Spectroscopy, lifetime, and charge-displacement of the methanol-noble gas complexes: An integrated experimental-theoretical investigation

σ-Hole, lone-pair-hole, and π-hole site-based interactions in aerogen-comprising complexes: a comparative study

Herein, the potential of ZO3 and ZF2 aerogen-comprising molecules (where Z = Ar, Kr, and Xe) to engage in σ-, lp-, and π-hole site-based interactions was comparatively studied using various ab initio computations. For the first time, a premier in-depth elucidation of the external electric field (EEF) influence on the strength of the σ-, lp-, and π-hole site-based interactions within the ZO3/ZF2⋯NH3 and ⋯NCH complexes was addressed using oriented EEF with disparate magnitude. Upon the energetic features, σ-hole site-based interactions were noticed with the most prominent preferability in comparison to lp- and π-hole analogs. This finding was ensured by the negative interaction energy values of -11.65, -3.50, and -2.74 kcal mol-1 in the case of σ-, lp-, and π-hole site-based interactions within the XeO3⋯ and XeF2⋯NH3 complexes, respectively. Detailedly, the strength of the σ- and lp-hole site-based interactions directly correlated with the atomic size of the aerogen atoms and the magnitude of the positively oriented EEF. Unexpectedly, an irregular correlation was noticed for the interaction energies of the π-hole site-based interactions with the size of the π-hole. Interestingly, the π-hole site-based interactions within Kr-comprising complexes exhibited higher negative interaction energies than the Ar- and Xe-comprising counterparts. Notwithstanding, a direct proportion between the interaction energies of the π-hole site-based interactions and π-hole size was obtained by employing EEF along the positive orientation with high strength. The present outcomes would be a fundamental basis for forthcoming progress in studying the σ-, lp-, and π-hole site-based interactions within aerogen-comprising complexes and their pertinent applications in materials science and crystal engineering.

Uptake of Hydrogen Bonding Molecules by Benzene Nanoparticles

The uptake of molecules on nanometer-size clusters of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is important for the condensation of water on PAH aerosols in the atmosphere and for ice mantle growth on nanoparticles in the interstellar medium. We generate benzene clusters Bz_N of mean size N̅ ≈ 300 (radius R̅ ≈ 2.2 Å) as a model system for the PAH nanoparticles. Using molecular beams and mass spectrometry detection, we investigate the uptake of water, methanol, and ethanol by these clusters. All picked up molecules are highly mobile on Bz_N and generate clusters within <3 ms. The relative uptakes for the different investigated molecules can be directly compared and quantified. Water molecules exhibit the lowest relative pickup probability that is ∼30% lower than those for methanol and ethanol, which are approximately the same.

Noble-gas compounds: A general procedure of bonding analysis

This paper accounts for a general procedure of bonding analysis that is, expectedly, adequate to describe any type of interaction involving the noble-gas (Ng) atoms. Building on our recently proposed classification of the Ng-X bonds (X = binding partner) [New J. Chem. 44, 15536 (2020)], these contacts are first distinguished into three types, namely, A, B, or C, based on the topology of the electron energy density H(r) and on the shape of its plotted form. Bonds of type B or C are, then, further assigned as B-loose (B^l) or B-tight (B^t) and C-loose (C^l) or C-tight (C^t) depending on the sign that H(r) takes along the Ng-X bond path located from the topological analysis of ρ(r), particularly at around the bond critical point (BCP). Any bond of type A, B^l/B^t, or C^l/C^t is, finally, assayed in terms of contribution of covalency. This is accomplished by studying the maximum, minimum, and average value of H(r) over the volume enclosed by the low-density reduced density gradient (RDG) isosurface associated with the bond (typically, the RDG isosurface including the BCP) and the average ρ(r) over the same volume. The bond assignment is also corroborated by calculating the values of quantitative indices specifically defined for the various types of interactions (A, B, or C). The generality of our taken approach should encourage its wide application to the study of Ng compounds.

Anion-Anion Interactions in Aerogen-Bonded Complexes. Influence of Solvent Environment

Ab initio calculations are applied to the question as to whether a AeX₅^- anion (Ae = Kr, Xe) can engage in a stable complex with another anion: F^-, Cl^-, or CN^-. The latter approaches the central Ae atom from above the molecular plane, along its C₅ axis. While the electrostatic repulsion between the two anions prevents their association in the gas phase, immersion of the system in a polar medium allows dimerization to proceed. The aerogen bond is a weak one, with binding energies less than 2 kcal/mol, even in highly polar aqueous solvent. The complexes are metastable in the less polar solvents THF and DMF, with dissociation opposed by a small energy barrier.
