Fluorescent chemosensors facilitate the visualization of plant health and their living environment in sustainable agriculture

Globally, 91% of plant production encounters diverse environmental stresses that adversely affect their growth, leading to severe yield losses of 50-60%. In this case, monitoring the connection between the environment and plant health can balance population demands with environmental protection and resource distribution. Fluorescent chemosensors have shown great progress in monitoring the health and environment of plants due to their high sensitivity and biocompatibility. However, to date, no comprehensive analysis and systematic summary of fluorescent chemosensors used in monitoring the correlation between plant health and their environment have been reported. Thus, herein, we summarize the current fluorescent chemosensors ranging from their design strategies to applications in monitoring plant-environment interaction processes. First, we highlight the types of fluorescent chemosensors with design strategies to resolve the bottlenecks encountered in monitoring the health and living environment of plants. In addition, the applications of fluorescent small-molecule, nano and supramolecular chemosensors in the visualization of the health and living environment of plants are discussed. Finally, the major challenges and perspectives in this field are presented. This work will provide guidance for the design of efficient fluorescent chemosensors to monitor plant health, and then promote sustainable agricultural development.

Peroxidase activity of a Cu-Fe bimetallic hydrogel and applications for colorimetric detection of ascorbic acid

A Cu-Fe bimetallic hydrogel (2-QF-CuFe-G) was constructed through a simple method. The 2-QF-CuFe-G metallohydrogel possesses excellent peroxidase-like activity to catalyze the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2. The catalytic mechanism was confirmed by the addition of •OH radical scavenger isopropyl alcohol (IPA), tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) and ˙OH trapping agent terephthalic acid (TA). Remarkably, the resultant blue ox-TMB system can be used to selectively and sensitively detect ascorbic acid (AA) with an LOD of 0.93 μM in the range of 4-36 μM through the colorimetric method. Moreover, the assay based on the 2-QF-CuFe-G metallohydrogel can be successfully applied to detect AA in fresh fruits.

A highly selective and sensitive Zn2+ fluorescent sensor based on zinc finger-like peptide and its application in cell imaging

Developing new chemosensors for detection of Zn²⁺ has attracted great attentions because of the important roles of Zn²⁺ in biological systems, and it will produce toxic effects with an excessive intake of zinc ion. Metalloproteins are often used as an effective template for the design and development of peptide-based fluorescent sensors. In this study, we designed a new and simple ratiometric fluorescent sensor for Zn²⁺, which was based on a zinc finger-like peptide and labeled with a dansyl group, i.e., Dansyl-His-Gln-Arg-Thr-His-Trp-NH₂ (D-P6), by using solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS). The dimeric peptide has a high affinity for Zn²⁺ overothermetalions, as indicated by spectroscopic studies, as well as molecular modeling. Remarkably, the sensor exhibited a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescent response to Zn²⁺ by fluorescent resonance energy transfer effect between tryptophan residue and fluorophore dansyl group, with a very low detection limit of 33 nM in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the sensor displayed a very low biotoxicity, which allows successful detection of Zn²⁺ in living HeLa cells. We believe that the new sensor may have potential applications in biological science.
