Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is not only a well-established toxic gas but also an important small molecule bioregulator in all kingdoms of life. In contemporary biology, H2S is often classified as a "gasotransmitter," meaning that it is an endogenously produced membrane permeable gas that carries out essential cellular processes. Fluorescent probes for H2S and related reactive sulfur species (RSS) detection provide an important cornerstone for investigating the multifaceted roles of these important small molecules in complex biological systems. A now common approach to develop such tools is to develop "activity-based probes" that couple a specific H2S-mediated chemical reaction to a fluorescent output. This Review covers the different types of such probes and also highlights the chemical mechanisms by which each probe type is activated by specific RSS. Common examples include reduction of oxidized nitrogen motifs, disulfide exchange, electrophilic reactions, metal precipitation, and metal coordination. In addition, we also outline complementary activity-based probes for imaging reductant-labile and sulfane sulfur species, including persulfides and polysulfides. For probes highlighted in this Review, we focus on small molecule systems with demonstrated compatibility in cellular systems or related applications. Building from breadth of reported activity-based strategies and application, we also highlight key unmet challenges and future opportunities for advancing activity-based probes for H2S and related RSS.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is closely linked to not only environmental hazards, but also it affects human health due to its toxic nature and the exposure risks associated with several occupational settings. Therefore, detection of this pollutant in water sources has garnered immense importance in the analytical research arena. Several research groups have devoted great efforts to explore the selective as well as sensitive methods to detect H2S concentrations in water. Recent studies describe different strategies for sensing this ubiquitous gas in real-life water samples. Though many of the designed and developed H2S detection approaches based on the use of organic small molecules facilitate qualitative/quantitative detection of the toxic contaminant in water, optical detection has been acknowledged as one of the best, attributed to the simple, highly sensitive, selective, and good repeatability features of the technique. Therefore, this review is an attempt to offer a general perspective of easy-to-use and fast response optical detection techniques for H2S, fluorimetry and colorimetry, over a wide variety of other instrumental platforms. The review affords a concise summary of the various design strategies adopted by various researchers in constructing small organic molecules as H2S sensors and offers insight into their mechanistic pathways. Moreover, it collates the salient aspects of optical detection techniques and highlights the future scope for prospective exploration in this field based on the limitations of the existing H2S probes.

Abstract
In eutrophic water bodies, sulfides are closely related to the growth of cyanobacteria and the production of microcystin-LR (MC-LR). To date, the underlying interaction mechanism between a sulfides and MC-LR remains controversial. Thus, visually presenting the distribution characteristics of sulfides and MC-LR in contaminated water is crucial. Here, we propose a novel and expeditious practical approach, utilizing fluorescence probe technology, to assess the distribution characteristics of MC-LR and sulfur in natural lakes. We have developed novel probes, pib2, to detect HSO3- and HS-, and pib18, to simultaneously identify MC-LR and sulfides. Through correlation analysis of fluorescence data and physicochemical indicators at sampling points, it is found that fluorescence data has good correlation with sulfides and MC-LR, and speculated that pib2 and pib18 may be able to detect sulfides and MC-LR in lakes. Using this method, we rapidly obtained the distribution of MC-LR and sulfur in Qilu and Erhai Lakes. Notably, for the first time, we rapidly displayed the distributions of sulfides and MC-LR across lakes by the fluorescent probe technology.

Abstract
Dissolved oxygen (O2) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are two important indicators of water quality, their levels are of intimate dependence and varying over time. It is of great significance to monitoring of dissolved O2 and H2S simultaneously in natural water, yet has not been reported because of lack of effective approaches. In this work, a portable electrochemical microsensor was developed for simultaneously quantifying dissolved O2 and H2S. Here, Pd@Ni nanoparticles (NPs) were self-assembled onto the microelectrode by MXene titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx), which were of responsibility towards O2 and H2S detection within single electrochemical reduction process. On this regard, Pd NPs facilitated catalyzing the electrochemical reduction of O2, while Ni NPs were employed as recognition element for H2S detection. With the electrochemical reduction sweep, the initial application of a positive voltage rendered the Ni to be oxidized to be Ni ions, contributing to their following capture of surrounding S2- to form nickel sulfide. Nickel sulfide with highly electrochemical activity were capable of generating detecting reduction current. In consequence, the as-designed microsensor can simultaneously determine O2 concentrations ranging from 36 to 318 μM and H2S levels ranging from 0.1 to 2.5 μM with high selectivity. Finally, the portable microsensor was successfully applied to simultaneous detection dissolved O2 and H2S in natural water in-site, the results of which were comparable to the classical methods.

Abstract
Using 4-([2,2': 6', 2'- terpyridin] -4'-yl) -N, N-dimethylaniline (tdl) as auxiliary ligand and 6-azido-2,2'-bipyridine (abp) as recognition ligand, a europium complex fluorescent probe Eu(4-([2,2': 6', 2'-terpyridin] -4' -yl) -N, N-dimethylaniline)2-6-azido-2,2'-bipyridine Eu(tdl)2abp for efficient and specific recognition of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was successfully synthesized and characterized by NMR and MS. Eu(tdl)2abp represented "on-off" fluorescence signals for H2S and its color changes could be identified with naked eyes. Eu(tdl)2abp had short response time (2 min) to H2S, high selectivity and good anti-interference, large stokes shift (207 nm). In various samples, when H2S existed, the azide group was reduced to amine group, resulting in closed fluorescence signal, and the fluorescence intensity reached the degree of quenching without being affected by other interference. At the same time, there was a good linear relationship between relative fluorescence intensity and H2S concentration with the detection limit (LOD) of 0.64 μM. The sensing mechanism of Eu(tdl)2abp to detect H2S was characterized by 1H NMR and HR-MS. Eu(tdl)2abp was used with success for the sensitive detection of H2S in natural water and living cells.

Abstract
A dual-readout immunosensor coupled with electrochemical impedance and temperature signal was successfully proposed to detect autoimmune hepatitis markers (ASGPR). Nb2C MXene with excellent conductivity, abundant surface functional groups, and extraordinary photothermal conversion efficiency, was designed to be a multifunctional biological probe, whose specific binding with antigen enhanced steric hindrance to generate electrochemical impedance signal, and at the same time, it had a strong optical response in the near-infrared band to achieve temperature output. In addition, poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) was a temperature-sensitive polymer, which was adopted as the sensing matrix. When the multifunctional probe was specifically bound to the antigen, under 808-nm laser irradiation, the captured Nb2C MXene achieved photothermal conversion to increase the electrode surface temperature, and the conformation of PNIPAM changed from a free spiral to a spherical shape, further realizing double amplification of the EIS signal. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the impedance values and the temperature changes increased proportionally with the increase of the ASGPR concentration from 10-5 to 1 ng/mL, and the detection limit of the immunosensor was 3.3 × 10-6 ng/mL. The established dual-readout immunosensor exhibited good selectivity and acceptable stability and provided an effective detection method for autoimmune hepatitis marker detection.

Abstract
In this study, we demonstrate a colorimetric approach for the detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in water samples with high sensitivity. Firstly, copper-metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) were synthesized by ultrasonic-assisted hydrothermal method, presenting a maximum absorption peak at 700 nm. It was found that Cu-MOFs could react with H2S to form a copper-sulfur complex along with a decrease of the absorption peak at 700 nm and a visible color change from blue to tan. Under the optimal reaction conditions, the absorption intensity at 700 nm was linear with H2S concentration in a range of 0.05-2 mM (R2 = 0.9928), providing a detection limit of 22 μM. Furthermore, the method was successfully applied to the detection of H2S in lake water samples with a recovery rate between 94.4% and 112.6%. In addition, a practical and portable device for on-site H2S detection was designed by using agarose hydrogels, and a simple colorimetric detection method based on a smartphone was developed. This analytical method showed good selectivity for H2S compared to other interfering substances, and the feasibility of the agarose hydrogel-based device was proved by the determination of H2S in real lake water samples.

Abstract
A new long-wavelength fluorescent probe 1 that could specifically identify H2S has been successfully synthesized and applied for imaging H2S in zebrafish. Probe 1 was readily prepared by featuring nitrobenzene as the recognition unit coupled to resorufin. The fluorescence off-on response is based on the fact that H2S can reduce the nitro group to an amino group, followed by the 1,6-rearrangement-elimination and the release of resorufin. By evaluating the application abilities of probe 1 in vivo and vitro, it is shown that probe 1 has high sensitivity and selectivity to H2S, low background fluorescence interference, with a low detection limit of 17.30 μM. Notably, the occurrence of the reaction can be observed by the naked eye, and the color of the solution changes from yellow to pink. More importantly, it is the first time that using paper chips as carrier to detect H2S, which lays a foundation for the practical application of detecting H2S. The excellent analysis and application capabilities of probe 1 make it an effective tool for further application in practice.

Abstract
Leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) is known as an important potential biomarker for liver malignancy and it is urgent to develop an intuitive and effective method to monitor the activity of LAP in liver cancer. Although, numerous LAP fluorescent probes had been developed, it is still a challenge to detect LAP activity in liver cancer. Herein, combained with the DFT, we reported a novel galactose-appended hepatoma-specific ratiometric fluorescent probe (Gal-QL-Leu) based on quinoline group for imaging and tracing LAP in liver tumor cells. Probe Gal-QL-Leu demonstrated a obvious ratiometric characteristics, better selectivity, good biocompatibility and high sensitivity. Moreover, the selective imaging of LAP in HepG2, HCT116, A549 and HeLa cells had been achieved with probe Gal-QL-Leu, demonstrating good application prospect in the detection of LAP activity in liver tumor cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is currently considered among the endogenously produced gaseous molecules that exert various signaling effects in mammalian species. It is the third physiological gasotransmitter discovered so far after NO and CO. H2S was originally ranked among the toxic gases at elevated levels to humans. Currently, it is well-known that, in the cardiovascular system, H2S exerts several cardioprotective effects including vasodilation, antioxidant regulation, inhibition of inflammation, and activation of anti-apoptosis. With an increasing interest in monitoring H2S, the development of analysis methods should now follow. AIM OF REVIEW This review stages special emphasis on the several analytical technologies used for its determination including spectroscopic, chromatographic, and electrochemical methods. Advantages and limitations with regards to the application of each technique are highlighted with special emphasis on its employment for H2S in vivo measurement i.e., biofluids, tissues. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS AND IMPORTANT FINDINGS OF REVIEW Fluorescence methods applied for H2S measurement offer an attractive non-invasive and promising approach in addition to its selectivity, however they cannot be considered as H2S-specific probes. On the other hand, colorimetric assays are among the most common methods used for in vitro H2S detection, albeit their employment in vivo H2S measurement has not yet been possible . Separation techniques such as gas or liquid chromatography offer higher selectivity compared to direct spectrophotometric or fluorescence methods especially for suitable for endpoint H2S measurements i.e. plasma or tissue samples. Despite all the developed analytical procedures used for H2S determination, the need for highly selective, much work should be devoted to resolve all the pitfalls of the current methods.

Abstract
Detection of H2S to analyze some diseases in living lives demands fast response, high selectivity and biocompatibility. Here we designed an azide containing coumarin attached with 8-aminoquinoline via amide backbone (ACAQ) fluorophore as the H2S sensing probe. Excellent response time of 6 min, high sensitivity with the limit of detection (LOD) of 14.6 nM and high selectivity with other possible interferences are revealed for ACAQ after characterized by spectroscopy, 1H NMR titration and LC-MS measurements. The sensing strategy is explained by amide-iminol tautomerism and azide reduction. In addition, the successful visualization measurement suggests the practicability of the probe ACAQ for H2S detection in live samples.
