Sensitive and selective colorimetric detection of Cu (II) in water samples by thiazolylazopyrimidine-functionalized TiO2 nanoparticles

Electrochemical and Colorimetric Nanosensors for Detection of Heavy Metal Ions: A Review

Human exposure to acute and chronic levels of heavy metal ions are linked with various health issues, including reduced children's intelligence quotients, developmental challenges, cancers, hypertension, immune system compromises, cytotoxicity, oxidative cellular damage, and neurological disorders, among other health challenges. The potential environmental HMI contaminations, the biomagnification of heavy metal ions along food chains, and the associated risk factors of heavy metal ions on public health safety are a global concern of top priority. Hence, developing low-cost analytical protocols capable of rapid, selective, sensitive, and accurate detection of heavy metal ions in environmental samples and consumable products is of global public health interest. Conventional flame atomic absorption spectroscopy, graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy, atomic emission spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, and X-ray fluorescence have been well-developed for HMIs and trace element analysis with excellent but varying degrees of sensitivity, selectivity, and accuracy. In addition to high instrumental running and maintenance costs and specialized personnel training, these instruments are not portable, limiting their practicality for on-demand, in situ, field study, or point-of-need HMI detection. Increases in the use of electrochemical and colorimetric techniques for heavy metal ion detections arise because of portable instrumentation, high sensitivity and selectivity, cost-effectiveness, small size requirements, rapidity, and visual detection of colorimetric nanosensors that facilitate on-demand, in situ, and field heavy metal ion detections. This review highlights the new approach to low-cost, rapid, selective, sensitive, and accurate detection of heavy metal ions in ecosystems (soil, water, air) and consumable products. Specifically, the review highlights low-cost, portable, and recent advances in smartphone-operated screen-printed electrodes (SPEs), plastic chip SPES, and carbon fiber paper-based nanosensors for environmental heavy metal ion detection. In addition, the review highlights recent advances in colorimetric nanosensors for heavy metal ion detection requirements. The review provides the advantages of electrochemical and optical nanosensors over the conventional methods of HMI analyses. The review further provides in-depth coverage of the detection of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), mercury (Hg), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) ions in the ecosystem, with emphasis on environmental and biological samples. In addition, the review discusses the advantages and challenges of the current electrochemical and colorimetric nanosensors protocol for heavy metal ion detection. It provides insight into the future directions in the use of the electrochemical and colorimetric nanosensors protocol for heavy metal ion detection.

Anthocyanin-induced color changes in bacterial cellulose nanofibers for the accurate and selective detection of Cu(II) in water samples

The environment and our health are negatively impacted by heavy metal ions, like Cu(II). The present study developed a green and effective metallochromic sensor that detects copper (Cu(II)) ions in solution and solid state using anthocyanin extract from black eggplant peels embedded in bacterial cellulose nanofibers (BCNF). Cu(II) is quantitatively detected by the sensing method with detection limits between 10-400 ppm and 20-300 ppm in solution and solid state, respectively. In the solution state, we depicted a sensor for Cu(II) ions in aqueous matrices in the pH range from 3.0 to 11.0, with the capability to produce a visual color change from brown to light blue and dark blue depending on the Cu(II) concentration. Additionally, BCNF-ANT film can act as a sensor for Cu(II) ions in the pH range of 4.0-8.0. Neutral pH was selected from the standpoint of high selectivity. It was found that visible color changed when Cu(II) concentration was increased. Bacterial cellulose nanofibers modified with anthocyanin were characterized with ATR-FTIR and FESEM. Various metal ions, including Pb²⁺, Co²⁺, Zn²⁺, Ni²⁺, Al³⁺, Ba²⁺, Hg²⁺, Mg²⁺, and Na⁺, were used to challenge the sensor to determine its selectivity. Anthocyanin solution and BCNF-ANT sheet were employed in the actual tap water sample successfully. The results also clarified that the various foreign ions did not significantly interfere with Cu(II) ions detection at optimum conditions. Compared to previously developed sensors, no electronic components, trained personnel, or sophisticated equipment were needed to apply the colorimetric sensor developed in this research. Cu(II) contamination in food matrices and water can be monitored on-site easily.

Flexible-fabricated sensor module with programmable magnetic actuators coupled to L-cysteine functionalized Ag@Fe3O4 complexes for Cu2+ detection in fish tissues

Heavy metal contamination for seafood, particularly fish, is arising great concerns, and consequentially it is necessary to develop a simple and direct detection method. In this work, Ag@Fe₃O₄ is successfully prepared by simple solvothermal method, and we present a flexible-fabricated sensor module with assembled programmable magnetic actuators. The resulting sensor integrates a three-electrode system with two programmable magnetic actuators at the bottom of the device, which regulates the amount of current by adjusting the brake to control the adsorption force and vibration. The L-Cysteine functionalized Ag@Fe₃O₄ is coated on the surface of the electrode, then the Cu²⁺ is dropped into the reaction tank. Its performance is studied by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the key experimental conditions such as deposition potential, deposition time, and electrolyte pH are gradually optimized. Under optimal conditions, Cu²⁺ can be detected over a wide linear range (0.01 ~ 4 μM) and at a low LOD (0.34 nM). The results show that the proposed method has a good application prospect in the detection of Cu²⁺. This method is successfully applied to Cu²⁺ analysis in fish samples with an acceptable recovery of 93 ~ 102%.

Diverse biotechnological applications of multifunctional titanium dioxide nanoparticles: An up-to-date review

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles (NPs) are one of the topmost widely used metallic oxide nanoparticles. Whether present in naked form or doped with metals or polymers, TiO₂ NPs perform immensely important functions. However, the alteration in size and shape by doping results in improving the physical, chemical, and biological behaviour of TiO₂ NPs. Hence, the differential effects of various TiO₂ nanostructures including nanoflakes, nanoflowers, and nanotubes in various domains of biotechnology have been elucidated by researchers. Recently, the exponential growth of research activities regarding TiO₂ NPs has been observed owing to their chemical stability, low toxicity, and multifaceted properties. Because of their enormous abundance, plants, humans, and environment are inevitably exposed to TiO₂ NPs. These NPs play a significant role in improving agricultural attributes, removing environmental pollution, and upgrading the domain of nanomedicine. Therefore, the currently ongoing studies about the employment of TiO₂ NPs in enhancement of different aspects of agriculture, environment, and medicine have been extensively discussed in this review.

Tuning the Sensing Properties of N and S Co-Doped Carbon Dots for Colorimetric Detection of Copper and Cobalt in Water

In this study, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NS-CDs) were investigated for the detection of heavy metals in water through absorption-based colorimetric response. NS-CDs were synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method and characterized by TEM, STEM-coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, NMR, and IR spectroscopy. Addition of Cu(II) ions to NS-CD aqueous solutions gave origin to a distinct absorption band at 660 nm which was attributed to the formation of cuprammonium complexes through coordination with amino functional groups of NS-CDs. Absorbance increased linearly with Cu(II) concentration in the range 1–100 µM and enabled a limit of detection of 200 nM. No response was observed with the other tested metals, including Fe(III) which, however, appreciably decreased sensitivity to copper. Increase of pH of the NS-CD solution up to 9.5 greatly reduced this interference effect and enhanced the response to Cu(II), thus confirming the different nature of the two interactions. In addition, a concurrent response to Co(II) appeared in a different spectral region, thus suggesting the possibility of dual-species multiple sensitivity. The present method neither requires any other reagents nor any previous assay treatment and thus can be a promising candidate for low-cost monitoring of copper onsite and by unskilled personnel.

Fabrication of the Ni-based composite wires for electrochemical detection of copper(Ⅱ) ions

Copper ions (Cu²⁺) pollution in the water environment poses a great threat to the health function of life-sustaining metabolic activities. However, the current detection methods need relatively expensive instruments, complex operation procedures and long time, so a facile and direct detection method is desired to be developed. In this work, the Ni-based composite wires with p-n junction (the Ni/NiO/ZnO/Chitosan wire) and Schottky junction (the Ni/NiO/Au/Chitosan wire) were fabricated, and the barrier driven electrochemical sensing mechanism was studied. The direct and facile detection of Cu²⁺ was achieved with a wide linear range (0-6000 nM) and a low LOD (0.81 nM). The excellent stability and recovery in real water samples made the Ni-based composite wires a promising candidate for the practical application. The interfacial barriers of semiconductor can be used as a special sensing factor to develop novel sensors.
