SERS study of Ag/FeS/4-MBA interface based on the SPR effect

Unique gap-related SERS behaviors ofp-aminothiophenol molecules absorbed on TiO2surface in periodic TiO2/Ni nanopillar arrays

We observed a unique interpillar gap-related surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) behavior ofp-aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules from periodic TiO2nanopillar arrays with three gap sizes of 191, 297 and 401 nm, which is completely different from that on Ag and Ni nanopillar arrays. Especially, the gap-size-dependent charge-transfer (CT) resonance enhancement from TiO2/Ni has been indicated through comparisons of variation trend of SERS intensities with inter-pillar gap size between TiO2/Ni and Ag/TiO2/Ni as well as Ni nanoarrays, and been confirmed by spectra of ultraviolet-visible absorption and photoluminescence. Results demonstrate that the CT resonance enhancement is more susceptible to the change of the gap size compared with the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) enhancement in TiO2/Ni nanoarrays. Hence, SPR and CT enhancement showing different variation trend and rate with the gap size that leads to a different relative contribution of CT resonance to the overall SERS enhancement as gap size changes, and consequently results in a unique gap-related SERS behavior for TiO2/Ni nanoarrays. The present study is not only helpful for investigating SERS mechanism for semiconductors but also providing a method to design and optimize periodic metal/semiconductor SERS substrates in a controllable way.

Flexible, foldable and transparent SERS film with high sensitivity and signal homogeneity via silver ion exchange and in-situ reduction

The adhesion between metal plasma and substrate was the key of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology. The preparation of ideal SERS substrate with multiple advantages such as high sensitivity and good signal reproducibility was still the focus of research. A flexible foldable and transparent fluorinated polyimide/silver NPs (FPI@Ag) SERS film was fabricated by the ion exchange and in-situ reduction method in this work. The effects of KOH hydrolysis time, AgNO3 ion exchange time and concentration, the type and concentration of reducing agents on the SERS performance of the FPI@Ag film were systematically discussed. As a result, the hydrolysis time of KOH affected the thickness of the metallic silver layer, the concentration of AgNO3 affected the size and spacing of Ag NPs, and the Raman signal of was remarkably enhanced when borane dimethylamine complex (DMAB) was used as reducing agent. When the detection limit of 4-Aminothiophenol was as low as 1 × 10-11 mol·L-1, the obvious Raman characteristic peak still appeared. The enhancement factor (EF) was up to 9.4 × 107. The linear quantification range was achieved in the range from 10-3-10-11 mol·L-1, R2 = 0.9987. In addition, we also performed multi-cycle bending and torsion test on the FPI@Ag film, and obtained stable Raman signals. The prepared FPI@Ag film can be attached to the surface of uneven samples, which can be used for on-site Raman detection and analysis.

Improving Sensitivity and Reproducibility of Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Biochips Utilizing Magnetoplasmonic Nanoparticles and Statistical Methods

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology has been widely recognized for its remarkable sensitivity in biochip development. This study presents a novel sandwich immunoassay that synergizes SERS with magnetoplasmonic nanoparticles (MPNs) to improve sensitivity. By taking advantage of the unique magnetism of these nanoparticles, we further enhance the detection sensitivity of SERS biochips through the applied magnetic field. Despite the high sensitivity, practical applications of SERS biochips are often limited by the issues of stability and reproducibility. In this study, we introduced a straightforward statistical method known as "Gaussian binning", which involves initially binning the two-dimensional Raman mapping data and subsequently applying Gaussian fitting. This approach enables a more consistent and reliable interpretation of data by reducing the variability inherent in Raman signal measurements. Based on our method, the biochip, targeting for C-reactive protein (CRP), achieves an impressive detection limit of 5.96 fg/mL, and with the application of a 3700 G magnetic field, it further enhances the detection limit by 5.7 times, reaching 1.05 fg/mL. Furthermore, this highly sensitive and magnetically tunable SERS biochip is easily designed for versatile adaptability, enabling the detection of other proteins. We believe that this innovation holds promise in enhancing the clinical applicability of SERS biochips.

Effect of hot electron induced charge transfer generated by surface plasmon resonance on Ag@Au/ITO/PNTP systems

The present study discusses the fabrication of a bimetallic material consisting of silver nanorods and gold nanospheres (designated Ag@Au), and its surface modification with 4-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) after deposition on an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass sheet, followed by laser irradiation at various wavelengths. The results indicate that the reduction of PNTP is more complete under irradiation at 532 nm due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effects of the gold and silver nanomaterials. Moreover, the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) of the PNTP adsorbed on the Ag@Au/ITO is found to be significantly stronger than that of PNTP adsorbed on Ag@Au alone, due to charge transfer (CT) at the interface. In addition, the SERS enhancement effect of the PNTP molecules on the Ag@Au/ITO substrate is optimal under 532 nm laser irradiation due to the hot electron-induced CT generated by the SPR effect. Thus, the system constructed herein combines the effects of SPR and CT, thereby assisting in a further understanding of the enhancement mechanism of SERS and, hence, the further development SERS research in metal-semiconductor-molecular systems.

Diagnosis accuracy of Raman spectroscopy in the diagnosis of breast cancer: a meta-analysis

To investigate the diagnostic efficiency of Raman spectroscopy for the diagnosis of breast cancer, we searched PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase for articles published from the database establishment to May 20, 2022. Pooled sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio, and area under the receiver pooled operating characteristic curve were derived for the included studies as outcome measures. The methodological quality was assessed according to the questionnaires and criteria suggested by the Diagnostic Accuracy Research Quality Assessment-2 tool. Sixteen studies were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of Raman spectroscopy for breast cancer diagnosis were 0.97 (95% CI, [0.92-0.99]) and 0.96 (95% CI, [0.91-0.98]). The diagnostic odds ratio was 720.89 (95% CI, [135.73-3828.88]) and the area under the curve of summary receiver operating characteristic curves was 0.99 (95% CI, [0.98-1]). Subgroup analysis revealed that all subgroup types in our analysis, including different races, sample types, diagnostic algorithms, number of spectra, instrument types, and laser wavelengths, turned out to have a sensitivity and specificity greater than 0.9. Significant heterogeneity was found between studies. Deeks' funnel plot demonstrated that publication bias was acceptable. This meta-analysis suggests that Raman spectroscopy may be an effective and accurate tool to differentiate breast cancer from normal breast tissue, which will help us diagnose and treat breast cancer.

Flexible surface-enhanced Raman scatting substrates: recent advances in their principles, design strategies, diversified material selections and applications

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is widely used as a powerful analytical technology in cutting-edge areas such as food safety, biology, chemistry, and medical diagnosis, providing ultra-fast, ultra-sensitive, nondestructive characterization and achieving ultra-high detection sensitivity even down to the single-molecule level. Development of Raman spectroscopy is strongly dependent on high-performance SERS substrates, which have long evolved from the early days of rough metal electrodes to periodic nanopatterned arrays building on solid supporting substrates. For rigid SERS substrates, however, their applications are restricted by sophisticated pretreatments for detecting solid samples with non-planar surfaces. It is therefore essential to reassert the principles in constructing flexible SERS substrates. Herein, we comprehensively review the state-of-the-art in understanding, preparing and using flexible SERS. The basic mechanisms behind the flexible SERS are briefly outlined, typical design strategies are highlighted and diversified selection of materials in preparing flexible SERS substrates are reviewed. Then the recent achievements of various interdisciplinary applications based on flexible SERS substrates are summarized. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for future evolution of flexible SERS and their applications are demonstrated. We propose new research directions focused on stimulating the real potential of SERS as an advanced analytical technique for commercialization.

Facile One-Step Deposition of Ag Nanoparticles on SiO2 Electrospun Nanofiber Surfaces for Label-Free SERS Detection and Antibacterial Dressing

The fabrication of highly active and free-standing surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates in a simple and low-cost manner has been a crucial and urgent challenge in recent years. Herein, SiO₂ nanofiber substrates modified with size-tunable Ag nanoparticles were prepared by the combination of electrospinning and in situ chemical reduction. The results demonstrate the presence and uniform adsorption of Ag nanoparticles on the SiO₂ matrix surface. The free-standing composite nanofibrous substrates show high-performance SERS response toward 4-mercaptophenol and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, and the detection limit can be as low as 10^-10 mol/L. Most importantly, the as-prepared substrate as a versatile SERS platform can realize label-free detection of bio-macromolecules of bacteria, i.e., Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Furthermore, the substrates also possess outstanding antibacterial activities against S. aureus and E. coli. Briefly, the significance of this study is that size-tunable Ag nanoparticles can be decorated on SiO₂ nanofiber surfaces with triethanolamine as a bridging and reducing agent through a one-pot reaction, and the as-prepared nanofibrous membranes are expected to act as a candidate for label-free SERS detection as well as antibacterial dressing.

Surface plasmon resonance induced charge transfer effect on the Ag-ZnSe-PATP system

This work demonstrated the effect of charge transfer (CT) induced by metal surface plasmon resonance (SPR) on surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We designed an Ag-ZnSe nanostructure and introduced p-aminothiophenol (PATP) molecules to form an Ag-ZnSe-PATP system. The proposed method compensates for the CT difficulty in wide-band-gap semiconductors, which was initiated by the SPR of Ag. The Raman intensity is enhanced differently depending on the action of excitation light of different wavelengths. The concept of the CT degree was introduced to analyze this intriguing phenomenon. The system constructed in this work combines the electromagnetic enhancement mechanism and the chemical enhancement mechanism, which helps further understand the SERS mechanism and provides important references for SERS research on wide-band-gap semiconductors.

Metal-semiconductor heterostructures for surface-enhanced Raman scattering: synergistic contribution of plasmons and charge transfer

After 45 years of its first observation, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has become an ultrasensitive tool applied in chemical analysis, materials science, and biomedical research. SERS-active nanomaterials, such as noble metals, transition metals, and semiconductors, have undergone extensive development. The hybridization of semiconductors with plasmonic metal nanomaterials is highly effective in boosting light harvesting and conversion, which enables the rapid growth of metal-semiconductor hybrid nanostructures in SERS-based research fields. With the combination of the unique photoelectric properties and giant SERS signals attributed to the synergistic contribution of plasmons and change transfer (CT), metal-semiconductor heterostructures allow diverse and novel applications of SERS in CT investigations for the rational design of photovoltaic devices and ultrasensitive chemical or biological sensing. In this review, we specifically discuss SERS-active metal-semiconductor heterostructures including their building blocks, enhancement mechanisms, and applications. Moreover, we highlight the current challenges and opportunities for future research in this field based on our recent studies and other related research.

Damping resonance and refractive index effect on the layer-by-layer sputtering of Ag and Al2O3 on the polystyrene template

In this study, an ordered metal oxide-metal composite system was designed. By changing the thickness of film of Ag/Al₂O₃ nanoparticles (NPs), the red and blue shifts of local surface plasma resonance (LSPR) were realized in the proposed system and discussed by damping resonance theory and Mie's scattering theory to demonstrating the relationship between wavelength (λ) and particle diameter (D). With the increasing of sputtering time of Ag, the SPR of Ag was red shifted under the influence of damped vibration, obtaining that square of wavelength (λ²) is proportional to D. The surface plasma resonance (SPR) of Ag/Al₂O₃ showed an obvious blue shift, and then red shift suddenly, which is affected by the competition between damping resonance and refractive index. When the blue shift occurs, the change of wavelength (∆λ) is exponentially related to the diameter (D). The modulation of LSPR of the proposed composite nano-metal materials will have a potential application in SPR sensor and surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).

Synthesis, Characterization and Dye Removal Behavior of Core-Shell-Shell Fe3O4/Ag/Polyoxometalates Ternary Nanocomposites

The ternary nanocomposites Fe3O4/Ag/polyoxometalates (Fe3O4/Ag/POMs) with core-shell-core nanostructure were synthesized by coating [Cu(C6H6N2O)2(H2O)]H2[Cu(C6H6N2O)2(P2Mo5O23)]·4H2O polyoxometalates on the surface of Fe3O4/Ag (core-shell) nanoparticles. The transmission electron microscopy/high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analyses show that the Fe3O4/Ag/POMs ternary nanocomposites reveal a core-shell-core nanostructure, good dispersibility, and high crystallinity. The vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and physical property measurement system (PPMS) demonstrated the good magnetic properties and superparamagnetic behavior of the nanocomposites at 300 K. The UV-vis spectroscopy displayed the broadband absorption of the Fe3O4/Ag/POMs with the maximum surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanostructure around 420 nm. The dye removal capacity of Fe3O4/Ag/POMs was investigated using methylene blue (MB) as a probe. Through adsorption and photocatalysis, the nanocomposites could quickly remove MB with a removal efficiency of 98.7% under the irradiation of visible light at room temperature. The removal efficiency was still as high as 97.5% even after six runs by magnetic separation of photocatalytic adsorbents after processing, indicating the reusability and high stability of the nanocomposites. These Fe3O4/Ag/POMs photocatalytic adsorbents with magnetic properties will hopefully become a functional material for wastewater treatment in the future.
