Abstract
To monitor the biological function of H2S in real time, this investigation demonstrated the design and synthesis of a novel fluorescent probe integrated with cyanine and 2,4-dinitrophenol for the qualitative and quantitative detection of H2S. An NIR sensitive sensor (FS-HS-1) was provided with a straightforward process. Spectroscopy experiments elucidated that FS-HS-1 could selectively detect H2S in a PBS solution (containing 40% acetonitrile) with a 111-fold fluorescence enhancement at 715 nm (ex. 605 nm). The response towards NaHS occurred in less than 2 min, and the detection limit was confirmed to be as low as 4.47 ± 0.11 nmol/L. Furthermore, the probe is capable of monitoring changes in exogenous H2S concentrations within living cells with confocal and 2P imaging.

Abstract
In order to better monitor the content of Fe3+ and H2S in the biological environment, two new fluorescent probes were designed and synthesized. With the addition of Fe3+, the strong fluorescence emission of two probes was significantly quenched due to the paramagnetic effect of Fe3+. With the further addition of S2-, the fluorescence intensity was quickly restored. Two probes showed high selectivity and strong sensitivity for the detection of Fe3+ and S2-, and the fluorescence intensity "ON-OFF-ON" was accompanied with the interaction process. At the same time, two probes displayed good anti-interference ability which was not interfered by the existence of other ions. In addition, two probes illustrated fast response time to Fe3+, S2- and small cytotoxicity to cells. Therefore, two probes can provide a potential ideal tool for detecting Fe3+ and H2S in organisms and the environment.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is not only a well-established toxic gas but also an important small molecule bioregulator in all kingdoms of life. In contemporary biology, H2S is often classified as a "gasotransmitter," meaning that it is an endogenously produced membrane permeable gas that carries out essential cellular processes. Fluorescent probes for H2S and related reactive sulfur species (RSS) detection provide an important cornerstone for investigating the multifaceted roles of these important small molecules in complex biological systems. A now common approach to develop such tools is to develop "activity-based probes" that couple a specific H2S-mediated chemical reaction to a fluorescent output. This Review covers the different types of such probes and also highlights the chemical mechanisms by which each probe type is activated by specific RSS. Common examples include reduction of oxidized nitrogen motifs, disulfide exchange, electrophilic reactions, metal precipitation, and metal coordination. In addition, we also outline complementary activity-based probes for imaging reductant-labile and sulfane sulfur species, including persulfides and polysulfides. For probes highlighted in this Review, we focus on small molecule systems with demonstrated compatibility in cellular systems or related applications. Building from breadth of reported activity-based strategies and application, we also highlight key unmet challenges and future opportunities for advancing activity-based probes for H2S and related RSS.

Abstract
In this study, zinc oxide@cupric oxide hollow nanospheres (ZnO@CuO HNS, 330 nm in diameter) were successfully prepared by a hard-template method using amino-phenolformaldehyde resin spheres (APF) as the templates. A new type of thin-film gas sensor toward hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was fabricated by means of drop-coating on the gold electrode of an alumina ceramic tube. The microstructure and morphology of the nanosphere composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the gas-sensing performance of the composites toward the detection of H2S were investigated. The ZnO@CuO nanocomposite with a hollow structure exhibited good gas-sensing properties. Under the optimum operating temperature of 260 °C, ambient temperature of 30 °C, and ambient humidity of 70%, the linear response of the sensor to H2S was in the concentration range of 0.1-100 ppm, and its detection limit reached 0.0611 ppm, with a quick response time of 78 s. Also, the sensor possessed good repeatability, selectivity, and stability. The long-term stability and run duration of such sensors were pronounced, with only a 1.9% reduction in the signal after the continuous monitoring of H2S gas in a pig farm for 18 months using Alibaba's cloud remote transmission system, which presents an important practical application prospect in atmosphere environment monitoring on livestock-raising fields.

Abstract
Novel spherical polymer nanoparticles were synthesized by hyperbranched polyethylenimine (hPEI) and 6-hydroxy-2-naphthaldehyde (HNA) via Schiff base reaction (one-pot reaction), which had great advantages in water solubility and green synthesis. Meanwhile, probe PEI-HNA could quickly detect Cu2+ in the range of 0-60 μM in 30 s with the detection limit of 243 nM. The fluorescence of PEI-HNA-Cu2+ could be recovered by the addition of S2- in 50 s with the detection limit of 227 nM. Based on the excellent optical properties, PEI-HNA has been used in the bioimaging of living cells with excellent cell penetrability and low toxicity. More importantly, PEI-HNA has been doped into filter paper, hydrogel, and nanofibrous film to prepare solid-phase sensors, displaying rapid response and excellent sensitivity. Moreover, the low-cost and simple preparation of these sensors offers great potential and possibilities for industrialization, which could help accelerate the development of sensors in environmental and biological fields.

Abstract
In this paper, a bifunctional tri-site fluorescent probe was designed for the first time not only for visualization and quantitative analysis of sensing H2S in wastewater by coupling paper strip and smartphone (Color recognizer, Xiyi Technology) but also for sensitively monitoring GSH in living cells, which relied on different emission channels and the pH of solutions. The recognition properties of GH towards H2S/GSH were satisfactorily demonstrated through fluorescence, UV-vis, 1H NMR and DFT calculations. More importantly, integrated with the paper strip, portable smartphone-sensing platform with a color recognizer app would accomplish cost-effective and rapid assays for colorimetric water quality testing, which displayed huge application potential in fields of environmental monitoring.

Abstract
Reactive sulfur species (RSS) and reactive selenium species (RSeS) are important substances for the maintenance of physiological balance. Imbalance of RSS and RSeS is closely related to a series of human diseases, so it is considered to be an important biomarker in early diagnosis, treatment, and stage monitoring. Fast and accurate quantitative analysis of different RSS and RSeS in complex biological systems may promote the development of personalized diagnosis and treatment in the future. One way to explore the physiological function of various types of RSS and RSeS in vivo is to detect them at the molecular level, and one of the most effective methods for this is to use fluorescent probes. Nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) reactions are commonly exploited as a detection mechanism for RSS and RSeS in fluorescent probes. In this review, we cover recent progress in fluorescent probes for RSS and RSeS based on SNAr reactions, and discuss their response mechanisms, properties, and applications. Benzenesulfonate, phenyl-O ether, phenyl-S ether, phenyl-Se ether, 7-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD), benzoate, and selenium-nitrogen bonds are all good detection groups. Moreover, based on an integration of different reports, we propose the design and synthesis of RSS- and RSeS-selective probes based on SNAr reactions, current challenges, and future research directions, considering the selection of active sites, the effect of substituents on the benzene ring, and the introduction of other functional groups.

Abstract
Currently, fluorescence analysis method has a good application in the detection and imaging of biomarkers and has become an important analytical method. Although there are many fluorescent probes for detecting hydrogen sulfide(H2S), they are mostly based on fluorophores which already existed, such as 1,8-naphthalimide, coumarin, rhodamine and their derivatives. Here, a new type of fluorescent molecule (BOTD) was synthesized and applied to the detection of H2S. The probe BOTD could quickly and sensitively detect H2S and turn on fluorescence. Moreover, the probe BOTD was successfully applied to the detection of exogenous and endogenous H2S in living cells, and may be expected to become a research tool for studying H2S-induced drugs.

Abstract
The activatable off-on near-infrared QCy7-based fluorogenic probes have emerged as powerful modalities for detecting and monitoring biological analytes and understanding their biological processes in cells and organisms. The use of biomarker-activated QCy7-based probes enables simple synthesis, minimum photo-damage to biological samples, and minimum background interference from biological systems. In this minireview, we aim to provide a rigorous but concise overview of activatable QCy7-based fluorogenic probes by reporting the significant progress made in recent years. The design strategies and the main applications of accurate detection and imaging of disease-related biomarkers (including ROS/RSS, enzymes, metal ions, and other related species) were reasonably analyzed and discussed. The potential challenges and prospects of activatable QCy7-based fluorogenic probes are also emphasized to further advance the development of new methods for biomarker detection and bioimaging.

Abstract
A fluorescent probe for the monitoring of H2S levels in living cells and organisms is highly desirable. In this regard, near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes have emerged as a promising tool. NIR-I and NIR-II probes have many significant advantages; for instance, NIR light penetrates deeper into tissue than light at visible wavelengths, and it causes less photodamage during biosample analysis and less autofluorescence, enabling higher signal-to-background ratios. Therefore, it is expected that fluorescent probes having emission in the NIR region are more suitable for in vivo imaging. Consequently, a considerable increase in reports of new H2S-responsive NIR fluorescent probes appeared in the literature. This review highlights the advances made in developing new NIR fluorescent probes aimed at the sensitive and selective detection of H2S in biological samples. Their applications in real-time monitoring of H2S in cells and in vivo for bioimaging of living cells/animals are emphasized. The selection of suitable dyes for designing NIR fluorescent probes, along with the principles and mechanisms involved for the sensing of H2S in the NIR region, are described. The discussions are focused on small-molecule and nanomaterials-based NIR probes.
