White light emission from a single plant source extract with tunable photoluminescence

Natural Pigments-Based Two-Component White Light Emitting Systems

In this paper, a new class of two component white light emitting systems viz, JaB (java plum + beetroot) {I}, and CaB (carrot + beetroot) {II} were developed through resonance energy transfer (RET) phenomenon by using a fruit (java plum) and two vegetable (carrot and beetroot) extracts. In these white light emitting systems, java plum and carrot are the donors while beetroot is the acceptor. The primary fluorescent pigments present in the natural extracts (i.e., anthocyanin in java plum, β-carotene in carrot, and betanin in beetroot) were responsible for the white light emission. The CIE (Commission Internationale d'Eclairage) coordinates for I and II were {0.32, 0.34} and {0.33, 0.33}, respectively, in solution phase. Interestingly, the white light emission (WLE) was also achieved in agar-agar gel medium. In gel medium, the CIE values were {0.31, 0.34} and {0.33, 0.32} for I and II, respectively. The donor-acceptor distance (r) for I and II were found to be 0.5 and 0.4 nm, respectively. Furthermore, the rate of energy transfer was also quantified with the values of 2.78 × 109 s-1 for JaB (I) and 1.02 × 108 s-1 for CaB (II) systems. The mechanistic investigation of the two white light systems was further supported by DFT studies.

Excitation-Dependent Multicolour Luminescence of Organic Materials: Internal Mechanism and Potential Applications

Excitation-dependent emission (Ex-de) materials have been of considerable academic interest and have potential applications in real life. Such multicolour luminescence is a characteristic exception to the ubiquitously accepted Kasha's rule. This phenomenon has been increasingly presented in some studies on different luminescence systems; however, a systematic overview of the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon is currently absent. Herein, we resolve this issue by classifying multicolour luminescence from single chromophores and dual/ternary chromophores, as well as multiple emitting species. The underlying processes are described based on electronic and/or geometrical conditions under which the phenomenon occurs. Before we present it in categories, related photophysical and photochemical foundations are introduced. This systematic overview will provide a clear approach to designing multicolour luminescence materials for special applications.

Exploration of yellow-emitting phosphors for white LEDs from natural resources

White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used in various lighting fields as a part of energy-efficient technology. However, some shortcomings of luminescent materials for white LEDs, such as complexity of synthesis, high cost, and harmful impact on the environment, limit their practical applications to a large extent. In this respect, the present work aims to study the ability of using Berberine (BBR) chloride extracted from Rhizoma coptidis and Phellodendron Chinese herbs as yellow phosphor for white LEDs. For this, white LEDs were successfully fabricated by applying 0.006 g of BBR chloride onto the blue LED chips (450 nm). The produced LEDs exhibited good luminescence properties at a voltage of 2.4 V along with eco-friendly characteristics and low cost. The Commission International de l'Eclairage chromaticity, the correlated color temperature, and the color rendering index were determined to be (${x} = {0.32}$, ${y} = {0.33}$), 5934 K, and 74, respectively. Therefore, BBR chloride is a suitable environmentally friendly and easily accessible yellow phosphor for white LEDs.
