A donor-π-acceptor aggregation-induced emission compound serving as a portable fluorescent sensor for detection and differentiation of methanol and ethanol in the gas phase

A Novel D-π-A Type Fluorescent Probe for Cu2+ Based on Styryl-Pyridinium Salts Conjugating Di-(2-picolyl)amine (DPA) Units

A novel D-π-A type fluorescent probe L(NO₃) for Cu (II) sensing was designed and fully characterized. The probe consists of a styryl-pyridine cation fluorescent group and a di-(2-picolyl)amine (DPA) receptor unit, which are linked by a phenyl group to form an electron donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) conjugate system, especially the introduction of a nitrate counter anion for significantly enhanced water solubility of the probe. Fluorescence titration studies of the probe L(NO₃) showed a higher selectivity for Cu²⁺ than other metal ions, and the emission spectrum was strongly quenched upon binding. The competitive binding assay and the low detection limit (0.932 µM) showed that the probe L(NO₃) had strong anti-interference ability and excellent Cu²⁺ detection performance. The binding ratio of probe L(NO₃) and Cu²⁺ was determined from Job's plot to be 1:1, which is consistent with the results obtained from X-ray crystal structures. Meanwhile, the probe showed instantaneous chemical reversibility when titrated with EDTA solution, indicating potential recycling properties of the probe. In addition, the design of inexpensive fluorescent test strips can perform the on-site and real-time detection Cu²⁺ with a color recognition application.

Lighting up hydrogen peroxide in living cells by a novel quinoxalinamine based fluorescent probe

Hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), a member of small-molecule reactive oxygen species (ROS), plays vital roles in normal physiological activities and the occurrence of many diseases. In this work, two off-on fluorescent probes, QX8A-H₂O₂ and QX9A-H₂O₂, were firstly designed for H₂O₂ detection with novel fused quinoxalines as the fluorophores and boronate moiety as the reaction sites. By comparing the optical properties, QX9A-H₂O₂ with better performance was selected for further studies. QX9A-H₂O₂ exhibited a high sensitivity to H₂O₂ with the detection limit as low as 46 nM, and displayed a good selectivity towards H₂O₂ over other reactants such as ROS, biothiols and various ions. The detection was based on the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), proceeding through a sequential oxidative hydrolysis, 1,6-rearrangement elimination and decarboxylation process to release the fluorophore QX9A. Moreover, probe QX9A-H₂O₂ was cell permeable and was successfully employed in both exogenous and endogenous H₂O₂ imaging in living cells.

'Aggregation-Induced Emission' Active Mono-Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complex Mediated Efficient Vapor-Phase Detection of Dichloromethane

Selective vapor-phase detection of dichloromethane (DCM) is a challenge, it being a well-known hazardous volatile organic solvent in trace amounts. With this in mind, we have developed an 'Aggregation-induced Emission' (AIE) active mono-cyclometalated iridium(III)-based (M1) probe molecule, which detects DCM sensitively and selectively in vapor phase with a response time <30 s. It reveals a turn-on emission (non-emissive to intense yellow) on exposing DCM vapor directly to the solid M1. The recorded detection limit is 4.9 ppm for DCM vapor with pristine M1. The mechanism of DCM detection was explored. Moreover, the detection of DCM vapor by M1 was extended with a low-cost filter paper as the substrate. The DCM is weakly bound with the probe and can be removed with a mild treatment, so, notably, the probe can be reused.

4-Azidocinnoline-Cinnoline-4-amine Pair as a New Fluorogenic and Fluorochromic Environment-Sensitive Probe

A new type of fluorogenic and fluorochromic probe based on the reduction of weakly fluorescent 4-azido-6-(4-cyanophenyl)cinnoline to the corresponding fluorescent cinnoline-4-amine was developed. We found that the fluorescence of 6-(4-cyanophenyl)cinnoline-4-amine is strongly affected by the nature of the solvent. The fluorogenic effect for the amine was detected in polar solvents with the strongest fluorescence increase in water. The environment-sensitive fluorogenic properties of cinnoline-4-amine in water were explained as a combination of two types of fluorescence mechanisms: aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and excited state intermolecular proton transfer (ESPT). The suitability of an azide-amine pair as a fluorogenic probe was tested using a HepG2 hepatic cancer cell line with detection by fluorescent microscopy, flow cytometry, and HPLC analysis of cells lysates. The results obtained confirm the possibility of the transformation of the azide to amine in cells and the potential applicability of the discovered fluorogenic and fluorochromic probe for different analytical and biological applications in aqueous medium.
