Modulation of chiral spectral deflection by van der Waals force-induced molecular electropolarization in catenane oligomers

The striking chiral optical properties of carbon nanostructures are closely related to the precise three-dimensional spatial arrangement (interaction) of carbon atoms. This work investigated the chiral optical properties of three different structures of all-benzene catenane and trefoil knot regulated by van der Waals (vdW) forces using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and wave function analysis. We systematically illustrate how molecular electrical polarization modulates the chiral optical deflection of alkane oligomers under the induction of van der Waals forces. In this work, the UV-vis spectra, transition density matrices (TDM), and electron-hole density diagrams of three molecules have been studied. Combined with a visualization method to represent the effect of molecular polarization on transition electric/magnetic dipole moments (TEDMs\TMDMs), the results show that vdW interactions can induce chirality deflection in polymers. This mechanism provides a clear direction for designing polymers with specific chirality: by modifying the structure, vdW interactions can be generated in specific regions, and then the chirality of the molecule can be precisely regulated. This will help us to establish a strategy for precisely-oriented design of chiral optical materials, and provide guidance for the application and development of optoelectronic materials in specific fields.

Super-Exchange Charge Transfer in One-Photon and Two-Photon Absorption of Multibranched Compounds

In this work, density functional theory is used to study organic molecules in a donor-acceptor (D-A) system centered on phenothiazine with strip and trigonal structures. The transition modes of the one-photon absorption (OPA) and two-photon absorption (TPA) processes of the two molecules are studied. The calculations show that the molar absorption coefficient of OPA for trigonal molecule TPPO and the cross section of TPA are both larger than those for strip molecule M1 due to the increase in the number of branches of the system. A special local excitation-enhanced charge-transfer excitation appears in strip-type molecule M1. In the charge-transfer process of trigonal D-A structure molecule TPPO, there are not only local excitation-enhanced charge-transfer excitation but also super-exchange charge transfer between the three branches that occurs due to the increase in the planarity of the system.

Optical Properties of Artemisinin and Its Derivatives

Artemisinin and its derivatives are of great research value in biology. In this work, we study their chiral and optical properties. The multidimensional multifunction analysis method is used to analyze the linear and nonlinear optical processes (one-photon and two-photon absorption: OPA and TPA), electronic circular dichroism (ECD), and Raman optical activity (ROA) mechanisms under light excitation. Transition dipole moments (TDMs) and charge difference density (CDD) are used to describe the electromagnetic interaction between ECD and ROA when a substance is excited by light. The theoretical research results of the study show that the dioxygen atoms provide an intermediary for the transfer between charges and also enhance the role of the TDMs. This generalized chiral theory can not only explain the traditional sources of chirality but also distinguish whether the molecule has chirality when the chiral center is not obvious. By analyzing ROA and different vibration modes, we can clearly observe that each part of the molecule responds differently when excited.
