ could sequentially detect F^-, and the detection limits of F^- were determined to be 1.64 × 10^-7 and 3.58 × 10^-8 M, respectively. The "off-on-off" fluorescence response process demonstrated that the binding were reversible. The probes were further successfully utilized to detect Al³⁺ and F^- in vitro PC12 cells.
